The Lodge (2019)
Psychological Horror, just not scary
Trigger Warning: Suicide
First, never has a full cast death ever been so desired.
Dad leaves wife for a younger woman (Grace).
Mom offs herself because she can't handle it and decides sticking around for her kids doesn't matter.
Dad leaves kids with Grace for Christmas at their cabin 6 hours away and gives her the password to the gun.
Grace has childhood religious trauma from her dad being a suicide cult leader but has pills to help regulate herself.
Kids research this info and draw up an elaborate plan to get Grace to kill herself by making her think she's stuck in pergatory.
The son is a nasty little pervert who likes to peep on Grace in the shower.
Daughter kills Grace's dog.
Kids hide her pills and all of the stuff in the house to convince her it's pergatory.
Grace has a psychotic break. Prays. Repents. Violent penance.
The world is a better place without the kids. Trust.
Gaia (2021)
Not a horror story but not bad
If you wanted an alternative start to The Last of Us, this would be it.
Clickers, fungus that spreads to humans and takes them over, and a bizarre story that's underneath it all. Not a bad movie, no scary points but has some suspenseful moments. You can tell it's not a high budget film but it does a good job with what it has. Not really any major loopholes that get in the way of the story making sense and I think that's one of the better parts about it being so simply done.
You have questions. They have answers.
I'd definitely say it's worth a watch when you've got the time to spend. Mysterious, not scary.
The Offering (2022)
Potential missed
The best thing that can happen in a horror movie is doing all of the right things and still coming up short. But when the main character doesn't listen repeatedly it's like watching a toddler with no attention span follow (but actually not) instructions. Painful throughout, the supporting characters were written better than the two main characters.
No common sense.
The best part of this movie is the lore. Demons, religion, missteps, it has everything that could be used to make a good movie but the writing just is NOT up to scratch.
By the end I was thankful that everyone died because it was a relief that they weren't involved in the situation anymore.
No One Will Save You (2023)
Interesting take on aliens, albeit strange.
The entire movie has a single line of dialogue which doesn't really take away from the experience itself, but it's delivered in a way that was less impactful than it could have been.
Brynn has an anxiety disorder, or something similar, and shows it well in the way it's protrayed.
The aliens have interesting vocals and movement, they keep you on the edge of your seat as things progress through the movie.
The real question to the movie isnt, "what are the aliens trying to do?" but "how is this girl not in jail?"
You'll find out why as you make your way through it, but the character's mental instability really cracks and you can kind of see how she went off the deep end early on in life.
Shookum Hills (2021)
They may as well have been farmers for how corny this was
Idea was solid.
Execution was poor.
Ending was expected and irrational.
In a movie based loosely around theological demons and how people in the modern world in eastern Kentucky would handle it... it was rough.
Characters were corny.
Decisive moments were corny.
Writing was corny.
Don't know if it was the actors or the director more at fault for the delivery of lines, but they felt like they were being recited and not performed.
The "security specialist" was useless, the guide did better at security and surveillance.
They had their cliche religious person who believed they were going to find an entrance to hell and the opposing character to call them ridiculous.
The "professor" was a poor leader and over emotional some moments and totally apathetic in others.
Save yourself some time. Watch something else.
Lullaby (2022)
Could be been better, would have been hard to be worse.
Crying baby for 3/4.
Reaction times so slow to the point of total neglect. Poor writing under the guise of plot twists.
Being contradicting for the sake of conflict doesn't make for entertainment.
I wanted to stop watching about 50 minutes in but rode it out so I could see if it redeemed itself by the end.
Spoiler alter. It didn't.
Honestly I don't understand what the standards are for film writers these days, they must know someone in film in order to get these jobs because it's definitely not from talent.
Don't recommend watching it.
The best part of the movie was the song in the credits.
