Solaris (2002)
Comments Stanislaw Lem's (and myself)
What about the Soderbergh's film? What are the good and the bad points of the movie? Lem: l though I admit that Soderbergh's vision is not devoid of ambition, taste and climate, I am not delighted with the prominence of love. Solaris may be perceived as a river basin - and Soderbergh chose only one of its tributaries. The main problem seems the fact that even such a tragic-romantic adaptation seems too demanding for mass audience fed with Hollywood pap. If in the future someone else dared a faithful adaptation, I am afraid the effects would be understood only by a tiny audience.
I read the book, and I think that in fact that book is about the unattainable, and inconceivable. More of the unattainable love, than Lem himself said. It is in the subconscious of the book. I really loved Soderbergh's film. It's about God too.
Dekalog: Dekalog, dwa (1989)
For me the strongest of the Dekalogs. A masterpiece of the great director
"Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain" . The second in Kieslowski's film meditations on the ten commandments, Dekalog 2 is a tale about deep human questions, about life and death- but it is a simple story. Yes, it is an all-too-straightforward and unflinching story like all episodes. Yes, this is a very linear story.
Still, as in all the Dekalog films, the real story is behind the story somehow, lying in wait for the thoughtful viewer.
We can see the doctors's story for example, what we need a little imagination. We can know his tragedy only seeing his flat. Or we can know , who the woman stares at the end of the movie...
