Strike Zone (2003)
Tribute to Cameron Duncan
The bracketed part is to be a short poem as the lines r breaking up here
(With tears I bid u farewell for u will not be amongst us, With joy I bid farewell as u will be free of pain u were going through; Merry journey to the West my friend, Where u will await to meet us; Serene beauty may surround thou there; Watch over from there, don't despair; For through His Highness we shall look after what u left behind, Pray for us to the Holy Lord; That we gather the strength u possessed, As a clock named time passes by.)
I just couldn't resist writing this some sort of poem. I beg my pardon to each and every people whose mother tongue is English to dare to write a poem in their mother tongue although I literally know nothing about English language and it's cultural heritage. I haven't even finished the books Lord of The Rings (JRR Tolkien) and Treasure Island (RL Stevenson) because of my slow and stumbled reading. I hope to read more English though. I just don't know why I had to write this short poem or whatever, but that's why I did as I felt it to be the realistic impression of my feelings to this great young film prodigy.
Chitra Nodir Pare (1999)
Good promising start, but didn't live up to the expectation in the end
As I said in the title, it started really well. It was also going along nicely in the middle period but faltered then.
An elderly Hindu lawyer, portrayed by famous Momtajuddin Ahmed, refused to go to India leaving his forefather's property in the then Islamic Republic of Pakistan. He sent his boy to India according to that boy's will, but her daughter stayed with his father and aunt near their favorite river, 'Chitra'. This river seemed to play a central part for their staying in Muslim-majority Pakistan. There were some shots involving the river, like the bathing scene of two girls, the death scene of the father etc, but I think they lacked the dramatic charm to be honest. I expected more passionate music in those scenes.
The secret love between Minu, a Hindu girl and Badal, a Muslim Boy could have been a better dramatic plot. It reached a rather anti-climax end where Badal was shot dead in Dhaka. This shooting scene also lacked dramatic and appealing suspense.
And surprisingly, when they left their homeland following the riot and the death of the lawyer, Minu (Afsana Mimi) didn't even say goodbye to her beloved river 'Chitra'. It was really disappointing. As the movie is named 'Chitra Nadir Pare' (Quiet flows the river Chitra), I was banking on to see the river playing a bit more central role in the country-leaving scene.
Everyone acted well, good choice of actors from Tanvir Mokammel made it a well-acted cinema. The introduction of the mad man throwing dialogues about whether the passers-by are coming or going was an apt thinking by the director in a movie about migration.
Afsana Mimi was looking graceful in this movie, specially in the rain-drenching scene on the rooftop. One has to give credit to the director for master-piecing a scene like that.
Overall just may be OK, but really could have been far far better. 6/10 from me.
Aparajito (1956)
Not Satisfactory
I had high hopes from one of my favorite directors about this movie. Not only because this is one of the most beautifully, poetically narrated novel of the history of Bengali literature, but also of the reason that this is my personal favorite, 'Aporajito' that is from Great novelist Bhibhutibhushan. But my favorite director let me down big time.
In this movie, he built an 'Apu'which differs significantly from the original novel. In the novel, Apu is a keen student of mainly literature, wandering about and reading poetry from 'The Golden Treasury' in the school-yard. On the contrary, in the movie he is a keen student of science studying 1/u + 1/v = 1/f. I didn't like this this thing at all. Because in the later part of his life, he became a 'poet come novelist'. How can he become a 'poet come novelist' without a single reference to his liking for poetry in the whole movie? Satyajit focused on the relation between Apu and his 'a bit old fashioned' mother in a strange way. In the movie, it seems that Apu has simply stopped to pay any kind of attention to his mother which is also contrary to the original novel. Yes, he had a bit of a fight with his mother about studying in the school. His old fashioned mother didn't see the necessity of reading in a school while they are getting enough to live their life from Apu's career as a Hindu priest. But Apu badly wanted to read in a school which will give him knowledge about the outside world. At last Apu won, he did go to read in the school, but there was no lacking in love and respect for his mother in his life. He always felt his mother in the school (according to the novel), read out interesting stories to his mother when he was home from school. Overall he intended to share the joy of gathering knowledge with his poor mother who worked so hard to establish Apu. But Satyajit completely ignored these feelings on the basis of a paragraph from the novel that said Apu was relieved when his mother died. This isn't the way of portraying that paragraph. It merely reflected Apu's mind which was free as a flying bird. Now that his mother has passed away, he would be able to roam wherever he may like without any bond of family, which was a mixed feelings of slight relief and deep sorrow for the huge loss of losing his mom.
The character 'Apu' is like a myth in Bengali literature, comprises of sweetness of dream rather than bitterness of harsh reality. He gave hope back to me which I lost in the earlier part of my life. He is an icon not only to me, but also to a lot of young people of Bengal like me. Satyajit, with due respect to the great man, failed to portray this mythical 'Apu'. He portrayed his own Apu. He is entitled to his opinion, but I didn't like his rendition of Apu. I hope that a better rendition of Apu will be made in near future, which will have similarity with Bhibhutibhusan's Apu.
Ocean's Twelve (2004)
Not a traditional caper movie, but that doesn't make it bad.
When I watched this movie first,I also hated it like all others. But when I saw it second time, it started to make some real sense to me. I really admired it.
It's a fine rendition according to the term sequel. In the first part, they just stole the casino money from Benedict. What would you like to see in the sequel actually? Of course not another famous heist by Ocean gang, because that would've been a cliché. Instead, we would like to see how arrogant Benedict reacts at Ocean gang. And when he got the chance through Night Fox,he reacted even to the surprise of Night Fox. That suited really good for a sequel.
People are complaining about the camera angle and long shots. But it didn't bother me at all. The long shot taken in the Matsui scene perfectly presented Linus's(Matt Damon)helplessness in front of Matsui's code language. He is the same man to play super CIA agent Bourne who looked very confident and desperate in Bourne's trilogy. But here in this shot, his rendition of helpless young ambitious gang member just stated his versatility boldly. The long take in Rusty's room with he and Ocean drinking and watching TV was also great to show off their frustration.
Livingstone was referring to Yen as modern man who is disconnected, frightened and so on in a way that he was mocking the memorizing of literary Q/A for exam. This idea really uplifted the class of the movie much more than Schumann's special did to the building. That was really innovative, experimental and funny.
The movie had great acting support from every cast member, there was great background music as well. I mean, really, how can you hate a movie with such good background music? The finishing was also very good 'twist in the tail' sort.
This movie is a bit different from Hollywood mainstream. It had it's own style which included behavioral,gesture-rich acting with which we weren't quite accustomed to. But that's our problem,I guess, not the director's fault. When I first read T.S.Eliot,I dumped the book loud on the floor. Does that make Eliot rubbish?
Don't try to watch it with previous determination of watching a traditional caper movie, watch it with a free mind. I think you will get the tone of the movie like I did in the second attempt.
300 (2006)
A good video game, not a good movie.
What is it actually? A video game? Cuz that's what it was looking like. What is really going on with the voters and their taste, I don't know, they r not liking 'The Majestic' from Darabont,'True Crime' from Eastwood, but they all like this movie nevertheless. What can I say? What was the point of making Xerxes wearing an ornamented underwear? To make fun of Xerxes? Well, to tell u the truth, I'm not a huge fan of Xerxes, but that's just mean. No king can wear this kind of garment. And the valor was absent. In stead there was violent attitude from the Spartans. I know when foreigners attack, home people can't be happy, but it's up to the director to make graceful valor out of violent defending of their own state on his own creativity. Like 'The Two Towers', we saw heroic expressions from the actors and graceful gestures from actresses. But here, apart from the queen, no one can be put in that category, sorry.Everyone was rude, ferocious and clumsy. There attacks, yells everything. Even the music was gruesome and poor. U certainly can see the movie to realize that there are better movies than this one in this world, otherwise no need. Better than 'Dawn of the Dead', nothing else.
