one of the great masterpieces of world cinema
2 June 2003
essential viewing (and listening)...the newly-restored Munich Film Archives dvd of this film is simply wonderful. the G. Huppertz score is a marvel (lovingly restored by Erich Heller making use of the widow's piano score). Kurosawa's tribute to this classic can be seen in his handling of the "siege of the third fire tower" in RAN)...and, of course, Kriemhild's vindictive widow was the model for the Wicked Witch in SNOW WHITE... a landmark of international cinema: not to be missed.

a masterpiece of the "silent screen"

Without question, the finest version of this classic "tearjerker". Belle Bennett will break your heart. The finale (watching the wedding in the rain) is an epiphany comparable to the end of IKIRU... This is a work that should--no, must--be made available for film lovers around the world.

a stunning accomplishment

one of the greatest French films of the last few decades yet, sadly, a film almost entirely overlooked by most critics...including the Lelouch-bashers of the contemporary French film industry.

make no mistake: most of those who have seen it--certainly everyone I know who has seen it--tend to regard it as a genuine classic of world cinema and the finest film of the year of its release.

powerful, skillful and impassioned, I can recommend it without reservation.

a triumph for all concerned.

Really good...

A subtler film than THE GRADUATE but one that will certainly connect with the same demographic. With excellent performances, fine writing and quality direction, the film has a sly, satirical quality that are most appealing. That said, the film may prove too sophisticated for some audiences but this will only further endear it to the audience of choice. Don't miss this one...has "breakaway hit" written all over it...

A masterpiece...

Simply one of the greatest films ever made. Worthy of sitting alongside such European masterworks as THE RULES OF THE GAME, GRAND ILLUSION, NOSTALGHIA, ANDREI ROUBLEV, 8 1/2, WINGS OF DESIRE, VIRIDIANA, THE NIGHT OF THE SHOOTING STARS, LA STRADA, ORDET,THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, THE FOUR HUNDRED BLOWS and MADAME DE... Both a blessing...and an almost perfect work of art.

A masterpiece.

Remarkable...one of the greatest films of the last 50 years and easily one of the most underrated. Commitment and heart, Victor Hugo and the Normandy Invasion on a budget of under 10 million? Hollywood should learn from this...
