Do ma daan (1986)
Kung Fu Hustle meets John Woo...Except better!
This film is simply amazing. It is the most entertaining movie I have ever seen and it is well filmed. This movie didn't have the biggest budget, but it has the largest ambition.
I would recommend seeing Farewell My Concubine(great movie) first to better understand the setting of this movie, which takes place in 1920's China. Once you have seen Farewell My Concubine, this movie becomes much more accessible to the casual viewer.
Peking Opera Blues has a bit of everything...and then some. Tons of comedy, excellent action sequences, dramatic twists, well implemented music, fast pacing, etc. Peking Opera Blues has all the ingredients of a recipe for success, and I would say it is the ultimate light hearted flick.
NOTE: The once infamous subs are now fixed with YesAsia's version of the DVD. It has a really clear image too. Buy it now!
Annie Hall (1977)
Most overrated movie of the 70's, which is saying a lot
I saw this movie in a New Humanities class. What a waste of 93 minutes. The viewing was in the afternoon, around 2:00, and I could barely keep my eyes open while watching this snore-fest.
This movie is not funny. Many of my fellow students were laughing at Allen just because he is such a loser and over-analyzes everything. Well whoop-dee-doo. There is no explosiveness to this alone...it's like telling the story of a joke but forgetting the punchline. But this style of comedy is praised because it's supposedly "sophisticated." Yeah, right. There was only one sophisticated joke that made me laugh. This joke was about meta-physics, and I actually let out a brief chuckle. There were 30 people screening the movie with me, and it went over every one of their heads. Yes, I was the only one who understood the joke enough to laugh. I'm considered to be a pretty sophisticated guy, and it's a sad testament to a film if it does not even appeal to its target audience. That's because anyone who is intelligent enough to know what these Woody Allen sex and obscurity jokes actually mean has enough sense not to laugh at the trash. This just reinforces the fact that it's overrated.
Another reason why I say confidently that not only Annie Hall is overrated, but Woody Allen in general is that he received multiple Oscar nominations. What a joke. You're telling me that Woody Allen is the best director, best screenwriter, and one of the best actors in a leading role? For this garbage? Well, I guess it's safe to say that Woody Allen single handedly beat the entire film industry with this movie then. When Orson Welles received similar praise from the Academy for Citizen Kane, it was 1941, and he beat the odds by making a decent flick back when movies had an excuse to suck...and there was almost no quality competition.
This film should be praised for its realism, seeing as it is just as funny as your average Joe Schmoe's non-eventful life...which isn't worth viewing in the first place. One thing's for sure, this movie does not deserve a tenth of the praise it gets.
The Dark Knight (2008)
Not even the best movie of 2008.
To start, I would like to say that this movie is not even as good as Batman Begins. Christian Bale is one of my favorite actors, Batman is one of the best super heroes, but that still does not mean this equates to The Shawshank Redemption or The Godfather.
This is a very good movie, but it is not deserving of all of the hype surrounding it. Health Ledger's death had more of an impact on this movie's critical acclaim than anything in the actual movie. The Joker is pretty cool because the screen writers made him cool, not because Health Ledger delivered an Oscar worthy performance or any of that other BS. People seem to forget that Liam Neeson played his character in Begins at least as well if not better than Heath Ledger played The Joker. Also, Christian Bale is predominately playing his snobby Bruce Wayne character in this film, which is quite annoying. After seeing the movie, you might even realize that Christian Bale's obscure placement throughout the film is a major flaw.
The Godfather is around 3 hours, this is around 2&1/2 hours, yet this movie feels much slower. Rather than keeping a steady pace, the movie seems to doze off for a while followed by huge explosions and overly drawn out 30 minute action sequences. It's ridiculous.
The best movie of 2008 is In Bruges, not TDK.
The Matrix (1999)
The Matrix is pretty good, but overrated.
This is a very good movie. Visually, The Matrix is pretty much at the top of the Sci-Fi genre. The plot is solid, Keanu Reeves doesn't suck, and it's a unique film.
But, why is it overrated? Just because I said the acting doesn't suck does not mean that it's particularly good. This movie is good, but it's certainly not in the top 100 films of all time. There are much better movies out there that rely on clever story telling, have better actors, and there are some with equally as cool visuals. If you know what to look for, the plot is pretty predictable. All of the foreshadowing in this movie insults your intelligence rather than adding to the tension. Also, the slow motion sequences become stupid after watching the movie a couple of times, and they are in an abundance.
I used to be a fan of this movie, but once I saw Dark City I realized how much room for improvement there truly was.
