Fisherman's Friends: One and All (2022)
Disapointing
Must admit I never see bloopers in films, but I saw two terrible continuation errors in this film. First one a character is carrying a laptop in one hand and then it is in his other hand. The other I shall leave to you to see but it is very obvious and distracts you. Bit sloppy and lazy.
The script is weak and seems the story is made up as they go along.
James Purefoy is an excellent actor.and deserves better than this.
But if you can switch off and go with the flow the film is worth watching for the scenery.
Hard to see a third film being made as this is very similar to the first film.
Maybe I am too harsh as there is not much you can do with a group of singers.
Murder in Reverse? (1945)
Bit dull
William Hartnell.is usually worth a watch, but this film IMO is a bit disappointing.
Hartnell character. Masterick is wrongly jailed for the murder of. Fred Smith.
The jury found him guilty of murder, but bizarrely requested mercy - presumably being hanged would of made the film too short.
We jump 15 years to Masterick's release from Prison.
Materick is out to prove Smith is still alive - to prove his innocence.
The film title is a spoiler.
Mastrerick finds Smith and kills him. He believes he can not be charged for murder twice.
Not sure on the law but it is obvious you can not kill people without some punishment.
Sliding Doors (1998)
great film
I am not one for romcoms but I was glad I recorded this film and watched it. Not giving anything away but having two Helens was brilliant. I admit I forgot who was who for a couple of minutes during the film.
But it is a rollercoaster of emotions.
Very surprised it has a low rating, it is film that can be enjoyed by all adults.
Adventures of a Taxi Driver (1976)
Not sexy or funny
Problem with sex comedies is they are not sexy or funny. Most are cheaply made to make some easy cash. Of course before the internet these films had a captive market - men.
There are worse film than this - if you are British and over 50 you will see a few familiar faces.
Instant Family (2018)
Just right
I go out my way to avoid films with kids, I have seen so many that just make you think yuck.
But this film is not a lazily put together - feel good film.
Watching the film you will feel good but also bad.
You get to know the characters and realise they are not all pulling in the same direction, so something has to give.
It is a very good film you will want to watch more than once.
N easy ride - it is a rollercoaster.
The Helpers (2012)
Not too bad
This film has the look of being made on the cheap to make some cash. One of the characters thinks he is Alfred Hitchcock and films everything. So a lot of viewing is through his camera.
Routine format of travelers staying at a motel, then it gets nasty.
I think it is a mistake not letting us get to know the characters. You do not really care what happens to the good / bad guys.
Worth streaming to see but I would not pay to see it.
Melody (1971)
Film has not aged well
I saw SWALK at the Cinema, it was shown with Oliver.
Then a boy I fell for Tracy Hyde and thought the film was great, better than Oliver. I would of rated the film 9 or 10
I watched the film recently. The Tracy magic has gone I am afraid it not a very good film. Chucking in a few Bee Gees songs does not save it.
In rating the film now. I am torn between my childhood rating and adult. I have gone for an honest 5/10.
Military Wives (2019)
Give it a try
I was in two minds whether to watch the film (on Amazon). The title doesn't sell the film.
At the start of the film one of the women says to her husband - I am going to be a single mother for six months. He then leaves her to go an Op.
She of course is left with the kids and the worry of his safety.
The women join together to help each other pull through. One of the activities is to form a choir.
I doubt a group of women could come together and sing so well so quickly but it would be boring viewing watching them learn to sing.
the film is an emotional rollercoaster.
Watch and enjoy a memorable film.
The Good Liar (2019)
Good film
I guess many reviews of this film will say X is not realistic. With that mindset you will not enjoy this film or 90% of other films.
Good cast does not mean good film but here it does.
Opening sequence shows Roy completing an internet dating site profile, he is laying the bait for Betty.
They meet up and Roy is thinking about her cash. Betty is thinking is he the one.
Roy's plan seems to be working but then it does not go to plan.
The film has a few bits chucked in to pad it out but overall it is very enjoyable.
I can guarantee you will watch parts of the film more than once.
Midway (2019)
Good but not great
An American chewing gum winning the war. Thankfully he ran out of gum and the film became more realistic.
I watched the film on TV, I think it would of been better on the big screen.
The action sequences were good but as usual the good guys could shoot a fly 100 yards away, while the bad guys couldn't hit a barn door.. But that is the nature of films, otherwise the stars get killed.
Japanese were shown in a good light. I think this was an error. I know victors write history but not many would doubt the Japanese were very harsh during the war.
I must admit I didn't like any of the characters and did not care whether they made it home or not. I think the film is to blame for this by concentrating on a few aircrews. You know they are going to make it, they are the stars.
I judge a film by whether I would watch it again, I am in no rush to see this again.
The Rover (2014)
depressing
I saw the storyline and thought it would be good.
I was wrong.
The film is about 100 minutes long IMO 80 minutes too long.
I kept it on in the background expecting something to happen but it never did.
Thankfully I saw it on Amazon, if I had gone to a Cinema I would of walked out. Only advantage of watching this at the cinema is the person eating most of the time would of stopped you going to sleep.
The Holiday (2006)
kills time
Nice rom com.
Might seem a silly criticism but the cast are too good looking.
I can not see someone like Diaz being lonely.
But it is harmless fun. A bonus for me was seeing Eli Wallach.
Once seen I doubt you will bother to watch it again.
Lorena (2019)
Dull
Painful for the guy but painful for viewers.
Keeps your attention for about 10 minutes but then everybody just repeats - she cut his dick off.
Are we supposed to laugh or cross our legs ?
Not sure, but I got to the point I didn't care and switched off half way through.
I see some reviews say watch it all but 30 minutes of people repeating the same line was enough for me.
The Equalizer 2 (2018)
Disappointed
Disappointed.
I really enjoyed the first film. In the first a few good characters helped the film along.
The sequel doesn't have any good characters. It feels like a few action sequences have been stuck together to make the time up.
It is really a lazy film, just going through the motions.
The Battle of the River Plate (1956)
Looking dated now
A good film but the special effects are no longer special.
It is very obvious some ships are models and this distracts you and takes you out the film.
Later in the film a radio news reporter is used - which gives the situation a circus feel.
A top cast can not save this one.
Downsizing (2017)
Disappointing
A film of two halves.
The first half of this film is excellent. I would rate the first half eight or nine.
Fresh and lively. People made small and start new lives. It is well made and entertaining.
But halfway through it literally loses the plot.
A time filler, lazily made and dull.
Shame as it could have been a great film. But it is just one of those films you will regret spending time to watch.
Catwoman (2004)
Fun
Usually the rating on IMDb is a good guide to a film. Not in this case. I rated the film 8 most probably is a 7 but I wanted to boost the average. I had the film on in the background as background noise but I stopped using my PC and watched the film. It got and kept my attention. All films are easy to pick holes in but if you sit back and go with the flow you will enjoy this film.
Where Eagles Dare (1968)
Well written adventure
If you have not seen this film you are in for a treat. Do not watch it believing you can sit back as it is just an adventure film. You have to pay attention to fully enjoy the sub plots. The plot is a group of men trying to release an American General held captive in a German castle. The General knows the Allies war plans so has to be freed before the Germans make him talk. Like all films it is easy to pick holes, most probably the biggest hole is at the mission briefing at the very start of the film. A character suggests bombing the castle to stop the General talking. That would be the logical response to the situation but if they did that there wouldn't be a film! So as with all films you have to give it a bit of slack. In summary it is a great film that I have watched many times.
Inglourious Basterds (2009)
Roller-coaster
This is not the usual WW2 film with Germans being nasty at the start and the Allies beating them in the end. I enjoyed the film as I was lulled into thinking I knew what was going to happen and got it wrong a few times. About half way through you give up predicting the way the film will go as you got it wrong a few times already. Some reviews have said it is patchy because of the changes in direction but I believe the twists make the film better. When watching the film I thought it was a mistake to have real life characters involved as we all know how Hitler etc died. But I admit the weight of real life characters made the story stronger and built the tension. A great film when watched for the first time, but I think when you know the twists the film is a lot weaker, not one for the DVD collection.
Hostel (2005)
Hostel - A good film
I am amazed this film has been given a low rating by everyone. Most probably because there are no big "stars". I judge a film on its own merits rather than who is in it or who the director is etc. This film is better than the Saw series and other cut and slash films as you get to know the characters before the cutting and slashing begins. Three guys are out drinking looking for females and go to a hostel where they are led to believe there are girls and more girls all willing to have sex.The honey trap is set. Looking back after watching the film the girls most probably did more than they had to but most guys will not complain about that. The guys are then held captive and tortured by people who have paid to torture/kill people. As with any film there are unlikely events but who wants to watch boring real life. It is a film I will watch again in the future.
