Beacon 23: God in the Machine (2023)
Classic Sci Fi
A classic science fiction episode, like something out of an old magazine like Amazing Stories. A self contained tale that you don't see today when everything in the genre has to be part of an overall story arc. This shows what this series could be, an anthology series tied together by the setting of a lonely beacon in space with a resident AI that may be more insane than its lonely occupants.
The technical inaccuracies in this series are certainly annoying, and I struggled to understand just where the series was going, but the change in perspective this episode brought me gives me hope I may like where this series is going after all.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Elysian Kingdom (2022)
Not that bad
Okay, I agree this episode would have been better in season 2 or 3 after we got to know the characters better. It's also an old, sci-go trope.
But...
It's a classic sci-fi trope, old though it may be, and really wasn't done badly. It's also important to remember that Strange New Worlds is much more like TOS or even Lower Decks than it is Discovery or Picard. It's obvious the cast enjoyed their roles.
This was the first episode where I liked the Hemmer character, which is saying something.
***Minor spoiler ahead***
The "Crimson Guard" may be the best gag ever on a Star Trek show/ movie.
