The Ordinaries (2022)
German film-making finally takes the innovative route again
I am very critical of our film-making which is either outright boring and too ordinary (haha), or consists of period dramas from WW II or some other war or crisis. The Ordinaries is different, it feels fresh and new. Don't take the whole thing too seriously, see it as a surrealistic allegory, cherish it for the nice ideas it has, its humor and its seamless execution. The only flaw is that the audio sometimes feels a little off, I think there was a lot of dubbing in post-production involved. But the performances of the cast, the low key, but well executed special effects, the cinematography and the creativity involved make this a really enjoyable movie.
Kevin Can F**k Himself (2021)
Good ideas but the writing unfortunately lacks
Someone like Vince Gilligan would have done something amazing with this idea. It could have been a new Breaking Bad. Unfortunately they hired somebody else. The problem is that they do not explain enough why there is no alternative to kill Kevin. Allison is very erratic in her behaviour but noone really questions her actions. It is too hamfisted what the writers want to say, especially with her character. We get it, she is supposed to be the oppressed woman breaking free. But why not just leaving? Also they concentrate too much on everyone's love stories instead of on the crime part. I really love the idea with the two seperate worlds even though after season one they need to start to do more with that. It is a pity that the writing is not nuanced enough and too soap-y. I am unsure if I will pick it up the next season.
Kevin Can F**k Himself: New Patty (2021)
Starting to go downhill
I loved the premise in the first few episodes. It was a breath of fresh air. But now the story starts to lose me because they do not explain enough why Allison can't just leave him. My suspension of disbelief is just not strong enough. Why does she have to murder him? She could just pack up her things and start a life somewhere else. They don't have children, there is nothing really holding her back. In the first episodes they kind of show hints that she also has some psychological problems and doesn't believe in therapy. But it should be shown more that there are other ways out. Patty just instantly is on board with the plan without asking the obvious question: Why do you need to do this? If Kevin is such an idiot he wouldn't even find her. This slowly turns into the same "man bad, woman good" story that we have in abundance now. Please put some more nuance into this.
Only Murders in the Building: The Tell (2022)
Too much suspension of disbelief
I like the atmosphere of the show. The chemistry mostly works and it just is very charming. But when it gets too stupid I can't really suspend my disbelief any more. Where is the police? A person was murdered in the building, it wasn't ruled a suicide like last time, it was a murder. So nobody checks in the murder victim's apartment for mail, a missing painting, a secret elevator, a gigantic vent in the floor with evidence in it, secret passageways in the whole building??? I know it is an old fashioned detective show. But maybe they should have somehow made the catastrophic police work more plausible. Or maybe I should just switch my brain off and enjoy it for what it is. I still feel like the first season was more clever in grounding in reality, at least partly.
