Chimpanzee (2011)

visually stunning
2 May 2012
What can really be said about this movie.... Its a fantastic documentary, and unlike other wildlife documentary's its not overly sad or graphic, so parents can bring their kids.

The shots and views of the chimps and the rain forest, are absolutely amazing. All aspects of the lives of chimpanzees are shown, even the not so glamorous ones. However the filmmakers show the harshness of the lives of chimps while appealing to all ages, and not sacrificing content. For example: in one of the few scenes at can be perceived as violent, an obscured view of the chimps is shown, not enough to mask their actions, but enough to make it tasteful.

Tim Allen does a fantastic job of narrating, being both funny and informative. He even makes a throw back joke or two.

This film is inspiring, fun, and informative. Its fun for the whole family, and I am not just saying that. I left the theater thinking how alike humans and chimpanzees are, and would recommend this movie to any animal lover.

Lockout (2012)
5/10
Commando in Space
16 April 2012
Lockout is the story of a man named Snow (Guy Pearce) who goes into a space station prison, to rescue the presidents daughter (Maggie Grace), who is trapped in an prison outbreak.

Of course there is more depth to the plot, but not too much, the majority of the film is the two main characters running around and barely making it through doors, that can not be broken through. There is also a sub plot that could have been more interesting than the actual plot, and may be used in the hope of a sequel.

Lockouts action is good, and many of the prisoners look intimidating. However the movie fails to really connect with anyone, and the movies hero only delivers snarky comments instead of real dialogue, making him one sided. The movie is also entirely predictable leaving no room for surprises. There is the seasoned veteran man saving woman aspect, but unfortunately this is not taken.

I would say that Lockout is not a complete loss, but a better rental than movie trip. Despite being similar to other movies Lockout is not a remake or sequel, making it one of the few original works in the past few years.

A much needed Thriller
16 September 2011
I saw the Devil is an intense, gritty, terrifying thriller, something that we do not see much of in the US.

I saw the Devil follows a secret agent type cop, who's wife is murdered. The officer tracks the killer relentlessly, blending the roles of both officer and psychopath. Once the killer is found it ignites a new form of cat and mouse. The film has a great many twists and turns that will keep you guessing as to what the final scene will hold.

This film has scenes of intense horror, and it does so without using excessive amounts of violence. Do not get me wrong fans of intense violence will not be disappointed, there are some things that will make you place your hands in front of your eyes, and sounds that can make blood run cold. However there are scenes that make one feel helpless as they watch the would be victims trapped, and without hope.

The movie also shows the killer, Oldboy star Min-sik Choi, and his horrific lifestyle. Leaving no room to question what type of person he is, including that of the officer, played by Byung-hun Lee.

This is a revenge movie, but it dips itself into a great many genres as the film takes you on a wild ride all leading to the finale.

had its moments
22 April 2011
I was really looking forward to this short, and it wasn't a total let down, but let just say I was hoping for more.

The star studded cast made one think that there was going to be a lot more going on than there was, and the jokes fell flat most of the time.

This short starring Danny McBride, Elijah Wood, and Seth Rogen as the younger beastie boys, have a dance off with their older selfs. The older or possibly present day beastie boys are portrayed by Will Ferrel, John C Rielly, and Jack Black.

The short is broken up in between sessions of mayhem, and rapping while walking down the street and raising hell towards all passerby's. There are brief periods of improvising, but it runs a little too long, and gets stale fast.

The direction was pretty neat, and the added musical sequences were also an impressive touch.

Unless you are a hardcore bestir boy fan, or are just interested in seeing which celebrity you can spot in this 30 min short I think you can do without it.

looking forward to the new album though!

Insidious (I) (2010)

Surprisingly Good and Intense
2 April 2011
The film Insidious has done something many horror movies have failed to do recently, and that is to be scary.

Insidious has a lot of really intense moments that scare, and then grab hold of you. Its not entirely made up of "make you jump" scenes, which it does have, but scenes with genuine horror.

Insidious has taken a risk with doing something original, and It works here for them. Without giving anything away the movie does not just talk about whats scary, or show the the aftermath of something going on in a room that you can only hear until its over and the door magically unlocks. Insidious shows you whats scary, and quite often reminds you whats there, and waiting in the dark.

Sucker Punch (2011)
5/10
Glass Half Full
2 April 2011
Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch has amazing visuals, and music that drives the scenes really hard. However where the movie falls short is the story. The story appears to be a well thought out script with fantasy worlds, and alternate realities, but it never really gathers any sympathy towards the characters.

It was cool to see an action film filled with girls doing awesome moves and taking out the bad guys. But after the first action scene the fighting got kind of stale and repetitive, 'OK another slow motion back flip and shooting the gun while upside down.'

Perhaps it is with the success of 300, and Watchmen that has set the bar so high for Snyder's films, or the comparing of which makes Sucker Punch fall short.

This is by no means a bad movie, just not as good as one might expect from the likes of Zack Snyder.

Machete (2010)
8/10
awesome
6 September 2010
Machete has a great many things going for it: good acting, story and scoring. The music added a lot of flavor to the scenes, and gave it a different kind of feel. The acting all around was great Steven Seagal as his first out right villain role was decent. Danny Trejo who is not often a lead actor really showed what he can do given the opportunity, he made the role, and movie I can really not see anyone else playing it.Robert DeNiro was cool in this movie but kind of seemed like he wasn't trying all that hard to give the role much depth. The movie has added some comedy without over doing and the action was over the top but also within the bounds the movie created with its early life in grindhouse. Machete has an artistic view and a movie that is fun to see as well as being a solid movie. Bottom line if your a fan of the genre go see Machete you will not be disappointed.
