Earthlings (2005)
a crash course on animal rights...a must see for anyone who cares about animals
I started reading about human rights when I was around 18 after i had been arrested I began reading the world section of newspapers. I discovered that the world beyond America is very different, many people in America have serious problems, poverty can kill here too, but in comparison to parts of Africa and places all over the globe, places as close as hati, America is heaven. So I joined a human rights group at UCONN and learned a lot. Its on thing to be aware of world issues but to really research the problems changes your perspective on life, on justice really. I had a dog for 17 years his name was comet, he was my best friend. He got hit by a car, I was getting ready to work the 3rd shift at espn the car droveaway, I'm thankful it did I don't know what I would have done to the driver. His death changed my life, like the death of a close family member it didn't matter that he was "just" a dog to me, for months nothing seemed to be right, colors were off, the sky wasn't right, my conversations meant nothing, life was dark. I don't remember how but I came across a man named Gary Francione, and read his book an "introduction to animal rights your child or the dog?". I was never the same after reading that book, I didn't know there were law professors writing about what I felt. since then I have read many books, watched hours of video of abuse and whatever else I came across to better understand the plight of animals, the unnecessary pain. I could not watch this movie straight on thru, I needed to watch it in pieces, it was the most honest film I have ever seen about the way we treat animals as things, and not sentient creatures. I didn't think you could make a movie like that, I didn't think anyone cared but I was wrong, a lot of people care. start with yourself, giving up animal products is the surest way you can help animals, learn about going vegan. good luck
Hotaru no haka (1988)
the most powerful movie i have ever seen
i just finished the movie and if not for my 2 dogs I would have to drive to someones house at 2am because I could not be alone right now. I dare not give anything away but I will say that the movie really got to me. I consider myself very educated and informed about the most troubling issues facing the planet I live on, but this movie really shook me up. I had to hold back tears with all my might because I was scared to let go, I was afraid because the movie, a cartoon, became so real I forgot I was watching a movie, I was completely lost in the story and it was scary. A cartoon should not be able to do that. Please watch the movie and remember it is a true story.
Iraq in Fragments (2006)
amazing...simply amazing
John Langely somehow created amazing shots all the while risking his life daily in a war zone where white skin can be a death sentence. I recommend this film not just to the documentary crowd, but to anyone interested in the Iraq war. Sometimes the shots are so breath-taking you don't believe it's reality, it is too perfect, even beautiful. I would have called this film, Iraq in people, because thats what I saw in this film, an intimate, very personal look at the struggles of people, who live in a war. The relationship between the boy(Muhammad) and his boss is hard to watch. The boy admires him like a father, but the man puts him down often and with no visible regret when he breaks the boy down because he can't spell his father's name after 4 years of school.
