Mai Demon (2023)
You've seen the story 6 times last year already
Is South Korea running out of writer & directors?
I'm utterly disappointed to see yet another drama using the same plot with absolutely nothing new added to it. Almost every drama that came out in 2023 has this same exact overused plot. This is truly hurting the global K-drama audience as most of us watch K-Drama for the unique plots and storyline.
My Demon obviously has outstanding visuals like Song Kang & Kim Yo Jung but their acting is not going to save the sunken ship this time. Villians in this series operate like AI bots, you already know who and their next move. Such predictability has killed the suspense from the very beginning of the drama.
Nothing new can be said about the storyline as it's just another low-effort copy-paste from other popular K-Dramas that you've already seen before.
Gyeongseong Keuricheo (2023)
Were you searching for logic in Marvel/DC movies?
It's a K-Drama made with a mixture between reality & fiction with entertainment in mind. However some military & scientific scholars here are trying to explain how bolt-action rifles work and what not all while completely missing out on the outstanding storytelling, visual & dramatization aspect of this series.
This drama perfectly outlines the historical events, the pain & suffering endured by people back in WW2, be it Korean, Japanese or anybody. Sub-plots in this series are excellent and short-lived as timely accurate with the progression of the plot.
Rest of the episodes are yet to air and some are frantically drawing conclusion for some upvotes while flaming K-Drama fans. Seriously what were you expecting?
Doona! (2023)
Neverthe-lesser: Not every webtoon deserves a K-Drama
What kept me going is Bae Suzy, background music & the aesthetics of the series; otherwise, it's a downgrade of Nevertheless.
Even though their acting was decent, I couldn't connect my emotions with the leads or the story. The story felt weak at best & the characters clearly could have done more if the writing didn't force them to talk like video game NPCs. On top of that, some random, unexpected character introductions didn't add anything to the story.
You are either dropping this series on Episode 2 or watching it in full; there are no other choices.
For the K-Drama fans, be aware, Doona is purposefully made to feel like a Hollywood Drama. So you won't find that one super niche plot twist, typical Samsung Galaxy moments, mandatory car accidents, or a kiss scene at Episode 13 followed by a breakup.
MR-9: Do or Die (2023)
Action movie makers now know what exactly they should not do.
I've a mixed feeling about this. They had good actors/actresses with years of experience, new faces, good storyline (from the book), a decent budget and this is what they come up with?
Unnecessarily loud background music, out of context transitions, forced backstories of protagonists that failed to touch the audience,
lame comedy attempts, too much location transitions (At some point it felt like a geographical documentary), lazy character introductions, John Wick'ed dialogue deliveries, everyone in the movie felt like video game NPCs.
I feel bad for ABM Sumon. This guy clearly has the talent but his potential was reduced to ashes.
