Barbie (2023)
Someone's a fan of Warren Beatty
Basically a Mattel remake of Heaven Can Wait: A person travels to a separate 'reality' to better understand who they are and what they have to offer in this world, and how the two worlds are connected. Add to it the fun movie opening rip off of 2001 Space Odyssey, it's hard to say that this is a very original movie. However, Margot Robbie brings it home and grounds the emotional side of the movie beautifully. The colour palette and the messages are worthwhile, ballsy directing and old for this role but excellent Gosling make it worth seeing. Will we remember this movie few years from now? No. But doesn't mean it's not worth seeing.
Rough Diamonds (2023)
When soap opera writers try to make a crime series
Marie Vinck, Robbie Cleiren and Ini Massez are definitely the highlight of this series, along with the Antwerp diamond district.
The concept: top notch. The setting: Antwerp is an excellent setting for a crime series. The execution: what could have been an intriguing crime drama is a soap opera created by people who clearly don't understand the criminal sector well, nor have they done much research about real criminals.
The writing gets worse as the series progresses, and the lead is super one note. Not entirely his fault as his character is never fully flushed out. One season of this is plenty.
Avec amour et acharnement (2022)
Lost in itself
While the characters are interesting and the premise is solid, the overexposition in the script all throughout makes you want to jump off the balcony as it renders something with a lot of potential into a student-level film, with brilliant actors left to deliver debutant dialogue. It's lazy, preachy, pretentious and simply put lacks tension all throughout, which for any movie but especially a drama is deadly.
At the end of the day, the only character worth caring here is Jean, thanks to Vincent Lindon's delivery, but even then it's not even clear what he really wants. Francois wants Sara, Sara wants who knows what, Jean seems to want to be a good parent yet doesn't do much for it. Weak objectives which lead to a futile, slow and boring progression.
I wish I could get the time wasted watching this back.
