A "Loser"? view of a very contested election.
31 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
An excellent documentary of a VERY contested, and divisive election in Mexico. Narrated from the point of view of the "losing" side, it shows how a great campaign can flounder after a "dirty war" was waged against Mr Lopez Obrador. Maybe the citizens of the U.S.A. are used to this kind of "dirty tricks", but it was the first time in Mexico's modern history that such tactics were employed to scare the people and make them believe that "the country will collapse if Lopez Obrador wins". Almost two years from the election, and after a year and a half of the rightist Calderon regime, the country HAS collapsed, and it is in a thinly disguised chaos, with more people dead in the drug wars than in Irak, the economy in shambles, the prices of everything soaring, and the rightist regime trying to sell the only industry that keeps the country going: the oil industry. Sadly, Mr Lopez Obrador was right. Watch this film and learn why.

Pretty Good, Great Locations, Charming Sonia Braga
24 October 2004
Entertaining movie, good story, great locations, and at 46, Sonia Braga is charming and looks GREAT! The story is good, with some scenes sticking in my mind: The helicopter dropping gifts and causing a great fight. The contrast between the two sisters. The scene at the beach with Miss Braga au natural. She looks HOT. Not many 46 year old women can look so good with no clothes at all. The prolonged fight over the installation of the factory. The various amorous alliances. This is, after all, a Brazilian movie. :-) All in all, a very entertaining couple of hours. And, yes, great music. Maybe it won't hold the interest of the average American movie goer, but for the rest of us.... we are charmed.

Gypsy Woman (2001)
Pleasant English Romantic Comedy
10 August 2004
The leading actors (Jack Davenport, whose next picture was "Pirates of the Caribbean") and Neve McIntosh are very good as the "Opposites Attract" couple. Although the plot is formulaic, the charm of the leads make it a very pleasant romantic comedy. She is a Gypsy with a young daughter, he is a snobbish Englishman with a young daughter. They met in a very improbable way, and you can fill in the rest. But even if the formula is adhered to, the beauty of the English (Scottish?) countryside, and the obvious chemistry between the leads lift this charming little picture above the formulas and into its own territory. Highly recommended to the fans of this genre.

NOT a waste of time
5 January 2004
A confusing tale about a confused, free spirited girl and her confusing "romance" with a guy who will do ANYTHING to win her love. (Well, almost anything; no spoilers here.) Why not a waste of time? In two words: Leticia Bredice. She is a beautiful blonde with very good acting skills. I watched the whole film just to see her, she's mesmerizing. Lots of cross-dressing, a few nude scenes, a bit of cursing, not exactly a family type film, but everything is done in relative good taste. I'd recommend it if you have an hour and a half to kill.

Karmina (1996)
Entertaining little horror romance comedy
1 October 2003
I just saw this picture and quite frankly, even if not a masterpiece, it is quite entertaining. Has great characters, some are realistic, some are cartoonish, all are entertaining.

Special kudos to Isabelle Cyr, who is really charming as Karmina. Great sets and atmosphere, great puns, all in all, a solid 7.

Emanuelle Beart shines in this BORING film...
30 July 2003
... but not even her unearthly, celestial beauty could rescue this film. And yes, the young Phoebe Cates was beautiful, but in looks alone, she's no match for Ms. Beart. But really, this is a idiotic film, with an idiotic plot, that is only watchable when Ms. Beart is on screen. Yes, she can do with just a glance what most actresses need a few pages of dialog to convey. I can't recommend this boring, badly directed and badly everything film, except for Ms. Beart. She's the only reason why you should watch this film, but fast forward any part she's not in.

Delightful Emmanuelle Béart French Comedy
21 February 2002
This was the first time I saw Emanuelle Béart, and I have been a fan of her work since then. This is the kind of comedy the french are famous for. Witty dialogue, absurd situations, surprises every few minutes... you get the point. It WILL entertain you.

Best action movie with a female lead
30 December 2001
Although there are few action movies with a female as lead, this is the BEST of the lot, and one of the top 5 best action movies ever. Beautiful, sexy Geena Davies is completely believable as a trained assassin who recovers her memory. The ending is not that great, and I'd really like a sequel or prequel, Geena deserves it...
