An Inspector Calls (2006)
Er war 17 und es war sein erster Film, dafür wars doch schon mal gut ;)
I have now dealt quite extensively with Stephan and his work and what you used to read on his blog. *An Inspector Calls* was his first film when he was only 17/18 years old and started. Sure, not a cinematic masterpiece and the technique certainly wasn't the best, but hey... we all started somewhere! There has been a definite leap over the years in terms of quality, performers and everything around it, and that leap has been steep! Hope to see more from him! For later I definitely recommend *The Power of Dreams*, *Phantom* and for comedy lovers of dark humor *Cast me!* This is his only film in English, all the others are only in German, but they are definitely worth seeing!
*An Inspector calls* - based on the 2006 play by John B. Priestley, a student production. 6/10.
Die Macht der Träume (2016)
As a fan of Christopher Reeve I can only say that this film is simply great!
I used to be and still am a huge Christopher Reeve fan and when I saw this Stephan Taubert film I was moved to tears. As a freelance filmmaker without a large budget, one certainly cannot expect Hollywood cinema from Stephan, which he certainly knows, but what distinguishes him from most others is not only that he attaches great importance to the best possible quality with the few resources he has but also always finds a good story that is very touching, as in the case of *The Power of Dreams*, and is based on true events. Other filmmakers deliver nothing but junk, bloodthirsty blunt horror that says nothing and nobody really cares, but story is what matters most here. Christopher Reeve was not only Superman in the cinema, but also a Superman in real life after his riding accident and Stephan had to adapt the story a bit to his possibilities, but with his great direction, his great acting and the great cast (Marie & Paul Spinka , Marie Rothe, Reinhardt Großmann, Ivette Große, and others) he created a really, really good film that shouldn't be missed. I wish so much for him to have more success with it and get back to filmmaking because I think he still has good stories to tell. But this film is his best work, as an actor and director! You can see how much love and passion is behind it! 10/10.
Phantom (2018)
Maybe not the newest story, but a successful film experiment...
I became aware of Stephan Taubert and his films by chance and looked at some of his works. At first I was a bit skeptical, but his earlier works can no longer be compared with the latter. *Phantom* is his last film from 2018 so far and hopefully not the last. He always plays a role himself and also directs it, which I think is pretty cool and I enjoy watching it. Compared to some others in the freelance film scene, you at least get good stories from him that make you think or can simply be entertaining. You can't reinvent the wheel today, but the story of *Phantom* in particular may not be new, but in my opinion it's a good cinematic experiment, and it's a success. He directs well, has good actors and the whole thing looks much more exciting in black and white. Let's take a good mix of Psycho and James Bond, paired with a story of its own and we have *Phantom*. It's only in the last few minutes that you'll be able to guess who the killer is anyway, and then some things that might seem strange are explained, but at the end they're well explained. Good work Stephan, I hope to be able to see new films from you in the future and that Corona hasn't ruined everything.
