The Woman King (2022)
Love it so much
I love this movie so much. Viola Davis deserves an Oscar for this. She was amazing, powerful, inspiring and awesome to watch. I got goosebump every time they fought. I could feel the feral anger at the oppressors and the sisterhood of the women. The portrayal of the pain and steel resolve of Nanisca, the growth of Nawi and the camaraderie of Izogie and Amenza was so well- placed in the show. The women have weaknesses but they make them stronger. The men took a backseat in this movie and gave the women such powerful roles in the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it and we really need more girl power movies like this.
A Tourist's Guide to Love (2023)
Like a sponsored ad by Tourism Vietnam
Typical predictable rom-com except the leads were not charismatic nor lovable enough. Also the whole film feels like a sponsored ad by Tourism board of Vietnam, cheesy and quite forced insertions of Vietnamese tourism spots into the movie. Story felt like it was written to fit in the different tourist attractions the tourism board wants. Everything feels very contrived like the tour group programs. Pace of movie was too slow and conversations and dialogue felt stifled. Like watching a very long advertisement that you cannot skip. Don' get me wrong, some of the scenery was really beautiful but it wasn't enough to save the movie.
Harry & Meghan (2022)
Unimpressive and Biased
I was disappointed. The documentary felt more like a one-sided promotion of Harry and Meghan's image than a balanced exploration of their lives.
The documentary lacked any real insight into the couple's experiences, and instead relied heavily on anecdotal evidence and hearsay. There was little effort made to delve into the complex issues surrounding their departure from the royal family, and instead, the narrative seemed to be heavily influenced by Harry and Meghan's perspective.
Moreover, the documentary failed to provide any real depth or analysis, and instead felt more like a collection of talking heads offering their own opinions. The lack of diversity in the perspectives presented was particularly disappointing.
Overall, I would not recommend the Harry & Meghan Netflix documentary to anyone looking for an unbiased and thoughtful exploration of the couple's lives. Instead, it feels like little more than a shallow attempt to burnish their public image.
Archetypes (2022)
Self-Centered and Uninspired: Archetypes Podcast Misses the Mark
I recently gave Meghan Markle's Archetypes podcast a listen, and to say that I was disappointed would be an understatement. The show felt more like a platform for Meghan to talk about herself rather than a discussion with the guests. It was just a roundabout way to bring everything back to her.
Meghan's constant references to her own experiences and struggles felt self-centered and uninspired. It seemed like she was more interested in promoting her own personal brand.
Additionally, the conversations lacked any real depth or substance. The guests on the show were unremarkable and failed to bring anything interesting to the table. In the end, I found myself tuning out more often than not, as the show simply failed to hold my attention.
Overall, I would not recommend Meghan Markle's Archetypes podcast to anyone looking for a thoughtful and engaging exploration of "archetypes" of women / identity / culture etc. Instead, it feels like little more than an opportunity for Meghan to talk about herself.
