Yuen fan (1984)
promising start which deteriorates into a terrible mess
The other reviewer must have seen another version of this film with a coherent script and plot. The acting is OK but I have no idea how Anita Mui won an award for her part.
There is little or no character or plot development. The screenplay seems to have been written by numerous 'writers' who weren't speaking to each other at the time as its all over the place. Apart from Maggie and Leslie I couldn't see any reason for the other characters to be there except to make up the time.
The emotions of the cast never flow or gel. Maggie blows hot and cold. One moment she's in bed with a man she's planning to marry, and literally the next minute she leaves him in floods of tears. The boss also exhibits schizophrenic tendencies, near the beginning of the film, refusing to see his lover, and half way through turning up out of the blue to tell her he's divorced his wife! His actions are never really explained (or anyone else's for that matter).
I am a Maggie Cheung lover, and have a lot of her early films simply because she is in them. I often love their quirkiness. However, for me, this film became increasingly painful to watch. I'll be giving my copy away.
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
unbelievable
Having thoroughly enjoyed the spiderman trilogy, I had been really looking forward to this latest addition to the franchise, but was sorely disappointed. I hated it. The character development was practically non-existent. The film had barely any tension for me. After 90 mins I could barely keep my eyes open it was so dull, including the action scenes. The guy who did a review on this must have been watching a different film. What I loved about the spiderman trilogy was that each film built upon the last, to my mind getting better and better - the action AND the plot and characters. By the time spiderman came to fight the Lizard in this film I wanted spiderman to lose so there wouldn't be a sequel. The forgettable actor who played spiderman (can't remember his name) was 2 dimensional and dull, as was every other character in the film. The lizard had the kindest face I've ever seen on an arch villain. What ashame he didn't kill spiderman. I spent £10 on the DVD and gave it away immediately to a charity shop. My advice to you - try BEFORE you buy. I so wish I had.
AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (2007)
literally dark
I loved AvP so I was really looking forward to this one, but was immensely disappointed. As one of the reviewers already said there is NO sense of dread or build up in tension. Everything just 'happens'. The action scenes are all shot in almost total darkness with just the occasional flicker of light to show whats happening. When the action does happen u never really know whats going on or who's winning. We never see any egg producing queen alien leaving no explanation for why there are so many aliens. Just a load of rubbish, the sort of thing that happens sometimes when a franchise gets so successful, people working on it think it will sell no matter how bad it is and don't put any effort into it.
The Turn of the Screw (1999)
tiresome
I had heard of 'TURN OF THE SCREW' and thought it sounded interesting. The novel may well have been, however, I found this adaptation grew more tiresome the longer I watched. The first time I saw Quint on the tower, I was intrigued, but by the end I'd lost all interest and couldn't wait for it to finish. This adaptation appears to have neither rhyme nor reason, and is often confusing, revealing no real explanation for any of the characters actions/reactions. Caroline Pegg who plays the starring role has a terrible posture, craning her neck out literally the whole time, her mouth open in disbelief for the vast majority of the film (seemingly her only other expression). Her acting is at best average. A lot of her dialogue sounded ridiculous. I wouldn't waste your time with this one.
The Foreigner (2003)
The worst film I have ever seen in my life
If I could have given this film 0/10 I would, and this is the first film I have wanted to rate so low. Its worse than awful. If I went to see it in the cinema I would want the cinema to pay ME for watching it (at least minimum wage). Some of the camera shots were quite effective, but a lot were rubbish eg. villains reflection in a mirror that separates his head and shoulders side-ways from his body (seeing is believing). Several totally pointless killings of innocent civilians. 2 murders that made me laugh out loud due to the victims actions/facial expressions when they were shot. I only watched it to the end (fast forwarding about 10 mins of the boring pointless dialogue) hoping to see Seagal in some decent hand to hand combat, but there was almost none of that (should have known that when at the beginning he threw someone while going down an elevator and it was shown in slow motion with music - end of 'action' scene). In one scene we see Seagal hand chop someones neck in slow motion which makes it obvious that his hand never even made contact). The chief villain keeps coming back to life. He gets shot in the chest on 2 separate occasions. The 1st time its with a shotgun which blows him out the 2nd/3rd floor onto the street. To sum up, this film is a total waste of time and a total joke. It looks very low budget (even for Seagal). The colour is dull and grey. I could go on and on....just like this film, but I wont. Watch this film if you've got insomnia. Its guaranteed to put you to sleep.
