The Aviator (2004)
8/10
Very Worthwhile Movie
4 January 2005
I mostly disagree with Peter-991's review of this movie. The Aviator was very good and well-acted and I do not think Leonardo DiCaprio was miscast at all; on the contrary, I thought he gave one of his best performances and may very well be on his way to an Academy Award for Best Actor. Howard Hughes is a complex and enigmatic character who must have been exceedingly difficult to portray. And one must remember that this film covers the early years of his life, so if the resemblance to Hughes doesn't kick in until the Senate hearings (with the mustache, etc...) then perhaps that's why. Also, the scene at the beginning with is mother was gross but very necessary to the plot. This shows the very foundation for his mental illness and the way she warped his mind against illness and germs through her dialog with him. I agree that Cate Blanchett was very effective as Katharine Hepburn and probably also deserves a Best Supporting Actress nod. However, I felt that Alan Alda, while good in the role, was simply being Hawkeye as an old man. I would recommend this movie as a very compelling look at a man who was brilliant yet also had some very heavy issues in his life.

Hope & Faith (2003–2006)
Great Show, Poor Casting
9 December 2004
I love this show, largely due to Faith Ford and Kelly Ripa. I really like both of them and they have super chemistry together. I also really like Ted McGinley as Hope's husband, and I usually laugh out load at his silly lines. However - the real problem lies within the "kids" on the show. And I use the term loosely because the new Sydney must be 25 or 26 years old - c'mon casting people, where are your eyeballs and brains?? There is no way Faith Ford could biologically be this woman's mother, unless she was supposed to have had her illegitimately in junior high school. The original Sydney was perfectly cast. In my opinion, they should have only cast two kids, both girls, to reflect the personalities of Hope and Faith, as younger versions of themselves. The original Sydney should mirror Faith Fairfield, and the younger Haley should mirror her sensible mom, Hope. Justin, the son, is becoming an over-the-top caricature of himself; no little kid talks like that. They really dropped the ball when they cast the kids and CHANGED Sydneys in season two. But overall it's a great sitcom due to the two stars of the show.

Classic Doris, But Slightly Miscast
10 August 2004
I actually do like this movie, because I'm a huge fan of Doris Day and anything she's ever starred in. However, the only contrary thing I can say about this movie is that I feel that David Niven was miscast as her husband... he's simply too old for her! Keeping in mind that he was supposed to be her college professor at one time, I guess it can be somewhat rationalized, but still! Niven's character is having some sort of cranky mid-life crisis, and he gets great fulfillment from living in NYC and enjoying his newfound celebrity as a play critic. Doris, however, wants to move to the suburbs and have a full-time husband for her four young sons... someone who is happy to stay around the house and volunteer at the local elementary school. How these two mis-matched people can forge a marriage out of such differences is beyond me. That aside, the acting is great and the story line is engaging. If you like '60s comedies, and good wholesome entertainment, this movie is highly recommended... Doris Day is great!

A Doris Day Classic
26 April 2004
I LOVE this movie. It's super kitschy, especially the '60s opening graphics, and the plot is really fun. Doris Day was at her most beautiful during this time period... the fashions she wears in this film are really stunning, and even the most casual outfits are classics. The "sexist" plot does annoy me a little - and I'm over 40 - but it's pretty typical Carl Reiner fare from this era. As most may recall, he was the force behind the Dick Van Dyke Show, which also reflected this attitude between Rob & Laura. As "hip" and sexy a couple as they were, Rob still didn't want Laura to work outside the home. I wish James Garner (as Dr. Boyer) could have relaxed and enjoyed his wife's career success a little... who wouldn't want more money?? But I suppose his resistance was crucial to the storyline here. Other than these minor points, this movie remains really good entertainment, well acted and with wonderful chemistry between Garner and Miss Day. Highly recommended!

One of the Best Doris Day Movies of All
30 March 2004
I absolutely love this movie. People have commented that Doris Day's later movies were not as good as the ones from the early '60s, but I disagree. The storyline here is very engaging, and the characters are superb. I totally lose myself in this movie when I watch it, and I laugh out loud every time. It is fun to follow the timeline of the movie... if you analyze it the entire thing takes place over about 5 months. It begins in June (with Flip and Stacey's graduation), and ends around Halloween (hence the brief appearnces of the Halloween masks). The supporting cast is terrific too, some great old faces that everyone will recognize. If you love the classic comedies of Doris Day, I heartily recommend this one.

Great Classic Kitsch
25 March 2003
If you love the lighthearted, romantic comedies of the 1960s, then you'll consider this one of the all time classics. In the same genre as the wonderful Doris Day movies of the same era, this will provide fun, wholesome viewing. A must-have for movie collectors of this time period!
