Prospect (2018)
And that's how it's done
"Prospect" is a cinematic gem that brilliantly captures the essence of a meticulously constructed world, gripping storylines, and realistic character development. It is a refreshing departure from the clichéd Hollywood blockbusters, offering a more grounded and believable narrative.
The female lead in the movie is portrayed as a strong, independent character without resorting to caricature or implausible exaggerations. Her strength lies in her resilience and the way she navigates through the challenges thrown her way. The relationship between her and the male protagonist is one of the highlights of the film. Their dynamic is complex, intriguing, and evolves organically throughout the story.
The script is a masterful blend of unexpected twists and grounded storytelling, ensuring that the audience remains engaged and invested in the narrative. The world-building in the movie is exceptional, with subtle details sprinkled throughout the story without feeling forced or overly explanatory.
The characters act in a reasonable and consistent manner, with a sense of honor and camaraderie and cooperation. Something dearly missing from movies like "Predator: Prey". The settlers, for example, demonstrate a genuine sense of unity and moral compass, like paying up.
A minor gripe with the movie is its limited exploration of the technological and scientific aspects. An additional 10 minutes to showcase the de-orbiting maneuver or delve deeper into the weaponry and suits would have been a welcome addition. However, this does not detract from the film's overall impact.
In conclusion, "Prospect" is a tightly woven, captivating film that offers a realistic and immersive experience. It is a testament to the power of storytelling when it is focused on character development, a well-structured narrative, and an imaginative world that leaves the audience craving more.
Master of None: Moments in Love, Chapter 1 (2021)
Wonderful
I thouroughly enjoyed this first episode. It's intimate, well acted and well done. It's playful with many little details in imagery and intricate sound effects.
Thank you thank you thank you, for creating something that not everybody enjoys. Please take solace in almost 50% of viewers that enjoy even more so. That's what non-linear TV is made for.
To all the people giving this 1 Star: Go watch something else, no offense.
Locke & Key (2020)
First episodes great, after that mehh
The first 3 or 4 episodes are really good. Slow, suspensful, creepy horror. Everything makes sense, the acting and the script are refreshingly solid.
But then it all goes south into a cheap teenie show. It's like they changed the writers. It's not only the overall direction that changes, but also the quality. Many weird mistakes in consistency, the actors become annoying and unrelatable. Suddenly there's nobody to root for.
Unfortunately Netflix shows are doing this all the time. They start out with a strong concept and high quality and then suddenly loose steam after the first episodes. It's very annoying.
This show would have been really great if they kept the style of the first episodes. But like this, it's just another disappointment.
Final Space (2018)
2nd season destroyed it all
The first season was a huge surprise for me. It drew me in from the first seconds. It had a lot of heart, quirkiness, style and fun. It was just awesome from start to the glorious finish.
The second season: Shame on you! Shame on Conaco and Conan for being involved in this.
No real coherent plot, the little that is there is razor thin and makes barely sens, incredibly dumb side stories, overall no soul. Has the whole team been exchanged?
Second Opinion (2018)
Enjoyable thriller
Fine acting and a good story. To my surprise, i really enjoyed this one.
The Meg (2018)
A wild ride
Long did I hesitate to watch "The Meg", the reviews where not very enticing. But I must disagree with the low score.
It's the movie I've been waiting for since Deep Blue Sea, but 2 notches up on silliness. The story is wild and incoherent, but it's a romp. Most characters are a bit out there, but hey, aren't we all in real live?
The Meg itself? I really liked this beast. It looked very real to me and has a cool "design". Not "over-CGIed", very organic, reminded me of the first Jurassic Park. There are many memorable moments (some even made it into my dreams next night :-))
All in all, I had Fun and it felt like the movie became what it wanted to be. Something that I cannot say about many movies these days. Rainn Wilson as corporate weasel alone is worth the price of the admission. True Popcorn-Cinema!
I give it 8 stars, generously rounded up from 7.2, for going with this kind of style and creating a movie that is silly, but at the same well enough made to make me care about his protagonists and even the meg!
Hell, yeah!!
Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
Perfect Action Comedy!!
Witty, fast paced, all actors are top-notch and fit perfectly into the ragtag, zany team. Michael Douglas is just a pleasure to watch. His constant father/son-like bickering on Rudd is hilarious.
The script is interesting and what's double great: it's not about saving the world and still has a very meaningful purpose. Loads of human interaction and condition going on, i don't even understand how some people say it's shallow. In my opinion it's one of the least shallow movies of mcu.
It was a blast in the cine, constant snickering or laugh out loud moments of the . I had some parts where i had troubles catching breath. Which is good :-)
So, I'm very happy with 2018 cinema: with Infinity War and Ant Man we got two Superhero flicks that did not suck!!
Lost in Space (2018)
Boring, what a shame
The first episode looked promising. I liked the landscapes, the colors. The story was kind of intense. But after that it went downward. Sometimes the whole episode is mindless action, until your ears bleed. But somehow it's badly done, at some point the urgency gets lost and it's nothing but boring. Full of stupid decisions, plot holes, impossible saves and annoying people. The fake doctor is worst, just push her over the cliff already...
I finished episode 5 now, and that's how far it will go. I really did like a lot of the individual actors though. Mostly the two girls and especially Mina Sundwall. She has a very cool way of acting, hope to see her in some great action movie in the future.
TV Series is very it's at currently, there has been a lot of amazing stuff coming out in the last years. But Lost in Space does not belong to it. It's a shame. I wanted to like it.
The Tick (2016)
The hero in us
The Tick is one of the few shows that are 100% made with care and can be thoroughly enjoyed. All the characters are fantastic, their development is interesting, and they play off each other in often hilarious ways.
Special mention goes to The Terror. It's striking, that a light-hearted show manages to portray such a menacing villain, and still be fun! Something most "big" superhero movies don't manage to do. I craved for every scene with The Terror.
I love that they don't rely too much on mindless action, but much more on telling the story. The somewhat corny special effects may be mostly cost effective, but they also fit perfectly.
I saw the whole season 1 and loved it.
Todd Barry: Spicy Honey (2017)
Very funny
Never saw Todd Barry before. Netflix keeps on delivering specials, props to them. And props to Todd Barry. Way to show how different tastes can be (@asharf), for me it was a joke festival and i laughed my ass off. Maybe also because many jokes hit home and many remind me of friends - it just works.
This guy looks so unsuspicious, hand in his pockets, moving with minimum possible effort on the stage - deadpan indeed.
xD
Star Trek: Discovery: Despite Yourself (2018)
Dark but (finally) good
After a rather abysmal first round of episodes this is the first one i actually liked.
It's grittier than ever, but the story holds up and is engaging. Interesting take on another universe - this is just as much a possibility as the utopian original Star Trek universe.
Keep it up!!
The X Files: Mulder & Scully Meet the Were-Monster (2016)
Something different bad not good
Just finished Episode 3 of Season 10 and i will not give any more time to the series, it has knocked itself out.
Mulder gives a depressingly tired performance, Scully seems to be OK but has become very cold and odd ("I did not remember how much fun this is." - While looking into the brutal murder of several people). The main storyline of the Season in the first two episode breaks with the previously established story, there is no way this angle fits into the previous series and movies.
Episode 3, while kind of amusing, pulled the whole series into silliness, they pulled the rug under themselves. How am i supposed to take anything serious anymore if they don't take themselves or the viewer serious.
It's not fresh, it's lazy and lost.
The Young Pope: Episode #1.10 (2016)
It takes a TV Show to explain me religion
I'm an Atheist, since I can think. Nobody could ever explain to me, why people believe in something - no matter what religion. Even my aunt, who is christian theology teacher, couldn't offer any kind of explanation.
I tumbled onto this series in a "Top of 2017" list and luckily gave it a shot. Probably because of Jude Law. It captivated me right from the beginning. Expecting basically a comedy with a young and cool pope - this is so much more - and not at all what I expected. It is not afraid to twist and turn, to make you cringe. But that's exactly what forces you to think about the issues that are being pondered.
It makes a great job of portraying a devoted live, without offending believers or non-believers. That's the power of stunning acting and a thoughtful script. I think this is some of Jude Laws best work, but everybody is top of their game.
Honestly, man, the last episode had me in tears and overwhelmed.
I do hope they will not produce more than one other season or at best, stop here. I think, TV Shows are the future, they give a lot more space to develop, but they need to learn to find an ending and come up with new ideas.
Thanks for producing this fearless and touching show!
Peace and Happy New Year!! ;-)
Au service de la France (2015)
L'Algérie c'est la France
It's a shame that this excellent production has no review yet on IMDb, so i decided to go first :-)
"A very secret service" caught me by surprise. The stage are the early 1960s, relatively short after the end of WW2 and in the middle of the cold war. It's a mix of "The Office" and "Dr. Strangelove".
There is plenty of twisted, sarcastic and dark humour (at times very British). They shoot quotable one-liners like machine guns at you. I laughed my *** off many times (hint: the eastern German bathrobe).
With all the silliness they managed to create a coherent story line as well as a bunch of characters you really care about.
They mostly also use very nicely and somewhat easy to understand french, so it's good for those wanting to learn french. I'm Swiss, so i can relate well to what's going on.
Now bring on the second season, or i will get very grumpy!!
Zookeeper (2011)
Funny and lovable movie
Having it let pass by me so far, also due to the low score on IMDb, i finally saw the movie couple days ago on TV, expecting quite a turkey.
And man, it was time well spent! In contraction to other comedies, not only the main character(s) are silly, everybody is. Everybody behaves over the top, even the apparently more serious stereotypes. And almost nobody gets away bad.
The story is funny and heartwarming at the same time. It has a lot of physical comedy but also funny dialogs and situations. Got to admit, i shed tears of laughter many times and days later i'm still snickering thinking of some of the scenes. This is 4.9 on IMDb? Sometimes i really have to wonder if we saw the same movie. I'm in my 30s, dunno, maybe i'm not supposed to find this funny...
The message of this movie: Have fun, don't be afraid to do silly things, let your inner child out and... always follow your heart.
BTW, Rosario Dawson is gorgeous! And she is very funny too. Got a little crush on her with this movie LOL
Skyline (2010)
Solid, tense, surprising
oh, come on, give me a break - 4.5?? For me this was one of the more interesting science fiction flicks of the last years. i'm glad i saw a couple of positive reviews on IMDb to decide to give the movie a chance.
The movie has this documentary feel to it (without much of that shaky-cam nonsense). I love how it isn't a forced story, things just seem to happen by a natural way. I found the air strike scenes to be riveting and i really cared about the characters - and the human race ;-)
WAYYYYYY better than "Battle for Los Angeles" (terrible movie)
7 for the movie itself, an 8 for the courageous ending.
