Amsterdam (2022)
A gem, and nothing less.
For reasons completely unknown and mysterious, it appears as if this film was not given a fair shake from the word go. Many of the "professional" critic reviews confirmed for me what I have already surmised regarding "professional" critic reviews- that they are largely worthless.
This film and its execution is everything that a great film should be. Yes there are little bits and pieces you can pick on, but bits and pieces are just that - bits and pieces. They do not amount in any substantial way to detract from what is an amazing piece of cinematic art.
Amazing cast and acting, amazing writing and dialogue, amazing direction and execution. Amsterdam has it all. If you are a fan of cliche and unimaginative dialogue peppered with completely inane and pointless action sequences, then this film is not for you. If you are a fan of real substance and scenes that move you on a more deeply emotional level, then give yourself the gift of consuming the magnificence that is this film.
Box of Rain (2022)
Marvelous!
Here is the wonderful thing about this film: While avid Grateful Dead fans will obviously love Box of Rain, it's appeal comes in many forms outside of mere admiration for the Grateful Dead.
More so than being a film about a band, it's largely about how a band or style of music can create a certain dynamic when it weaves itself within one's life at a particular time. It's a film about freedom and self-discovery...inspiration and admiration. It's a film about LIFE.
Box of Rain manages something not easily accomplished in documentary film making- which is to meld all of the most interesting and desirable aspects of good story telling into a immensely enjoyable watch.
