Les amours d'Anaïs (2021)
Extremely boring
Sorry to say I had to rate this a 1 out of 10. It was extremely boring. I love foreign films and usually, France puts out good ones specially as it relates to wlw storytelling. Particularly loved Portrait of Lady on Fire and Summertime. From the trailers I had seen for this movie I thought it was going to be a bit more of a romance. The movie starts off with the main character getting an ab*rtion, her mother having cancer, and cheating on her husband. Not very romantic. The main character first goes after a married man and then proceeds to go after his wife. It wasn't until halfway into the movie, she got with the wife. Even then, I didn't find that the chemistry was there. I had to keep fast forwarding because I couldn't sit through it.
Derry Girls (2018)
Brilliant-comedy gold!
Really didn't know much about The Troubles prior to this show and glad I was able to learn about it. Sad they don't teach about it in American schools. This show is full of 90s nostalgia and lots of laughs. All of the actors have such brilliant comedic timing and the jokes always land every episode. Friend group is very relatable and my favorite character in particular was Sister Michaels! Comedy gold! Only wish this show would go on for additional seasons, but I am very satisfied with the way it ended. Don't miss out on this show! It's a quick watch and you will most likely want to do a rewatch because it's that good!
A League of Their Own (2022)
It had potential
A League of Their Own the movie is one of my all time favorites. Unfortunately, the series is nothing like the original. You think Hollywood would have caught on by now that completely alienating your original audience isn't going to bring success. I'm giving the series a 5 because although it's not what I wanted it to be, it was still watchable. It had the ingredients for real potential, but it missed the mark. I would be shocked if it gets a second season. What made the original great was the heart of the movie, Dottie and Kit. Sibling rivalry, something the audience could relate to. In the movie, we get a glimpse into Dottie and Kits life and how they get scouted. We get the scouting mission to find Marla. We get tryouts and lots of baseball scenes. This series jumps right in at the tryouts and it's not nearly as exciting. The comedy in the original movie remains unmatched. Many of the characters in the series are quite cringey especially early on. Where's the comedy? Much of the time, the girls are speaking as if it's taking place present day which is very odd as a viewer. Much of the show is also focused on the lives of the women off the field. Honesty, I liked Max's storyline the best. It was an original story being told parallel to the AAGPBL. The reason Max's story works is because we delve into her life way more than the main characters. They would have been better off devoting the series to something new like Max's story. More time should have been given to Carson's backstory. Then there is the predictability of the show. The minute Carson finds the gay bar, I knew it would be raided at some point. One of the highlights of the series should have been the championship game; it should have been thrilling and high stakes like the movie, but instead, it was quite boring. Jo injures herself running to first base? That's the lamest injury I've ever seen.
Clueless (1995)
Wouldn't rewatch
Watching this for the first time in 2022. I skipped it all these years because I didn't think I would like it and I was right. The main character is quite unlikable. Very stereotypical ditzy girl obsessed with shopping and fashion. She ends up with her step brother?! Gross. Never showed the reaction from the father after they get together. Paul Rudd character started off not liking her because she is so vapid, but suddenly falls in love with her when he sees her all dressed up in a beautiful dress. Her beauty outweighed her personality I guess. I thought for sure it would have been written by a man, but nope. It was watchable which is why I give it a 5, but won't be rewatching in the future.
