DarkWolf (2003)
Oh My God! Its so bad that its Scary. A student film.
I am not even going to try to explain the plot. I dont usually write comments, but this one is just asking for it. It is neither stylish and believable as in American Werewolves nor is it as punchy as From dusk till dawn. I feel so sorry for the actors who put their faith in this director-wannabe only to have their dreams slashed to pieces. Where should i start? The opening sequence was promising, then when the action begins, it all falls to pieces. The director do not know how to frame a shot to maximise intensity. He probably did not storyboard the sequence, hence the lame execution of the biker handcuff bar scene. Acting here looks stiff. Then when the wolf grabs the black dude in the front passenger seat, the director chose all the stupidest excuse for the main hero not to be able to rescue him. So black dude died, and then the anti climax, bam! wolf escapes thro backdoor. whoa! was that a wolf?? oh my god! that was the silliest CGI wolf i have seen in ages. American werewolf in Paris is far superior. And thats just the first 10 minutes of the show.... all film students should watch this! the all-not-to-do-things in a movie. oh.. and that ape suit does not fool an intelligent viewer. Horrible! Horrible!
Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000)
its an underrated film, good on its on merit.. i luved it!
I think it's a good movie. You don't really know which direction it was going and kind of has a nice twist to it. It still uses gimmicks but it kind of work for that sense of creepiness. It plays on your paranoia.. brilliant stuff. a good follow up. should also listen to the director's interesting commentary on how the term "documentary" or "shaky" camera technique has been abused.
American Nightmare (2002)
The scariest movie of them all... yeah right!
My god, this is so bad that it is scary... i couldn't even get past the first 20 mins (maybe less, but who's checking anyway?) of the movie. The first murder scene in the bush was pretty decent. Then followed by the cheap looking opening credit ( it's just bad... no sense of timing, visual composition, atmosphere etc.. the idea is there but it's just so amateurish..) . Go check "almost famous" to see how it should be done. ok let's move on. Then the radio-show scene where they're all seated in a pub or something.. god, the lighting is so horrendous that your sense of imagination just refuse to work, everything is so fake, the faces of the actors are just not right (bad casting), on top of that, the acting is b-grade. The pop quiz question is a good spin-off from "scream" but "Scream" it isnt. nice try though. Badly shot/storyboarded. Execution is just not there, and what's with the flat lighting? the director is not ready for a feature film . period. its just too amatuerish for me. give me my money back, i bet i can make a better movie. You want real horror? go see "henry: portrait of a serial killer" - that's low budget with class.
Unbreakable (2000)
Wonderful piece of film-making
This movie is riveting and I think almost flawless. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but you can't deny the fact that this one hell of a movie. I prefer to call it, a thinking man's movie, a prelude to X-men, if you will. It is a little slow, but it is also very real. It is a little bit claustrophobic at times. They should have spent a little bit more money on creating an actual train collision. That would have magnified the scale of the movie. Try this, watch this movie first, then go and watch the X-men.
