The Virginian: The Modoc Kid (1967)
Slow but intentional TV
The show is quite slow but they it feels like they take their time with the extra shots to ensure they are either pretty, or add to the drama of the scene.
I watched this in 2023 and tried to look at this episode as if I was in 1960. Not what I'm used to but doesn't mean it lacks quality.
As I said above, the show does feel intentional. The actors take the jobs seriously and don't try to overact, but keep it meaningful. There are quite a few moments that do feel slow with seconds of characters looking at each other or setting the scene. With TV and TV shows being an ever evolving media that hadn't been around very long, it must've been nice to feel like the show was paced at an understandable rate.
It's not the most amazing plot or interesting characters I've ever met, and for some they may feel totally disengaged. I was able to at least connect with the characters enough to watch the movie, but not necessarily care about them. I leave my rating at a 6.
A good catch of Harrison Ford early in his career!
Luv (1967)
Corny, but not insufferable
It's weird to watch a movie from the 1960s with 21st century lense. The comedy doesn't flow and at times you're not sure if what your watching is funny or bad writing.
Relaxing the mind a bit and letting go of the 21st century standards of speed we have for comedy, you may find the experience more enjoyable. A few chuckles here and there, even if just for how ludacris it must've been for these two humans to say these lines to each other, or participate in the physical stunts
Also, a good Harrison Ford catch from his early career. (He plays the angry driver in the white convertible that Ellen hits with her car.)
Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round (1966)
The Dogs Steal the Show
It's good to know they made bad movies in the 60s too.
Confusing and intricate plot. Many times it felt like the scenes were unnecessary and didn't develop the characters or forward the plot. Mostly people lighting a lot of cigarettes. I wasn't super invested in what happened to the characters because I didn't know who was who or why. Main guy was weirdly good with dogs.
If you're here for Harrison Ford, look up the bellhop scene and save your $4 rental fee.
Lots of smoking, just smoking cigarettes all over the place. Also no security checkpoints in the airport, wild times.
Had to look up what a truss was. Spoiler: it's weird underwear.
