Target (1985)
Dear old Dad? MY dear old Dad?!
16 July 2004
The performances of Matt Dillon and Gene Hackman brought this film right over the top for me.

Dillon's character grows from being an obnoxious teenager, who sees Dad as an un-hip set of car keys with a hand attached to them, through the astonishing realization that Dad just may be "James Bond".

And Gene Hackman brings his blazing talent to the table, unfolding from a middle-aged, pokey, conservative, 35-mile-an-hour, aw-shucks businessman into a multilingual, multitalented super-spook.

The two interact perfectly! As they face dangers and intrigue together in a wild ride across the globe to save Mom, it is a delight to see them discover and appreciate the depths of each others' characters and become friends and partners.

"Saving Mom", was almost irrelevant!

Jackie Chan's Mother LOVED this movie!
17 June 2004
Oh, what an AWFUL movie! Even the cameos couldn't save this one.

The ONLY redeeming feature was Jackie Chan, who is, as always, a delight.

His choreography of the fight scenes is the best reason to see this movie...it is brilliant.

Other than that...one is left with the question, "why?"

Did David Niven not get it right the first time around? Jules Verne must be spinning in his grave!

Apparently I am required to write at least ten lines of comment before this can be posted, so let me add that Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rob Schneider et al should be ashamed of themselves.

Best of them all!

What a brilliant move to have Cuaron direct this movie!

Harry, Ron and Hermione are no longer children...they are now most definitely 14 years old. Ron and Harry have the broadened shoulders and deep voices that I saw in my own sons (with a mixture of delight and dread!) and Hermione is as lovely a teenage girl as could be imagined.

Her "socking" of Draco brought great cries of approval and applause from the audience.

Two of my grandsons are 14 now, and are growing up along with these characters. How fortunate they are to be having this experience!

I just hope that the remaining films can be expedited so that the audience can grow along with them.

Bring on that Goblet of Fire!! Quickly, if you please!

The day I became a movie lover
31 August 2003
There are moments in certain movies that, once experienced, turn you, forevermore, into a movie-lover.

As those two glasses broke, in a bar in Acapulco, the sound nearly masked by New Years' celebrations and the strains of "Auld Lang Syne", I let out a sob that I can still feel, well more than fifty years later.

Dated, trite, corny, awful sound, loud voices, yeah, all of those. But put it aside and revel in this beautiful, gentle, glamorous and romantic love story. Even with all the available cinematographic bells and whistles, it simply could not be made today.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Delightful!
15 July 2003
Thumbs definitely up for this one!. This was MUCH more fun than I had been led to expect. Johnny Depp was marvelous! Campy and in-your-face funny.

Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush and Keira Knightly were perfect, as was Jonathan Pryce and the entire cast.

I've read that this movie is just an ad for the Disney World attraction, but since every time I've been there, the damned ride's been closed for repairs, I'll never know, will I?

This movie can stand on its own. In fact, the day the DVD comes out, it goes into my collection.

Be warned...it's a LONG movie. So if you bring a little kid? Make sure they hit the ladies/mens room first.

How about THIS year?
5 July 2003
This is one of my favorite movies of all time, and when I see it on the TV schedule, I watch it, no matter what time it's on.

1978...that was twenty-five years ago. Wouldn't you LOVE to know what Doris and George have been up to after all these years?

After all, it does fit with the original premise, doesn't it?

Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn are the only necessary actors and they're both still available.

Somebody pick up the ball and run with this!

Light Fare for Summer

M. Knight Shamalyan has scored again. I loved it...husband thought it was dumb. It was very Pollyanna-ish, but hey..sometimes you need a little "good guys win" stuff, right?

Star of the show was Joaquin Phoenix. He's getting better and better with each effort. The scenes with him and the kids were delightful!

And let's face it, Mel is Mel, right?

Wow!

J. K. Rowlings' series has gotten children all over the world to READ! Thank you, thank you, thank you, to everyone involved in the making of this film, for staying true to the book.

This was a first, for a whole generation of kids, to see a book they've read and loved, come to the screen...just think about how many times YOU'VE been disappointed in a book-to-screen translation.

After seeing the film, I re-read the book, and was amazed at how many wonderful lines and scenes had been lifted whole from the book!

The casting was perfect. The kids, of course, but Richard Harris, Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman were just as my grandkids had pictured them. Robbie Coltrane was the icing on the cake. He IS Hagrid!

Can't wait for the rest of the series. Our family, Grandparents, Parents and Kids, already have a date for November 15, 2002 for Chamber of Secrets!

Go, Harry!

Woke up the neighbors!
21 August 2002
Never saw this film until it was on late-nite TV.

My husband still has bruises from my pounding on him to wake up! I laughed until I cried!

The cast...goes without saying...magnificent. Bravura performances by all. Being brought up in an old-fashioned Italian neighborhood, I was able to identify with so many of the "grownups" in my past.

If you're really bummed, your checking account balance is in red, the IRS is after you, and your sinus headache is keeping you awake, find this film. It will cure all that and smooth out your hangnails, too!

Royal Bomb!
17 January 2002
First, let me say that I AM a moviegoer. That said...trust me. `The Royal Tenenbaums' is, by far, the worst movie ever made!

What a waste of time and talent and film and money! Gene Hackman, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, Danny Glover, Anjelica Huston and Bill Murray all combined to make a movie that makes `Ishtar' look like `Godfather II'.

Sometime during the months it took to produce this colossal disaster, wouldn't you think that someone would have tapped someone else on the shoulder and said, `This Emperor has no clothes!'

People were leaving the theater in total dismay, having stayed through the whole performance, as did we, just to be fair!

Talk about bombs! Save your money!

I Loved it!
17 January 2002
I, too, stumbled upon this movie late one night on cable, and woke my husband up laughing and punching him in the ribs!

Renee Taylor and Joe Bologna are funny, funny people (loved him in "Blame It On Rio") Lainie Kazan was perfect as his wife, and Paul Sorvino is just a GREAT actor. Didn't realize till later that this must also have been one of Angelina Jolie's first roles.

As a participant/guest/victim of many Italian wedding extravaganzas, I loved it. A New Yawk version of "Blazing Saddles".

Four out of five stars from me!
