Notes on a Scandal (2006)
twisted, but in an engaging way
What a wonderful acting duo! This is Kate Blanchet at her best, and Judy Dench...who knew she could be so devious. Truly a fascinating story and brilliantly brought to the screen. The relationship between the two characters is addressed in a realistic and methodical manner. As in real life, these two do not become fast friends over night. In fact the glue that binds them together is anything but friendly. They slowly begin their association, first at work and then, through Ms. Dench's deft manipulation, they become inseparable. It was very intriguing to watch their relationship grow as events kept the rest of the storyline changing. The feelings of despair and abandonment felt by each main character was brilliantly portrayed. This is a real testament to real evil being relative. Who is the real evildoer?
Just a Kiss (2002)
A romantic romp through Rotomation!
This story of intertwined infidelities is both hilarious and thought provoking. The black comedy weaves around a man (Dag) who has a fatal kiss/one night stand with his best friend's (Peter's) emotionally unstable girl (Rebecca). The jilted long-time lover (Halley) has a romp of her own, and when a vengeful bowling alley bartender (Paula) sets her sights on Peter, nothing and no one is left standing in her way. The circular story and surprise ending, and the use of Rotomation to soften the really garish and evil bits, makes this entertaining for more that just the sick-minded. A brilliant script wonderfully acted and directed. A real gem.
American Chai (2001)
Fun and forceful look and crossing cultures and coming of age
I've just seen American Chai and listened to the director and actor discuss their film. I must say the portrayal of Indian American lives was most interesting. The way in which the young college students cope with their heritage, the different American mores and the humor they use to express themselves, make this a wonderful film, not just about coming of age as an Indian American, but coming of age period. The music for the film was also quite moving.
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
Visually stunning and humorous film of the unique life of Amelie.
This was a fabulous film of humor and saddness. Amelie is so unique and misunderstood. Her antics and impressions of life were a joy to watch. The film is visually stunning as well, so colorful and vibrant. I especially enjoyed the garden gnome's vacation postcards.
