Pain & Gain (2013)
Everybody should understand what this movie is about
I remember when this was released and everybody gave negative reviews about the film and storyline.
Perhaps the reason being that everybody thought that this is a movie about bodybuilders and their way of life - but no, that is not what this is about. This movie is about idiots, morons that literally fail at everything they do, but somehow they have just enough luck that they almost get away with it.
Pain and Gain is like a satire when stupid people cook up a brilliant plan, but then it all goes downhill at every single point. You have to have a sense of irony when watching this movie and you have to remember that "no, it's not about fitness", but it's about people who are full of themselves and they are willing to do whatever it takes to make it big in this life.
But of course, there is always a huge risk when making a movie that it based on real life events - especially on those that are focused on criminals.
Michael Bay does a fantastic job with Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson. But you have to be a bit twisted to like this movie and it doesn't hurt if you're a gym addict yourself. Very character driven, which is surprising a movie of this Hollywood magnitude.
Great movie and fun to watch!
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
You have to watch it again and again
This is one of those movies that when I first time saw it, I wasn't sure what to think of it. I thought that this movie would be about clever business men like Michael Douglas in Wall Street, or The Margin Call, but it seemed to have a lot of provocation for sex and drugs and not that much of business involved. I didn't imagine that it would be a sort of dark comedy about drugs and money greedy a-holes, who are willing to do whatever it takes to have more of everything.
I have never read the book and I don't think that any movie that is based on a book should require the viewer to read the book first. After I watched the movie second time, I begun to understand the complexity of the film and the genius of the characters.
Leonardo does a fantastic role in the movie as does Jonah Hill. This is one of those movies that when you watch it for the second and third time - it only gets better.
MC Helper beKINGs (2022)
Comedy is a talent, but this movie has none of it
This movie made by Finnish Youtubers was just awful. I hate to say this, since I don't like to give negative reviews, but I honestly have nothing good to say about movies like this one.
For years everybody has been complaining how awful Timo Koivusalo's Pekko movies were in the 90's and here we are in the year 2022 and we are seeing exactly the same kind of idiotic hillbilly humor that ignites no one.
And don't get me wrong, I do like low-class humor and B-class jokes and movies like Anchorman, but when something isn't funny then it just isn't funny. It's not the quality of the joke, but it's just the definition which is funny and which is not.
Toinen mies (2022)
Great performances from several actors
I actually enjoyed this film. The tone of the movie resembles old westerns where the thriller aspects move slowly towards the end resolution. Not to give away any spoilers, but Saija Lentonen does incredible role performance as Jaana and Jarkko Nyman surprises with his lead character Tommi. Everybody knows Nyman from his soap opera background, so I didn't expect too much, but he turned out to be a brilliant actor. I believe this is also Nyman's first lead role in a feature film...
Juha Veijonen makes a comeback on the big screen, which is fun to see. Anu Sinisalo is always great in every role that she takes on and naturally Heikki Kinnunen does a solid performance.
All in all, I think the film had an interesting drama storyline and very different from majority of Finnish movies. All the characters had a background story, so the viewer really has to pay attention to what is happening.
It's very different from what people are expecting to see and I think this is one of those movies that you either love it or hate it.
As the film is about triangle-affairs, then you would expect to see a lot of nudity, sex on camera, cheesy jokes and all that other material which is almost 90% of Finnish movies, but if this is what you are after then don't waste your time because this is not the movie for you. BUT if you're into stories that dig deeper into human behavior and move further with drama and slowly building suspension then go and see it.
As a movie I think it falls to the same category as David Fincher's Gone Girl with Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike and I gave that movie 10 stars. Both are very character focused and surprising.
