Orange County (2002)

Great

I had low expectations because of the meta score, but this movie charmed me entirely. A perfect picture of what it feels like to be on the precipice of adulthood. Also a surprisingly all star cast. Katherine O'Hara, Jack Black, John Lithgow, Kevin Kline!! I told my husband we should go on a Katherine O'Hara movie streak after watching this this. Delightfully acted, funny from start to finish. I'm also from Orange County, so this felt very specific for me (although high schools DO NOT look like that there... haha). A lovely, light, nostalgic watch especially if you have complicated feelings about where you grew up.

A straight up delight

I just re-read the book and forgot how many of the best lines are lifted straight from the source. This movie is a testament to all the things that still draw us to the book 200+ years after it was written.

The wit! The subtlety! The charm! All brought to life by good ass acting. It has me irrepressibly smiling. I love it so much. The Bennett parents are especially engaging, they get me every time.

This movie came out when I was in middle school and I watch it once a year. I might start reading the book again once a year now too.

2-3 scenes I could do without. One is the last one. Too cheesy.

An almost perfect show
4 February 2024
Don't come here looking to get your heartstrings pulled.

This show is not warm and fuzzy, but it is stylish, smart, and extremely well-acted. Also has a great soundtrack, and doesn't rely on gore/ shock. It prioritizes wit and plot.

Save a few moments of asking just 1% too much belief suspension, this show is perfect. Im sure it will survive a few re-watches. I suspect there are telling details to be caught the second & third time around. I could change my mind on the last 1%.

We've seen anti-hero shows before, but this one is the most sophisticated. It trusts the viewer to understand. It's better than Dexter, Based on a True Story, etc. It's Wednesday for the real world (which is to say, darker.)

Not warm and fuzzy at all. Very cold.

Bro. A movie for true fans of ghost stories.
24 September 2023
Y'all's 5.5 review is out of line. If you have a short attention span and/or don't understand the disturbing subtlety of a perfect ghost story, you won't like this movie. Those of us that could listen "true" ghost stories all day will be completely spooked. This puts you right in the middle of one.

I actually really loved that we got to know the characters a bit more than a typical scary movie. I thought Paxton was charming.

Not a masterpiece or a perfect movie, but definitely one that will stick with me. I feel like it's a true testament to the subtle power of a ghost story. Watch it in October.

The Bear: Fishes (2023)
Season 2, Episode 6

Maybe the best 40 mins or whatever of TV I've ever seen
18 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Literally a perfect episode. Everything down to Jamie Lee Curtis' nails. Mike crying by himself. The close up cinematography. Mike's look when Odenkirk says he's nothing. Just incredible.

Also weirdly heartwarming and relatable? I think so many of us have addiction and mental health issues in our families. It all just really connected emotionally for me and I thought it was beautiful and sad and human. Just a perfect hour or whatever of TV.

I love this show in general, but I do have a problem with cheesy stuff. A bit lactose intolerant if you will. This show can be borderline too cheesy for me, but this episode 100 percent made me commit again. A piece of straight up art.

The only way it could end!
25 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This was the only way it could end! I thought it was pure cheese in some parts (old guy makeup) but really touching and a natural end to the show. This ending was set up for so long throughout the show. I thought it was really well done.

Wish we knew who Sam's wife was and had Dean reunite with more people in heaven. Would be cool to see him and Jo reunite, get their own cabin.

I'm okay with the question marks on Sam's story. Is he still helping people? Who's his wife? Something to ponder/draw your own conclusions.

Just wanted to counteract the bad reviews! Sad writing, not bad writing! Just a little cheese!
