Monster Island (2004 TV Movie)

What's Not To Like?
21 March 2004
A really fun retro science fiction-adventure-monster movie with a pleasing cast, good sense of humor, fantastic traditional stop-motion animation, a remote island, a lost tribe, giant bugs, a rubber suited monster, a papier-mache volcano and Adam West as wacky scientist Dr. Harryhausen. The story moves along quickly and is told with considerable wit. There's also a nice use of obvious miniatures of the jungle, a boat and the island itself which really help convey the feeling of a 50's adventure film. Adam West gives a bravura performance in a highly amusing role. When I first heard about this film I had my doubts but we were really pleasantly surprised by the results. A classic Saturday matinee come to life. Well done to all involved!

Moving, Powerful, Unheralded Western Masterpiece
24 August 2003
I got tired of reading reviews containing either outright misinformation (suggesting the writer saw some other movie) or downright absurdity. From the top notch performances to the stirring Alfred Newman score to the brilliant Vincent McEveety direction to the detailed Calvin Clements script, this a western I can recommend wholeheartedly. This movie finally deserves its due, and a decent DVD release. Rather than falling into the spaghetti western mold popular at the time, this film looks and feels very American, a direct heir to the great Anthony Mann westerns of the 50s.

Jimmy Stewart, mystifyingly maligned in other reviews, gives a sincere moving performance. I wonder if the criticism comes at his farmer character's reluctance towards violence--disappointing no doubt to fans of "cartoon" westerns. The gritty realism extends to the easy, natural relationship among the gang played by Henry Fonda, Gary Lockwood, James Best, Jack Elam, and Morgan Woodward. This gang is the catalyst and their details, ticks and volatile unpredictability are portrayed with beautifully understated precision. And J. Robert Porter as the town simpleton will break your heart.

There's so much fine work by the cast, particularly Stewart, Fonda, Lockwood (who played another superb villain in the electrifying two-part "Gunsmoke" episode, "The Raid"), Best, Elam, Brooke Bundy, Jacqueline Scott, Louise Latham, Barbara Luna and Ed Begley. A dark, gritty, suspenseful western to be sure, but with a warm heart and soul at its center. Seek it out.

A Pleasant Surprise
11 August 2003
It ain't the budget, it's how you use it. Ignore the obvious limitations (mediocre dubbing, lack of effects, etc.) of this little horror film and enjoy the decent direction that manages to generate more suspense than most A thrillers. There's even a scene that reminded me of Val Lewton (that's right--Val Lewton!). This is just plain fun, with scares, a decent atmosphere and an often effective music score. And it's available on a budget DVD so how can you go wrong?

Filmed In the Wonder of Confuse-o-vision!
15 July 2003
Starts off promising and quite fascinating, slides a bit when characters do those illogical things they do in inferior horror movies, then goes completely silly in the third act when the movie finds itself stuck in a castle with an absurd climax. Apparently there were two DPs: one quite competent, even inspired. Then when the action scenes happen, a completely different cinematographer seems to take over. Scenes that should/could be terrifying are sunk by being shot in Confuse-o-vision, a process closely related to Incomprehensoscope. As a result, we hear loud bad noises, see flashes of movement of some sort, and basically HAVE NO IDEA AT ALL WHAT IS HAPPENING. The infected ones seem to have been given some very intriguing--and consistent--choreography. So why compound and confuse all their hard work with an equally spastic camera? Makes no sense. SHALLOW GRAVE had such strong simple storytelling--such clear communication to its audience. I am much more affected/involved when a film lets me in on what's happening (call me crazy). Too bad this silly-cam stuff is so trendy. Hopefully, it will pass. What a letdown.

College Comedy WITH heart
23 June 2003
That's right, it's not only funny as hell, it's got a real sweet side too. I was fortunate enough to catch a screening of this little gem in LA and was psyched to hear the public will be seeing this soon. There are scenes in this that are among the funniest I have seen in quite some time. I was pleasantly surprised, cause I don't expect much from teen comedies, especially since the majority are poorly written, ineptly produced and--most unforgivable--just not FUNNY. It's worth seeing for the elevator scene alone--an image that will forever be emblazoned on mind. Smartly directed, a winning cast portraying well-drawn characters. Who knew this could happen?

A Relentless White Knuckle Ride
22 February 2003
This is a beautifully mounted action thriller that creates suspense with a deliberate setup and then wonderfully delivers on those expectations. When it gets going it's truly relentless. This is far better than any American action film of recent years and there's a lesson to be learned here. Especially with creating interesting multi-layered characters we care about coupled with the unpredictability that anyone can get killed at any time. When the audience cares about the characters the main battle of any action flick is won--we have a vested interest. At that point there's no other place to be but on the edge of your seat. If this is not picked up for US distribution it'll be a crime, and our loss.
