Anything Else (2003)
more of the same
Started 15 minutes into it and left 30 minutes later. I couldn't take it anymore. Why do people continue to insist Woody Allen is a genius? He hasn't had an original piece of work for years.
He keeps writing the same characters over and over. Same music, same Woody character just a younger body. The man has lost all originality and imagination. It is as if he just changed the names of one of his past screenplays. Jason Biggs is the new body, he can do better. Christina Ricci is the new Diane Keaton, yech! This film is pathetic. Don't lose a minute of your life on this. Run the other direction! Fast!
Lord of the Flies (1963)
Well done on the DVD extras
We all know the film and book from grade school - they do still teach it don't they? Anyway, I am incredibly impressed with the Criterion DVD extras. Home movies, outtakes, deleted scenes, scrapbook, etc. all with commentary from a cameraman as well as the director, there are even book excerpts read by William Golding, the author. The entire collection is a work of art unto itself.
Mulholland Dr. (2001)
SPOILERS ABOUND!!!
The quality of this film is obvious in the actual number of comments it has generated. It is doing just what Lynch wants: stimulating people to think and react.
STOP READING NOW IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW!
This film is Diane's story. Betty is Diane's fantasy self and Rita is Diane's fantasy Camilla. The entire first half is the fantasy. D knows she can never have C because C is not interested in her (even though C could have lesbian tendencies). If C is recreated as an amnesiac,R, and D is recreated as the perfect small town girl, B, than the slate can be wiped clean for the two of them to be together.
The second half explains the circumstance leading to the fantasy. Perhaps the actual fantasy takes place during the split second from the bullet entering D's brain to its exit and her death.
As usual Lynch has included a number of inexplicable intricasies that have some sort of subtextural relationship to eachother. Just that much more to discuss with friends.
I recommend everyone watch the film at least twice in an attempt to understand.
