Submarines (2003)
Worst than it seems
I had to give one star to the movie, because there is no option to give zero stars. Maybe that one star could be given because of... I can't think of something. Maybe the acting is good, but that is almost impossible to tell, because most of the characters seem to be schizophrenics, which can turn form coward to hero even in the same dialog (don't believe me? Watch the movie.) The especial effects are so lame, that they kept repeating the same scene on and on (sorry, I didn't count the times I saw the open casket of the submarines). I wasn't sure what made a movie to be bad, but I've got to thank this movie for having it clear now: A bad movie is that one where you laugh at the "serious" parts, and you get pi++ed off by the "funny" parts. At least, that's what I learned from this one.
O Homem Que Desafiou o Diabo (2007)
Interesting, beautiful and hilarious
I liked a lot this movie, because it shows a face of Brazil that doesn't have to do with samba, carnival, or favelas. It's about the northeastern culture, music and myths, which have almost nothing to do with the rest of the country (except for the language, and even that changes a lot). This movie has great landscapes, the photography is gorgeous, and has that sort of "magical realism" that was very celebrated during the 60's, 70's in Latinamerican literature. Is a great way to remember that once in America (and until now in some parts), magic and reality are the main ingredients of life itself. Great movie, great trip, that leaves you with great feelings, and of course, the anxiety to see those lands by oneself.
Tropa de Elite (2007)
Deep and relentless
It's a movie that hits you as hard as the special forces that appear in it.
It makes no concessions, it gives no shelter.
One of its merits is that there are no good or bad guys, characters are just humans. Which have good and bad sides.
The "good" guy has a family, and is struggling to make a better world for them. The "bad" guy also has a family, and struggles to make a better world for them. Both use weapons, both are merciless, both know winning means nothing and loosing means death.
It is a movie that lets you make your own conclusions, it isn't didactic, it just presents reality, as raw as it is.
Does fear justifies violence? Does order justify violence? ¿Does survival justifies violence? Does life justifies violence? Watch the movie and movie and make your own conclusions, I loved everything, the characters, the acting, the locations, the effects, it really makes you feel and almost touch the social problem of drugs in Rio de Janeiro (the world?). and reminds you of one very important thing: What justifies a human for killing a human?
Marco Polo (2007)
Yes, cheesy and predictable
It obviously isn't a historical movie, nor a movie that should be taken as "educational" material either. It's just a plain fiction on Marco Polo, a very free adaptation of his travels, the four points are for locations and sightings. Yes, the acting is really bad, some characters era annoyingly out of character, (sorry for the repetition). Though, I think the costume and production is very good, alas, the script is not. Even though, if you want to see a cheesy history of a guy that can make his way into a society by accepting the system in a supposedly "rebel" way, definitely, you'd like to see this one, it's message is simple "obedience pays".
