Justified: City Primeval (2023)
Justified Mis-Givens:Nothing the same but the hat
Reaction falling into two camps at the moment. Love the show or hate it, and it seems to be the Elmore Leonard fans in the latter group. Me too. None of Justified's signature humor made it to the new show. The blue lens palette is annoying as if we couldn't tell we're in an urban vibe. The casting is fine for any other show, but we are in the Leonard universe. We need some characters around Raylan, and soon.
Casting Olyphant's daughter is a mistake. This is a major vehicle and she hasn't learned her craft sufficiently for the screen time. She doesn't know how to walk on camera from here to there, for god's sake. Also, if they plan a romance between Raylan and Carolyn Wilder, the casting there was a big mistake. All Elmore heroes like slender women. Exclusively. Halle Berry would have been perfect.
Will keep watching, but not confident the Justified vibe can be revived.
Warrior Women with Lupita Nyong'o (2019)
Watch this instead of Woman King
A one hour documentary of the Dahomey tribe narrated by Lupita Nyong'o as she travels to Benin to discover the story of the Agojie women warriors. The first 45 minutes are what you'd expect, the last 15 minutes will blow those expectations away. Ms Nyong'o finds some survivors of the Dahomey's reign and they tell the truth about the horrors inflicted on the neighboring tribes by the Agojie. A little research provides the wider picture. The Dahomey enslaved more Africans than any other tribe, and sold those slaves to the West. Displayed some truly horrific bloodletting along the way.
The Woman King is basically Birth of A Nation for the woke audience. But totally, laughably bogus as history. Viola Davis wants your money and is willing to shame you for it. Don't be fooled. Watch this documentary--available on Youtube, instead.
