While this movie has nothing to do with the source material, but if you ignore that element the movie is a interesting experience. The story is really complicated on how it handle itself with plot holes and things that don't make sense. I found the writing to be a complete mess on how the filmmakers even did the script for this movie. Is this originally a different movie before it was made into a Mario bros movie? The setting of Mushroom Kingdom looks like something from Blade Runner in this movie. While it looks nothing like it, it looks pretty good on how they build this set and the theme its going for. Another flaw with the movie is the tone on how the soundtrack sounds cheerful, but it doesn't match with it scenes it place into it. But I found the movie to be pretty fun with the bizarre nature of the movie and the action are entertaining to watch.
The acting itself is another thing to talk about. Bob Hoskins as Mario is a fine choice since he does look like him and his acting is decent for the most part. John Leguizamo as Luigi isn't good and I'm not convince that he's that character. This movie doesn't have a Princess Peach, but instead Princess Daisy for some reason. Her backstory is just weird at the opening of the movie and the character acts more like a love interest to Luigi. Dennis Hopper as King Koopa is another thing to talk about and is a weird actor choice for the character. He gives off a bizarre performance in the movie and it's pretty fun to watch on how he did his performance in it.
The goombas and Yoshi looks nothing like the video game counterparts, but the practical effects looks pretty good on how much work they put onto them.
Overall, it's a bizarre movie that worth checking out on what its going for and is a so bad, it's good type of movie.
