Halloween (1978)
9/10
A true scare fest.
6 January 2023
Just as Jaws did for horror beneath the sea, Michael Myers did for horror behind the mask. This low budget, independent film was an instant success, and proved that originality can be created, regardless of budget. It may be a little bit dated, a little rough around the edges, but it's that lack of polish, of over editing that works so well. I cannot decide which scene I'll be reimagining tonight as I try to drift off into the land of nod, possibly the grim death in the garage, but this a film i won't be forgetting in a hurry. That music!!!

Rob Zombie later remade this film, but be honest, it wasn't a patch on this, a pale imitation.

Halloween (2007)

Quite a lifeless slasher.

I know a lot of fans will be stunned to hear that I've not seen the original, this is my first Halloween film. I was told to prepare for all manner of scares and thrills.....I waited patiently, but no scares, no thrills come to that, after an interesting initial half an hour, it turned into tedium, where the only desire Rob Zombie intended, was to shock with violence, if brutality is your thing, feast on this, but for depth and plot, look away now. Too much focus on why Michael did what he does the psychology behind it, it needed suspense, it offered none.

My mission is to watch the original, I only hope it's better than this.

Jaws (1975)
10/10
The masterclass of suspense.
27 December 2022
Steven Spielberg will forever be linked with some of the greatest movies on all time, everyone knows Jaws, and everyone will recognise the iconic music. Superior to the mostly disappointing follow ups that came, nothing quite matched this.

Jaws shows the power of film, a film that changed people's perceptions of white sharks for decades, fortunately people have a much better understanding of the majestic apex predators these days.

Action packed, fast moving, it's the threat of what's lurking beneath that makes this such a thrill ride, with a land predator you can see it, with a shark, you have no idea where it's going to spring from.

Iconic lines throughout, it's not without a touch of humour.

An OK movie.

In my defence, I don't know the story, so had no idea what to expect. It's a decent film, the earlier Murder on The Orient was much better, this was very stylish, but the story, maybe just didn't quite work so well. Wonder woman Gal Gadot definitely looked incredible, but I'm not sure she was the right casting, I wasnt sure if I liked or loathed that character. It looked nice, wonderful locations, and the club scenes looked great. My main issue, was the ending, aside from being underwhelming, I just didn't really understand it, was it different in the book? That moustache though, that was cool.

Exciting, action packed, Craig's final Bond.
26 December 2022
Daniel Craig signs off with his final Bond movie No time to die an epic, relentless action thriller, which throws everything at the viewer, No Time to die wants to entertain you, thrill you, even move you to tears, it does most things very well, but one thing didn't work, Rami Malek, his character was overdone, the epitome of the Bond villain, for a modern audience I thought he was overplayed. Best of all, that supercharged ending, it had the room in tears. Lea Seydoux was incredibly good as Madeleine, many fans will never forget her! You can't read a movie page or magazine without speculation as to who's next, but Bond continues, regardless of actor.

Exciting visuals, the main element is sadly missing.
26 December 2022
Wakanda Forever was a film I approached with a degree of caution, simply because of the missing element, Chadwick Boseman, who's gargantuan efforts in the first film have changed my opinion of that film, from initial disappointment, to a healthy respect and admiration. Wakanda Forever is just missing something, a driving force, and despite Leticia Wright and Angela Bassett both nailing it, something is missing. The actual plot is the big disappointment, it was hard to swallow that another race could have existed for so long, yet remain unknown, it was maybe too dialog laden as well. Sometimes you're just aware of a movie's running time.

Dune (2021)
10/10
An epic space blockbuster.
26 December 2022
What did Dune et so right, that many blockbusters in recent times have got so badly wrong? Dune dispelled the idea that all remakes are inferior to their predecessors, Dune is the first installment, and it is a sweeping, epic saga, striking to look at, hypnotic to listen to. The rather complex ideas are much more easily understood here, than in the original, which is often a little confusing. I wasnt initially convinced that Chalomet was the right choice, but he gets it just right. The music, by legendary Hans Zimmer is worth checking out too, hypnotic melodies. The second film has a lot to live up to, hopefully it will be as good as this.

Epic, but missing something
26 December 2022
A long time in the making, there was a lot of excitement surrounding this film. I watched it teicw, just so that I could give a balanced review, initially I thought it was terrific, my second viewing exposed some of the film's shortcomings. It's an improvement over the first in terms of CGI and special effects, not that they were bad in the last, but technology has moved on since then, but the plot, that's the issue, it's not as exciting or gripping as it could have been, and it's a little harder to engage and empathise with the characters. It's a little more family drama, as opposed to sweeping Sci Fi epic.
