Highway Patrol: Harbor Story (1956)
Supporting Cast from TV's Old West
A fuzzy-cheeked Stuart Whitman plays an ocean diver waylaid on a beach by 3 bank robbers posing as fishermen. But in smaller supporting roles were 2 actors who portrayed legendary Western heroes in TV series of the 1950's. Guy (Zorro) Williams played a highway patrol officer and John Hart, who briefly replaced Clayton Moore on a season of The Lone Ranger, was the highway patrol dispatcher.
Jackie Brown (1997)
Tarantino's Plump Fiction
Tarantino's quirky characters and dialog can carry a film only so far. An interesting story with characters one cares about is missing here. Samuel L. Jackson does a decent imitation of his character in Pulp Fiction but lacks a John Travolta to play off of. Pam Grier is impressive looking but doesn't have the acting chops to carry a film. Robert Forester is solid but his character is a dullard. The main setting, a generic shopping mall, is as interesting as the mall in which I originally saw the film. And someone tell Tarantino if you're going to depict a scene from 3 different viewpoints, make sure the scene is worthy watching in the first place.
Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (2001)
Dazzling Display
JIMMY NEUTRON is a dazzling, fast-paced comedy adventure that may be short on story but long on entertainment. My 8-year-old son and I give it a "thumbs-up", particularly the barrage of mildly naughty one-liners and the imaginative animation. At least for now, computer animation rules over the traditional Disney-style cartoons of the past year, Atlantis and The Emperor's New Clothes.
