John Wick (2014)
One of the best action films ever
John Wick is absolutely one of my favourite films every, if not the the top. Everything about this film is well thought out and tight. The music is excellent, paring beautifully and fitting well with scenes. The cinematography is absolutely outstanding, the fight scenes are incredible, visceral and have a much greater sense of urgency and reality compared to other films. The story is plain but that is exactly what the films needs. It's almost ridiculous plot, if anything, adds to it's greatness. John Wick would do everything he did for something so "minor". The way the world is shown not told is also exceptional. It feels deep and interesting and real albeit over the top at times. This is done better than the later films which give too much exposition for the various things/factions. The way people just know who John is is wonderful to and seem scared.
Everything is very well put together even down to the interestingly coloured subtitles when people speak languages other than English.
Would absolutely watch again and again (and that would be near my 10th watch)
Koala Man (2023)
An excellent comedy romp
I first watched Koala man as a series of YouTube shorts and when I first heard of the series I was very excited. I am pleased to say I have not been disappointed by Michael Cusack's latest series. I have appreciated most of his work and style and this series is absolutely no exception. I like the animation stlye, it's oddly sloppy but well done nature is something I appreciate. The jokes lead from banal everyday events taken to their comedic extreme with a man dressed as a koala. I don't know why but the Australian accent adds a lot to the humour for me, I know it's part of the Aussie thing but still the voice actors delivery and accent for me adds to the humour. It's very much the style my friends and I have enjoyed whilst we were growing up and I am pleased it now has a series and recognition. I hope it goes a long way.
Velma (2023)
I tried to enjoy it but failed.
A series that I was interested to see, when I saw the alterations from the traditional Scooby-Doo I didn't care. Ifs good to show diversity and representation. The animation is acceptable, however, the story is absolutely awful. Why is everyone other than Norville so utterly reprehensible? It's like everyone is just constantly mean to each other and not even with any sort of witty banter. The self referential nature of the program also breaks immersion for me. It's so tongue-in-cheek and 4th wall breaking that it detracts from story rather than adding to it. What story it does have is also incredibly boring. The mysteries have barely started and seems to be a minor plot, instead everyone cares about the length of Fred's genitals.
