Brando was Great, too bad it wasn't only about his character.
31 May 2003
I stayed up late to watch this movie and I regret it. Brando was awesome and totally believable as a German soldier. I felt for his character and the difficult choices presented to him. Maximilian Schell also did a great job as Brando's Captain.

The bad part about the movie was there were three plot lines: Brando's, Cliff's and Martin's. The other two guys stories were not interesting. I just kept waiting for them to get back to Brando. Because of the other characters the movie is way too long, just under three hours. I wouldn't necessarily recommend renting it unless you are willing to fast forward past the Cliff's and Martin's stories.

Watchable True Story of a Snowbound Family
9 December 2002
I caught this on the late late movie and it was all right. My first complaint is it takes to long to get to the part where they are trapped in the snow. The second problem is a technical one. There are many scenes when they are trapped in the snow and they are talking and there is no steam coming out of their mouths. I had a hard time feeling they were really freezing to death. Also, there are times the movie seems unbelievable, but since it is a true story I guess I have to believe it. Now on the positive side the acting is pretty good and it is uplifting to see what someone willing to do to save their family. Final analysis: it is worth watching if you can't sleep.

The Best Veggie Tale Video to Date
4 November 2002
I got this one recently (2002) because it was one of the few Veggie Tale videos we hadn't seen and it is nowhere as good as the current ones on the market. The stories are not as funny. I think the other comments are a little harsh. Sure they spoof Gilligans Island and the Grapes of Wrath, but I don't see that as a negative. I just think they could have done a better job doing it.

The Best Veggie Tale Video to Date
4 November 2002
I was stunned by the graphics in this one. They did an excellent job. The story is well told and moves along at a great pace. I did feel the character who leads the Peas to the Island of perpetual tickling is a little to scary looking for the youngest ones in the audience. Aside, from that this video is awesome.

A great romantic movie
4 November 2002
I had not heard about this movie until AFI's 100 Years 100 Romances list came out. It is hard to find at the video store and I feel blessed to have found it at my local library. It is an understated Romantic Comedy with some bite and meanness not normally found in classic movies. It was remade into a musical in 1949 and then again in 1998 as "You Got Mail." I actually preferred this over the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan version. It is more believable that the two romantic leads can overcome their dislike for each other and fall in love. Also, Jimmy Stewart's character is much more likable than the one Tom Hanks plays in "You Got Mail." It is a shame that more people have not heard of this great Jimmy Stewart movie.

She Spies (2002–2004)
Surprisingly Good
27 October 2002
I watched a couple of episodes and I have to admit it is funny. What makes the show good is that they don't take themselves seriously and make jokes about their own show.

In one episode an evil Icelandic spy had captured the "She Spies" and was starting to upload US Govt secret code when one girl said, "Hey, didn't we have to stop some spy from uploading code last week (or maybe episode)?"

Anyway if you are up late one night and the show comes on do yourself a favor and watch.

Awesome, fast paced movie that is great for both parents and kids
6 October 2002
This is by far the best Veggie Tale story yet. My kids loved it and so did I. The graphics are great. The songs are awesome and the jokes are very funny. The story moves very quickly without any slow down. It kept my kids engaged for the full 1 1/2 hrs. Go see this movie!

Great Musical. Fun to watch.
26 August 2002
I really liked this movie. I have seen several Gene Kelly flicks and this is one of his best. I would actually put it above his more famous American in Paris. Sometimes it seems the story gets lost in Gene Kelly movies to the wonderful dance and song numbers, but not in this movie. It is definitely worth renting.

Starts Slow but Grows on You
24 August 2002
The main character, Ester, arrives in Hollywood and can not get a job as an actress. Of course it does not help that she has no acting experience. This aspect of the film made it hard to watch at the beginning, but once she makes it the story gets better.

I liked the loving relationship she has with her husband and the I also enjoyed the location shots. It is interesting to see what Hollywood/Los Angeles looked like in the 1930's.

If you like classic films it is worth renting.

The Big Clock (1948)

The Big Clock is a Must See!
23 June 2002
Fast paced, suspenseful, a nail biter, the Big Clock is one of the best classic movies I have ever seen. I am happy it made the AFI 100 list, because that is the only reason I thought about renting it and I am so glad that I did. The Kevin Costner movie "No Way Out" is a remake of this movie and in my opinion the Big Clock is much better.

Good story marred by early Hollywood racist policies
23 June 2002
The Good Earth follows the life a slave girl and a poor farmer in China. The movie is based on the novel by Pearl S. Buck. The story is great, but I hated that they decided to cast Anglos in the lead roles. Walter Connolly is laughable as the farmer's father. He has such a heavy American accent, as do most of the lead actors, that I could not bear listening to him speak.

It is a shame that Hollywood could not get past their racist beliefs to cast Asians in the lead roles. To take Anglos and make them look like Chinese is akin to Anglos putting shoe polish on their faces to play African-Americans.
