Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)
Strong 6 weak 7 so 6.5/10
It's just one of those big budget movies that you go in for pure enjoyment and are just brainless fun with no specific story to be told but lore to figure out and have in mind when it comes to the kaijus, monsters and the world excluding the humans from it.
I don't mind the amount of human interaction that was there but the movie could've done with even less more and human interaction since the story was too straightforward to be told by humans and very understandable to be told throughout the kaijus and the world itself.
Visually the movie was great and very pleasing to the eyes and the CGI was great with no specific mistakes to remember. I prefer Godzilla vs. Kong over this one because the whole idea and story was more intriguing.
It deserves a watch on the big screen.
The Equalizer 3 (2023)
The worst of the trilogy.
I never obsessed over The Equalizer films, I always thought they were decent action movies but I really liked the first one, it was great. I always preferred the john wick franchise over it.
This one was not necessarily bad, it was alright but it feels off for some reason and it felt kinda boring, a lot of elements were missing from the previous ones such as the iconic scanning and going into Robert's head and the time counting.
This one also felt long as it didn't feel like a three act film but a film with just one long act that takes the span of 2 hours.
The story was kinda decent and the fight scenes were still great but I wanted to see more, the only thing that held this film apart was the scenes with Denzel, I legit didn't care about the side characters and other stuff.
I still recommend watching it though.
Talk to Me (2022)
One of the best if not the best for sure.
I can easily say that this is one of the best horror film experiences I've had in a long time or even ever, I was very satisfied as the credits rolled at the end.
Most horror genre films these days lack character building and making them relatable and down to earth for the viewers and rely on very cheap and cliché jumpscares that get old really quick, this film does the opposite of everything I've mentioned, for once, the characters actually feel real, you can sympathize with their struggles and all actors have done a very great job of conveying that especially Mia which was played by Sophie Wilde.
Sound design and audio effects was masterfully used in this film as it was specifically made to be watched in a cinema.
The ending was dark and very satisfying, I was happy with it.
Before going into this film, I saw the high ratings and good reviews it received but I was kinda skeptical about liking it because the same thing happened with the black phone and I ended up not liking it, but with this one it's 100% to watch it especially on the big screen.
This was my first time not looking up who the director was for this film before watching it and I only realized that the directors were Michael and Danny from RackaRacka, I grew up watching their skits and funny videos and I was even more satisfied seeing them make their first official horror film on the big screen.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Deserves it.
I couldn't write this review upon watching the film immediately because my brain still didn't recover from the experience I've had with it.
I was really excited and so were everyone else before it was released, Christopher Nolan as director, the trailers, images and everything in production related to the film was huge and especially the casting members.
I've never had a feeling in the cinema like the one I had after the ending hit and the credits rolled since maybe the Joker back in 2019, emotions were everywhere.
This film tackles the story of one of the most important events in our history and the person behind all of it "J. Robert Oppenheimer", the father of the atomic bomb.
It's a 3 hour journey full of non-stop and engaging dialogue that'll keep you focused and wondering in some of it trying to decipher what it means, a lot of figures of history and character names are mentioned and the interactions and relationships between them unfold.
Cillian Murphy fully deserves the oscar award for best lead actor 100%, especially when it comes to the emotions in his eyes, you can clearly distinguish between different emotions in his face just by the face and eye shots that Christopher Nolan likes to do.
The soundtrack and music are definitely second main protagonist after Cillian Murphy, they were some of the best I've heard in years, the way they blend in with the scenes creating astonishing scenes that give unimaginable feelings and goosebumps, It definitely carried the film in many times.
The direction choices and editing in most of the scenes are out of this world and amazing.
The rest of the cast were really amazing and it's hard to list each and everyone of them as they are a lot, but they were all up to par and amazing.
Experiencing this on the biggest IMAX screen with a 7 star service made it 100 times better.
If you ever had any doubt about what cinema is and what it could be, this film is it.
I've never rated a film a 10 before because no piece of entertainment can be perfect, but I'll be honored to give my first one to Oppenheimer as I've seen nothing that would make this film experience less than that, and if there were any it's VERY VERY minor.
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
Tom Cruise is crazy
Where to begin with this review, the mission impossible franchise is one of the best and craziest out there that spanned over the last 27 years and is still going strong.
Getting excited and having high expectations before watching a 7th installment film in a franchise says everything, although tom cruise in his 60s, he still delivers a very quality and fun action film with breathtaking stunts as he always does.
I liked how they approach the story of the film by using "something" that is currently being talked about and used in real life so we could relate.
All the characters were very great and fun including the new addition of the character grace played by Hayley Atwell, the chemistry between her and Tom Cruise was well done.
The addition of comedy in some scenes with Tom Cruise was very well put and actually made me crack a smile
My issues are very minor, I would've liked more screen time with benji and luther and 2 hours and 45 minutes almost is a bit dragged out but don't get me wrong, it's still very fun to watch and you won't feel the time passing.
Everything you'd expect from a mission impossible film is in this one as well.
I am even more excited as to how this part sets up the continuing part next year.
The Flash (2023)
Finally an excellent DC film
I am writing this review almost 2 weeks after I've watched the film.
Going into it I had very low expectations looking back at MOST of the films that came out from both marvel. (It shows because I also didn't watch it when it first screened.)
It tackles the story of flashpoint, one of the greatest flash comic stories out there so if you know you know.
The film was actually decent and well put together, it was very fun all the way through and I was surprised.
Whenever I used to remember flash, a picture of Grant Gustin used to pop in my head but now after the show went into a downfall and seeing a more in depth flash film starring Ezra Miller, he is him.
Comedy was perfectly balanced in almost all of the film except some minor sections, the CGI was kinda good and passable since everytime there was a bad CGI moment, we get compensated with an amazing scene almost immediately after.
Ezra Miller's Acting was really great, mixing between the comedy and the heavy drama was exceptional.
This film really does well when it comes to fan servicing, seeing Michael Keaton as batman once again is really amazing with the small bits of easter eggs and references to iconic lines, it doesn't just fan service the people in that regards but it's way that is more broader revolving around the DC universes and projects that were either processed or were cancelled.
If you're familiar with that kind of knowledge and information, you'll really enjoy it in that regards.
Since I watched it a while ago, there might be some stuff that I skipped or just forgot to mention because no notes were prepared and written since that time.
It had the perfect ending to set up for whatever James Gunn has prepared for us.
Insidious: The Red Door (2023)
a forced entry.
I am writing this review a week after I've watched the film and to be honest, I barely remember anything showing how forgettable the insidious movies started getting since the last key.
This franchise started its downfall and it was expected, they started getting less "horrory" with the boring so called suspenseful buildups and expected jumpscares, all were very cliché.
I almost never cared about the characters and the story (not in all movies but in general), and this one doesn't do anything new in fact, it's worse than previous entries.
I didn't like the acting of any of the characters that much as it didn't stick out THAT much.
They should stop milking this franchise but I just know they won't but you know what, I'm still here for the ride lmao.
Extraction 2 (2023)
The first hour was the peakest
I am writing this review now having watched the movie a while ago.
Chris Hemsworth once again proves that he is an elite actor when it comes to hand to hand combat mixed with a high adrenaline of action.
The first hour of the movie was very engaging and intense with how amazing the long shots were directed and filmed mixed with the flawless choreography and stunts.
The plot and the characters in general didn't stick that much with me and they were kinda forgettable, villain was below average as well. (I know some people hate the kid for being annoying but I don't because he acted like one).
In general, I liked the action in the second movie more but I preferred the story and setting of the first one.
Sisu (2022)
Worse than I expected.
I was excited before going into this movie knowing barely anything about it except the title of it that I only heard of. Reviews and ratings were looking good which made me even more excited up until the moment I watched it.
This movie is full of cons so I'll start off with pros quickly, the setting is very good, a Rambo, john wick type character that is almost invulnerable and kills everyone he encounters in a world war II setting against the Nazis, amazing, some sceneries looked very good as well, very brutal in some scenes and the gore was good, that's about it.
This movie lacked in every other department a movie should have to be classified as good, the story was simple but I get it, stories in these types of movies I don't judge harshly so I'll give it a pass it was alright.
There was literally no characters, personality, emotions with all of the actors and characters except Jorma Tommila and his badass character and most importantly no good exposition when it comes to the main character. We know so little about him and when they try to explain, it's done in the most poor way possible and we never actually learn.
I wouldn't dare to call whatever a conversation between two characters a dialogue, it was SO non existent it's actually disrespectful to the film industry and cinema, it was like written by a 5 year old.
For a 6 mil budget, CGI was alright in most of the movie but noticeably bad in some scenes but it's passable.
I enjoy over the top and exaggerated action in these types of movies but ONLY when it's done right, I see people defending this movie by saying "Movies aren't realistic so what did you expect ?", Yes I agree but I can only handle it to an extent if every other aspect of a movie was completely trash.
This movie is not good, it was a bit fun but definitely a great time waster.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
It isn't as good as people make it to be.
It took me a while to get into this movie for no specific reason, but now after I've seen it, it was exactly as I expected it to be which is just mindless and somewhat of a fun experience to an extent.
Since DnD is a very cultural and mostly american 80s thing, It is very important to note that I wasn't born and raised in the place nor the time where this board game was taking over the world creating a massive fan base around it which makes me unfamiliar with mechanics of the game, the lore of the world it's in and anything that relates to it other than the obvious of course.
My problem with this movie is it expected everyone to relate and know everything about the world before jumping in, I am pretty sure most of the fans of the DnD universe were satisficed with this movie according to most of the reviews and ratings
For me it really lacked when it comes to characters and trying to connect emotionally with them and the world building which is the most important factor in a movie of this scale and background culture considering there would be many people that aren't obsessed with that world.
A lot of things happened in the movie that didn't make sense whether it was something relating to characters and story or it was something completely dumb and it wasn't supposed to happen the way it did.
Most of the cast even were alright with Chris Pine being alright as well.
I'll give the movie credits where credit is due, some comedic parts were actually funny and made me laugh.
In the end this movie still translates to a fun experience a bit, but it's just brainless and that's an issue because it shouldn't be just "mindless".
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
One of the best game to movie adaptions ever.
This movie delivers exactly what you'd expect and even more from a full on super mario brothers movie.
I was really intrigued when this movie was announced back then as to how they would create and build an engaging narrative and world around the super Mario brothers game that is suitable for both the viewers and gamers and they did it exceptionally well taking into consideration how minor and small the plot actual plot and lore of the whole game.
What it also does well is fan servicing the gamers by doing small nods to different genres and games in the world of super Mario like Mario kart, Luige's mansion etc.
Voice casting for all characters was great especially Jack Black as Bowser and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong
The only thing that I was a bit confused about is the unnecessary change in plot regarding princess peach and Luige as they made the captive of this movie is Luige instead of the princess for some reason.
Animation was phenomenal and all in all the movie was a lot of fun it this is how it should be taken and received.
Air (2023)
An Icon
Michael Jordan is one of the greatest athletes of all time and the best basketball player to ever walk to the earth and everyone already knows this
a lot of media entertainment mediums shared bits and pieces of the stories of Michael Jordan and showcased how he rose from being a young 18 year old kid who loved to play basketball to being the greatest at it.
This movie does it as well in a very entertaining and engaging way and specifically talking about the sportsman partnership the changed everything, Nike x Michael Jordan and how Nike created the Air Jordan's, a pair of shoes that was based on him, even though it wasn't a very good move and had minor consequences on the company.
What excited me for this movie was the ensemble of amazing cast which included Ben Affleck both as an actor and director.
Everyone delivered amazingly especially Matt Damon and Viola Davis.
I really enjoyed seeing Chris Tucker as well.
Not a lot to say when it comes to this movie as the story material is already known, this movie could've ended up being boring and bad
but it was hella fun.
The Covenant (2023)
This movie feels like a full on call of duty modern warfare campaign
This movie really shows the small touches of Guy Ritchie as a director as he does it again with one of his best movies up until now.
It was very engaging and suspenseful from beginning to end with a really fun and touching bonding story between the characters of Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim.
The highlight for ME in this movie acting-wise was Dar Salim and his character of the interpreter Ahmed, he created a very badass character that will be remembered ahead. The rest of the characters and actors were quite good but I was a bit disappointed by how little screen time both big actors like Antony Starr and Alexander Ludwig got.
Jake Gyllenhaal is an amazing actor and is definitely one of the most underrated, slipping under many people's radar but, it might just be me, I just didn't feel he was fit for the role and I can't explain why as it is not about the acting level, he just doesn't fit in military/war roles.
More action war movies should be made like this, taking place in fairly modern war tragedies instead of a WW1/WW2 setting which we got used to and seen a lot.
Amazing.
Evil Dead Rise (2023)
The embodiment of a nightmare
I think the evil dead franchise is okay and I somewhat like it and it has its moments but it's not my favorite.
This movie in specific feels like what a nightmare would actually look like if it was visualized for us to see and that's a good thing, very brutal and gory with a lot of outlandish stuff happening that is stressful.
First act was good and engaging, the second was boring and the final act was kinda good as well.
Even though I typically don't judge dialogue or acting when it comes to horror movies but to me, this movie was carried by Alyssa Sutherland, the makeup and acting were very great and I enjoyed it every time she was there and not so much for the rest of the boring, reaction lacking and below average characters and their actors as they're mostly young and new to the acting scene (Lily Sullivan is a bit of an exception even though her character was still not that much).
The whole story was based on a stupid coincidence which made all this mess and I didn't like it.
This movie could've been much better but in the end, they're horror movies which translated to brainless fun.
Not even the best horror movie in this type of genre would get over a 7.5 so giving this movie a solid 6 is very fair in my opinion.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
"I love you guys"
God damn what a comeback from marvel and the mcu.
I cannot believe I am saying this but, finally in the last few years, I actually enjoyed a mcu movie since "Avengers: Endgame (2019)" with a few exceptions in between like "Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)". Most of the movies and tv shows released in between were terrible, lacking stories and characters and were all around boring and bad.
James Gunn successfully ends the guardians of the galaxy trilogy and his journey with marvel with a gem of a movie like an icing on the cake.
This movie really brought back the original vibe and charm of the marvel movies back in the first phases without any garbage whatsoever to fit whatsoever (up to you to interpret what that means). It was coherent with the narrative and everything actually made sense.
Marvel usually overdoses in throwing in jokes and comedy whenever they can and it misses most of the time but with this movie, 95% of the jokes were hitting and I was actually cracking a smile during them even though I usually don't especially with the character of Drax. The other 5% were the Mantis jokes which FOR ME, weren't hitting MOST of the time, but in general it was all good.
All the cast were amazing no need to mention all of them everyone knows the crew at this point.
The High Evolutionary, which is the main villain which was played by Chukwudi Iwuji was very good and it shows that villains that are just filled with pure evil and nothing more while lacking motive can sometimes still be as good.
As to Adam warlock, I was very excited to see him on the big screen since I last saw him in the "marvel's guardians of the galaxy" game, and he delivered but I was bit disappointed with how much screen time he got, he got decent screen time but I just wished I've seen more with him with some more depth around him.
Marvel you've done it congratulations, THIS is how you make a movie.
P. S. "I am more a DC enjoyer".
Renfield (2023)
Nicolas Cage has been doing good for the past couple of years
Renfield,
Nicolas Cage went a lot downhill in the past decade or so when it comes to movies and hollywood in general. But he has been making a great comeback in the past few years in many different roles such as "Pig (2021)", The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
(2022)" etc., despite all of the terrible work he was in before that just as a cash grab.
Seeing that Nicolas Cage now in the role of Dracula in a supposedly "horror" movie filled with comedy was already very exciting as to how silly and fun the movie would be (in a good way), and he fully delivered, Nicolas Cage was meant for this role as he used all of his over the top facial expressions and acting to fit the role.
Nicholas Hoult as Renfield was amazing and has VERY strong potential if signed into more roles especially "more serious" roles because this guys knows how to act and I've had seen this potential in him specifically in "The Menu (2022)". Awkwafina was also kind of good and the comedic bits of her were hitting most of the time.
This movie was fun in general for it's very suitable runtime of and hour and a half almost and is worth a watch.
The Pope's Exorcist (2023)
Russell Crowe carries
The Pope's Exorcist,
I watch all genres of entertainment and I don't mind any of them, in fact I try to enjoy them as much as I possibly can, but with this movie I couldn't for the most part.
Horror movies generally are generic and samey with no good stories nor characters to support it, Russell Crowe is the only reason that passes this movie as watchable.
The supporting cast were terrible and non-memorable and the story was somewhat good and engaging enough for like the first hour but it went downhill afterwards (last act got me a bit excited again but it went by really quick)
Don't get me started on the demon voice acting which sounded like a bootleg version of venom
Since it's a "horror" movie, did I feel scared, uneasy or stressed ? No
Did it at least have cheap jump scares ? Also no
It is a bit sad to see this movie flop because I was excited when the trailers were shown to see Russell Crowe in the role of Vatican Father of exorcism in a horror movie and he did deliver his best and it was good but that's about it.
A Man Called Otto (2022)
Otto portraying tom hanks
A Man Called Otto, tom hanks strikes again with his portrayal of many different characters through many legendary and classical movies.
This movie is no different than the others as he successfully adds the character of Otto Anderson to the list of characters that will be remembered in the future. This character is based and replicated from the swedish original character "Ove" from the swedish movie "A Man Called Ove".
Tom hanks really convinced me with his portrayal of a grumpy old man that insists on having things in order while living in a small neighborhood, and he happens to have lost the will to live due to losing his wife.
Supporting cast was cool and enjoyable especially marisol which was portrayed by Mariana Treviño
This is a sad movie and it leans more towards the drama side and the comedy breaks are just there to balance it out, when there is drama, it hits HARD.
A predictable but very satisfying conclusion that fits the narrative.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
John wick is an adrenaline booster
John wick: Chapter 4, Looking back at all the previous john wick movies, this chapter in specific is basically all the three previous movies combined times 1.5, 2 hours and 50 minutes of non-stop action sequences from beginning to end with barely any break to catch a breathe in between. Keanu Reeves always ups the level with each iteration with the amount of physical work and training required to be able to do these fight and action scenes alongside the stunts.
Really cool direction and cinematography choices throughout the movie in multiple shots and sceneries.
Bringing back the mid tempo electronic music and the addition of soundtracks never disappoints as a beatboxer/musician.
This movie is adrenaline.
