The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
Not as good as the original.
I have to admit that I wasn't the biggest fan of the original. The first time I watched it was long after it had been released and I had heard so much about it that I think my expectations were too high. Upon repeat viewings, I grew to appreciate it more and more. It's still not in my top ten but an enjoyable movie none the less. After seeing Reloaded, my appreciation for the original increased ten fold.
I'm sure I will be burned at the stake for saying it, but I really didn't care to much for Reloaded. Not from a visual stand point, it looks amazing, and not because of the acting. I just found myself losing interest in the story. The opening was slow. With the exception of the freeway scene, which I loved, the action scenes seemed to drag on a bit long. and I felt that they were to few and far between. The story itself just couldn't hold my interest.
I guess, to make a long story short, I think that the first one was a great stand alone movie that didn't need a sequel. I almost felt as I watched this one that it was only made to make money. If I didn't need the closure because of the cliff hanger ending, I probably wouldn't see the third one. I'm not saying that it was a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination, the direction the story is taking just doesn't appeal to me.
Running Time (1997)
This is what independent film making is all about...
I recently bought a copy of Running Time on DVD simply because I am a huge Bruce Campbell fan and thought I had seen most of his movies. I was a bit hesitant at first when I heard that the filmaker's attempted to make this movie in one continuous shot. I thought that that would make for a boring hour and a half (it's actually just over 70 minutes). Much to my suprise, I loved it. I was hooked 5 minutes in. The acting was very crisp and the story was very original in that it is more of a love story than a crime drama. The fact that it was shot on 16mm in B&W also makes it that much better. The tone is set from the get go and the pace is perfect. The few cuts that the movie does have are hard to catch even if you are looking for them.
I was also very entertained by the audio commentary on the disc. It was like listening to a couple of guys BS about making a movie. It's not at all like those other commentaries where the director sits and talks about how such and such looks like a silent movie actor over and over again or how having this star was at the top of their draft.
In closing, check it out. It's a fun flick that is worth watching more than once. Oh, and if anyone out there is listening...
Bruce Campbell would make a perfect Superman!!!!!!!!(Nicolas Cage? Honestly????)
Jason X (2001)
Not As Bad As One Might Think!
I'll be honest, when I first heard the concept behind Jason X, I was as scared as a 20 year old, naked woman at Camp Crystal Lake. Jason on a spaceship in the future? That's just crazy talk. But you know what, it's not half bad. Granted, they have completely left what made parts 1-4 good behind but as the tenth in the series they could have done much worse.(Remember the heart eating scene in Jason Goes To Hell?) Sure this one is full of bad one liners and is as unoriginal as as the previous four, but as far as entertainment value goes, it's definatly worth a look. At least if your a fan of the series.(If this will be your first Friday film, don't bother!) I don't want to ruin anything but if you've made it through the first nine and still call yourself a fan, check it out. Just don't be to hard on it. What else can you do with a mentally handicapped. homicidal madman in a hockey mask? At least they tried. Come on New Line, get on the ball with Freddy VS. Jason!!!!!!!
