Joker (I) (2019)
8/10
Very good and exhilarating
8 March 2024
I think this was a well-executed and fine movie. I saw it in the cinema in 2019 and I was very entertained.

It perfectly breaks down Arthur as a character, his insanity and his depression.

Joaquin gives an Oscar-worthy performance, both brilliant and moving. His scenes with De Niro as Murray Franklin are fantastic. The genius of the film is its storytelling. The tone is suited to a film about the Joker.

Whilst it is brilliantly written, it's not flawless as some parts dragged like those taking place in Arthur's apartment and is sometimes hard to watch. Overall, it serves as a good origin story.

Modern Family: Baby on Board (2012)
Season 3, Episode 24
8/10
A charming and well paced episode
14 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Modern Family is a charming witty show that is full of loveable, three dimensional characters. I feel that in season 3, the writers have done well to create relatable storylines for the cast.

This episode is no exception.

The main plot sees Cam and Mitchell head off to a hospital in California to meet and bring home their new son. The baby's family happens to be Spanish-speaking, therefore Gloria is asked to come and help translate. When they arrive however, in typical 'MF' fashion, things start to get rapidly out of hand. There's a surprising and emotional speech from Mitchell in the last 5 minutes, which I thought was very expertly written - it perfectly highlights the struggles gay couples can face in trying to adopt.

Lily is left with Jay and Manny meanwhile. The two drive her to a dance recital, when Lily gets cold feet. This plot was OK but not that interesting.

At the Dunphys, Haley is trying to prove to her parents that she can live with Dylan. Phil and Claire are not pleased and sceptical. But things turn out well, as Haley finds out she got in to community college.

Luke is great despite not having too much to say though he is involved. Alex is going to prom meaning she's absent for most of the episode.

All in all, I found it a rather deep and good episode.

A highly phenomenal film
6 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
What to expect from an Animated Spider-man movie? In summary, it needs comedy, it needs action and a good plotline

This movie is extremely likeable, and certainly comedic. It has a bit of everything. It delivers entertainment in every sense.

Miles is super likeable & I really relate to him. His insecurities, his bravery and mastering his powers.

The major positive of this film for me is relationship between Peter B Parker and Miles. It is amazing and so well-written, from Peter reluctantly becoming his mentor to Miles, then joining the other Spiders, later the significance of him telling Miles that he is not coming. I like this because you know Peter doing this out of care. He is trying to protect Miles "You're not ready" despite Miles not WANTING protection.

Phenomenal action, worth seeing.

Bob's Burgers (2011– )
8/10
A hearwarming and good comedy
7 May 2023
I started watching this show about 3 years ago, and I can honestly say it surprised me. It is fantastic, genuinely funny and with a similar charm to Rick and Morty.

Drawbacks to the show are some episodes (mainly from season 1& 2 while it's finding its rhythm) are lacking in humour. Teddy, a recurring character, is also kind of unfunny, when compared to characters like Linda or Louise.

The relationship between Bob and Linda is so healthy and great to see. It is clear there is genuine trust and love between them.

I also love John Robert's voice acting, he's the best actor.

Personally, the finales of season 4 (World War II: the Wharfening) and season 5, and season 5 ep7 are my favourites. Certainly a feel-good show.

Peaky Blinders: Episode #1.6 (2013)
Season 1, Episode 6
9/10
Brilliant episode
29 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this episode only last month, on Iplayer.

I was very entertained. Everything reaches a satisfying end. The excitement and building to the climax is excellent.

I really love Cillian Murphy in this episode. His acting is amazing - he conveys so much with his tone and facial expressions. The funeral scene is good too.

Special mention to Helen Mccroy, she really was tremendous in this episode, especially during her conversation with Grace and telling her that she knows about her betrayal and conspiring with Major Campbell (even if she has changed her allegiance). It is so intense and really well scripted.

Occasionally a little too violent such as the scene when Lee Kimber gets shot when the gangs come face to face. But it was a really good end to the season.

Up (2009)
10/10
Up is fabulously good in every way
23 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If someone were to ask me what qualities would make up a great film, I would sum it up with these 4 things: 1) Pretty good atmosphere 2) Well-written non-obnoxious humour 3) A marvellous plot 4) Excellent and likeable main characters who grow effectively during the course of the film Having watched this film three times, I can sincerely say that Up includes all four of these things. The Incredibles (2004) also contains all four.

The montage of Carl and Ellie growing old together is without dialogue and will probably bore some kids. However looking back on it I consider it the most moving opening to a pixar film ever. Being without dialogue makes it more moving and it's symbolic of Pixar's awesome animation.

I shed a couple of tears at the scene when Carl sits alone at the funeral. Life is full of happiness and downsides - the animators beautifully depicted that here.

The backstory to why Carl wants to go to Paradise Falls is well-told. Ed Asner's acting when Carl and Russell arrive is just so satisfying. Also, I like that Russell is a character in his own right. He's somebody who's likeable and holds his own wishes.

The plot is engaging and moving. The climax to the film ties everything together nicely.

The music is fabulous as well. While the 7 minutes of story before Paradise Falls drag a bit, it doesn't stop the film getting a 10.

Gravity Falls: Not What He Seems (2015)
Season 2, Episode 11
10/10
What an excellent and entertaining episode
7 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was fantastic.

While many people consider NWHS to be the best Gravity Falls episode, it is only my 2nd favourite after Dreamscaperers, simply because the mood of the latter is better.

That being said, I have no fault with the overall plot and story of this episode. The drama increases scene by scene, the animation is breathtaking and the dialogue is excellent. Grunkle Stan, Dipper and Mabel's interactions, from the opening when they set off fireworks, to the time when they nearly shut the portal down, is really good. Most of the loose ends introduced before come together.

I also liked how it brings out Dipper's naturally suspicious personality. He is the one thinking with his head - given what they've seen he is more likely to not trust Stan. Mabel thinks with her heart. His exclamation after the portal opens is very chilling.

The animation when they find fake IDs is breattaking. The final reveal is done perfectly, from the appearance of the author to the shocked glances of our characters

Agent Powers has some great moments. My favourite line is from Dipper: "The other two journals? All this time... all this time, Stan had them?! I can't believe it! Was anything he said to us real?" What a masterful story.

Modern Family: Connection Lost (2015)
Season 6, Episode 16

Top marks - A fun and innovative episode
17 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Often comedies can reach their peak after a few years, when the premises become a little less hiliarious and slick. For example, how I met your Mother has more funny episodes in its first 4 seasons than in its 7th or 8th, in my view.

However, this episode is superb.

The premise for this episode is interesting, but on the first watch I wasn't sure if it would be good. I was proven wrong. I loved how they managed to make a whole plot with Facetime.

Julie is fantastic through this episode, as a worried Claire is stuck at the airport whilst trying to figure out where Haley has been. The writers find a way to work in one-liners - Mitchell's hat, Phil being absent-minded, Cameron's disapproving words when Claire gulps the corn.

The reveal about Haley being 'married'.

Plus the line 'Oh, my God, gross! I've been playing Candy Crush with my mother." Made me laugh.

We're given pieces of the story at the same time as Claire, which is super good; keeps the viewers entertained.

Overall, an episode that has lots of laugh & is fabulous.

Super Mario 3D Land (2011 Video Game)
8/10
The game is superb and enjoyable
11 August 2022
To start, I think that this is one of the best mario platformers of all time. I got it around the time that I first got a 3DS. Princess Peach once again is kidnapped, leading to Mario on a quest to save her. Same as the super Mario bros games.

This does not stop it being entertaining.

The game introduces good and easy to learn mechanics The tanooki leaf returns from Super Mario bros 3. I like this item and its modified version, the stone leaf, very much. My favourite worlds are World 8 and special 1, particularly level special 1-4.

The final boss is superbly made. I like that the game requires you to collect star medals to progress. When I had defeated the fnal boss the first time, I had 79 lives.

It keeps you entertained. This game is good to try out.

Stranger Things: Chapter Four: Dear Billy (2022)
Season 4, Episode 4
9/10
Wonderful
3 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Strangers Things is a unique and entertaining show. It is full of mystery and horror.

At this point, we now know Vecna, how he works and kills and what the characters are facing. This episode focuses on Max and her struggle, refusing to confide in her friends, asking to go places house, switching between the Upside Down and real life.

The scene where she reads the letter is awesome. Sadie sinks uses all her emotion here, once again shows her acting talents. Then the showdown in the Upside down, her in a trance.

Her friend worried for her. I was scared. Definitely the best episode of this season.

I also liked the scene when Mike read Eleven's letter.

The Time Traveler's pig
12 June 2022
Gravity falls as a show is in my opinion humorous, fabulous and quite dark for a Disney cartoon.

This episode is not most excellent but I enjoyed it. Dipper constant failures to win Wendy's affection was pretty slapstick, great and humorous, as was the B-plot with Grunkle Stan and the dunk tank. He was good. The introduction of Blendin into the show is good. In addition, he has some good lines. I found the overall plotline to be entertaining.

Scrubs (2001–2010)

Scrubs - A solid comedy
11 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I have not watched all 8 seasons, I admit, but what I've seen Scrubs is a promising and fantastic show.

The characters are individuals that are flawed but likeable. Dr Kelso (Ken Jenkins) has many good lines. It is a comedic take on hospital working life.

Season 1 is a bit slow to begin with, but then improves. One thing that makes this show stand out is the relationships formed between everyone on staff. J. D. And Elliot hook up and break up, Turk and Carla start dating, Carla and Elliot initially hate each other but then become true friends. Dr Cox is constantly teasing J. D. but deep down there is mutual respect.

Overall it's good.

Great entertainment
10 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I have watched this film twice, the last time four years ago. I have to say, I enjoyed it very much.

To summarise, Wreck-it Ralph (John C Reilly) is the antagonist of a popular arcade game known as Fix-it Felix, and every day goes the same. Get up, wreck the town of niceland, thwarted by Felix Jr then thrown of the building. Until one day, Ralph decides he wants to change. He says so at villian con, to his fellow villians' surprise. He goes turbo, enters Hero's Duty to redeem himself, but knowing that this is risky. Then chaos ensues.

It is full of amusement, excitement and lots of gaming references and cameos, such as Q'bert and the Hero's Duty game, which I found inspired and it added enjoyment. The plot is a little messy. The setup to the climax with Candy/Turbo was great. Personally, I liked Ralph and sergeant Callhoun's (voiced by Jane Lynch) characters the best.

Disney did great with this.

Really like this
10 June 2022
This episode was well paced and fabulous. A reminder of the good 10th doctor era episodes.

The monsters were great, David Tennant was great in this, and of course bringing back Sarah Jane was welcome.

She is fabulous - that scene where she realises who 'John Smith' actually is after finding the TARDIS, and the 'Hello Sarah Jane' line is iconic. Also, Sarah Jane doesn't take away the light from Rose. They learn to like one other by te end Toby Whithouse wrote this pretty good.

The gang are all interesting and the plot is interesting.

The Office: Stress Relief (2009)
Season 5, Episode 13
10/10
Comedy Gold
29 May 2022
This is a phenomenal episode. The title alone makes one expect a chaotic, fun episode.

The jokes hit so well, such as Dwight defacing the CPR dummy, Michael walking to the other side of the room in the scene with corporate. Everything about the fire drill scene and the co-workers - except Dwight the originator of it - panicking. Kevin trying to break the vending machine was epic.

The office at its best. If this isn't true comedy, I'm uncertain what is.

An action-packed finale that gets high marks
28 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Compared to the underwhelming sixth installement Harry Potter and the half-blood Prince, and the previous film which had a good beginning and middle but slightly underdone finale, this film was marvellous.

The special effects were excellent, Ralph Fiennes is great as Lord Voldemort - his performance is both frightening and full of gravitas, and the plot holds together quite well. I liked the inclusion of the carriage ride at Gringotts. It was directed well, as was the final battle between Voldemort and Harry Potter.

Daniel gives an exemplary performance as Harry Potter. I particularly loved the line to Snape "Tell them what YOU did that night, how you looked them in the eye, a man who trusted you." The pensieve memories of Snape, where his allegiance is revealed before Harry goes to the Forest was done well, but I would have liked to have seen more conversations between Lily and Snape. Also, Fred's grim death should have had more depth, which was a shame

Definitely worth watching.
