Blue Beetle (2023)
Heartwarming superhero family tale
There's nothing new in the story. The acting is really good but I love the family dynamic and the representation. I love the chemistry between the main leads and the background of social issues. It's very realistic and I love the little moments of history sprinkled through the series. It's very self-aware and the music is great. The effects were well made but I love the ending when the community gathered to help the family. It was very touching, especially in a moment of grief. We can't get enough of these perspectives as we never really know who needs to watch it at this moment in their life.
Even though it's not going to be my new favorite move or superhero film, I can recommend this movie if you take it for what it is.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Prophecy Comes True (2024)
BLUE PANCAKES
Yes, we finally witness the famous blue pancakes. While I wish the show made time for the little things and we had more/longer episodes - the ending set up quite nicely for the rest of the series. While I felt it rushed a little bit towards the end and we lose out on some stuff from the books, they found their own pacing and made this story their own.
Jam packed with unique settings that allow the audience with more vibrant and dynamic landscapes as opposed to the flair and pizzaz the original movies gave - we find ourselves with a piece of humbling art that speaks to our inner child.
This episode in particular is ties everything in a neat ribbon signalliing the end of the season. Beginning with the emotional moment in Mount Olympus with Percy and his father and the distance between them. Endind with th betrayal of his mentor and friend and shattering Annabeth's entire world. They recover like children, slowly accepting the world for what it is and finding their footing in what's good and pure.
Sally takes note of Kronos' nightmare visits and we get the cherry on top with Gabe turning into stone. The fight between Ares and Percy feel a little anticlimactic and so does Poseidon's surrender. But the series overall feels promising and exciting, bringing back the wonder of greek mythology and youthful adventure.
I am especially looking forward to seeing Thlia, Nico and Rachel and whether they would incorporate the Roman element. Rick Riordan has done a wonderful job building this world so running out of material is the last of their worries.
Last thoughts, I hope we get to see more Percy and Annabeth scenes. They're both really coming into their own. As actors and the characters. Good job everyone! Looking forward to more!
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: We Find Out the Truth, Sort Of (2024)
Finding the bolt seemed a little anti-climactic
I'm still really hopeful for the series but watching it one by one as opposed to binging it is a good change but it's also a lot more difficult to keep the audience engaged. While I appreciate the world building and how the Underworld looks, especially tartarus and the Field of Ashpodel, I find the conclusion of the episode about how Poseidon will only meet Percy when he knows who he is feels a little bit contradictory to how Percy can fully know himself without knowing his father - but of course, the overall message of knowing yourself despite these things you can't control.
I'm a litte bit dissapointed at how they introduce gods. I'm hoping theres more action and more dynamic personalities or wrting from these gods but so far Ares is the only one that comes alive to me. I'm hoping the last few episodes turn out better.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2023)
Wise Girl
I wish they made the lotus casino a little more whimsical and exciting. But I supose it seems more realistic in the actual plot of things. I really liked how Annabeth reasoned that Grover forgot more than the others because he was alone. As much as I love Lin, I admit he did take me out of the universe a little bit.
Percy's relationship with his father and the overall message about parenting is something I don't fully understand but I appreciate that they're sending more of a message now compared to how the books handled the recklessness of the parents.
I found the "you guys bicker like an old married couple" comment pretty cute. The chemistry between the two leads are starting to develop and I hope they keep it very wholesome. I'm really excited for the plot to progrss further and for us to meet more characters!
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers (2024)
she finally said it
Let me start off by saying how much I loved the gruffiness and character of Ares. He's edgy and wild and a little comedic. It makes his character a little bit more complex and fun. I loved how vulnerable Annabeth is in this episode. She started off with a little more edge and a harder mask because of her past but her heart is growing so much more on this quest.
It's been awhile since I read the books but I remembered feeling very empathetic towards Hephaestus. His story is heartbreaking and even though he was vengeful, we know how abandoned he felt. He wasn't in episode as much as I'd like but they showed in him in a really beautiful light. I'm not gonna lie, I nearly teared up.
Annabeth's seniment towards the end of the episode is so real because it really only takes one person to inspire us to be better. But of course, we can't forget just how smart Grover really is. I love how they made his character a lot more observant and curious.
He isn't as nervous and anxious, instead he's very good at getting people to trust him. He's a very reliable character and I love how he's the glue that holds the trio together. I'm looking forward to the next episode after the cliff-hanger they left us on!
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: I Plunge to My Death (2024)
I wish it was longer!
This episode felt a lot like a classic filler. And yet it was such an important episode to really showcase the relationsip and the perspective the gods have with their children. It was also really beautiful to see Percy's hero building and his growing relationship with annabeth. We never really got to see them together like in the books in the original movies so I'm really looking forward to how they build that.
Moreover, the duality of how loyal annabeth is to her mom and how percy sees his dad is so fascinating. It gives such an honest look at parenting and how we see high powers in the world. I can't believe we're left off at a cliffhanger, quite literally. But introducing percy's powers little by little is really smart because they can use them as twists especially for people who've never read the books or watched the old movies. Although some parts are starting to feel a bit rushed and there are a few changes with the book that i'm noticing. I hope they stay true to the heart of the story and the characters.
Your Christmas or Mine? (2022)
was ugly crying towards the end
I watched this movie with my boyfriend and we were very pleased! We really liked the trailer and we watched Sex Education in the past so we had some expectations. But we loved how cute the families were and how imperfect they were. The main leads were so charming in their own ways and had so much personalities. It's so beautiful to see a couple have very minimal scenes together and yet have so much chemistry. Their budding new love and the way their relationship grows even though they're far apart was very well done. It has just enough chessiness for a Christmas movie while stil being wholesome and funny. It's such a cozy, winter romance - I highly recommend it.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium (2023)
I wish they took a little more liberties with Medusa's character!
I was genuinely shocked at how they got away from the furies and how little reaction alecto has to her sister being killed. I love how much detail they added to this journey. The short conversations that each of them have with their personal developments and the challenges to their values and loyalties.
I find Grover's character to be really pure and his little song is so cute. I love the little social issue digs the show has without being too on the nose about things. Lin Manuel Miranda being Hermes was really surprising and funny. It's so interesting how we can compare the books and the original movies to this show. The upgrade to the graphics, contuinal relevancy to modern times and staying true to the original material and details meant a lot to me. While I wish they kept Annabeth's grey eyes and Percy's dark hair, I really appreciate how these kids protray the characters.
Their argument in the basement really shows that they're just kids, trying to figure things out. The Hero's Journey is given the full weight of stakes. Alecto's death could've had more screentime but I think they've encountered that character enough.
Excited to see more!
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023)
Wovey has my heart! <3
The first act was really interesting because we are reintroduced to Panem in a more realistic but different but familiar light. Lucy Gray is a true performer and just in luck that's exactly what they needed to keep the games going. Highbottom and Dr. Gaul are seen as the dark and light symbols of the path Snow's fate is subject to. While all the characters are pretty transparent about their intentions, their values change and grow overtime and their means to the end are seen as what makes them who they are. I love that the story mimics a lot of the songs that were sung. It makes me wonder what a musical based on the Hunger Games universe would look and sound like.
The ending leaves a lot of questions for the audience and I hope this is a standalone movie. The song with the scene about lucy gray and the katniss is enough for all of us to assume or imagine how things turned out. Including Snow asking Tigris what she thinks. While I don't change my views towards Snow despite hearing his story, I find it interesting that he builds up so much resentment for the world because of a girl. While this is realistic and it's happened before, it's a fascinating notion that he hates Katniss Everdeen and the districts so much because a girl broke his heart.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom (2023)
Annabeth is too cute!!!
I really appreciate how much diversity they have on the show. But I can't say I'm not just a little bit sad that they don't look like how I pictured them in my head after reading and rereading the books over and over. But they make up for it by having the personalities pretty spot on. What's interesting is seeing actual kids in camp, in the books it's so easy to feel the weight of demigods but in the show you see actual kids fighting and it's really refreshing. It gives you a different feel altogether. I'm excited to see where the show goes. Especially Luke and Grover's characters. The claiming part was a bit anticlimactic and we haven't really heard about the prophecy yet. But the quest announcement did seem a little rushed. Overall, it's a really enjoyable show if you take it for what it is - just some demigods doing demigod things.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher (2023)
💖 It's finally here!!!
I've been anticipating this show ever since it was announced and I've been patient through all the recasting and delays. I'm really satisfied with how it turned out. Because it's a tv show and not a movie, they had more time to introduce the characters and the universe. I really loved what they did with Sally (the mom) because she has so much more agency and strength compared to how she was written in the books and portrayed in the movie. I love what they did with Grover too. This CGI is really clear and beautiful and the action scenes weren't too overwhelming. Looking forward to see more! :)!
