The Losers (I) (2010)

Run-of-the-mill GOOD action flick
10 September 2023
This is your typical action/suspense flick. It checks all the boxes in an almost predictable fashion. It follows your classic action/suspense movie format, much like making a peanut & butter sandwich. Nothing to write home about, but worth a watch on your Saturday evening if nothing else presses your interest. Filled with enough "classic" action spots & classic "one-liners" (or lines that don't wander far) that you might discuss at work or some other setting for kicks & giggles; it's worth a "throw away" watch. It even does some popular 80's music to entice we "old peeps." Overall, I can't knock it; it achieves its purpose!

The Blackout (2019)

Interesting, not necessarily novel, but interesting.
24 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Ya know it takes nearly the whole movie to reveal its premise--and it's not a novel one--but it taps into a philosophically existential premise: Mankind's need for power, to procreate, to have pleasure. At the end it's a very brief exposé of human history in doing this via one of the primary characters. It also throws a view of religion (or more exactingly, God) with a very different twist for God's purpose for humans. It's not religious at all, but, yes, God gets tossed in the mix. Again, it's more philosophical in that if you tend to be a deep thinker, this will tap into that. And to make this premise workable it's decorated around a movie of aliens, military, threat of human extinction, human history, superior intelligence, human heroics. Most of the aforementioned themes were rather normal and predictable, but the end--the philosophical/religious part--made the movie for me. At the end I was going, "Wow, they went there...and they went there WELL."

Similar in theme(s) to movie 65.
17 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Ironically, I just watched the movie "65" last night. It has a similar theme to that movie with (if you're a believer) the Christian (explanation) of "new earth"; "old earth." Without going too far down that path, Christian beliefs (to some extent) describe the history of the earth as "before flood vs after flood." A primary element is thar "before flood" the atmosphere of the earth was much denser, hence, things grew bigger, including animals. This is like a spin-off of that, but, instead, humans concocted a way to do this. But for Hollywood purposes, some wrinkles are tossed in for dramatic/intellectual effect.

Clever plot.
16 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This was a clever script based on the good old fashion debate of creation (religious) vs. Evolution (modern science view) of the earth--EXCEPT--no creation view here. It essentially explores the evolutionary view of "once upon a time..." the earth was a planet of gigantic reptiles. Then (spoiler alert) the "early earth" is struck by a meteor (common view for science today) essentially setting into motion catastrophic events that bring us to who/how we are today (in the most prime of human instincts). It's the mixing of a movie/story theme of "man vs. Nature" vs. "man vs. History" that will certainly attract the majority of movie audience. NOW, understand that the elements I've highlighted are not in detail in the movie. You could say I've done some "filling in the blanks." They've been drawn from a science background, so if that ain't your thing, I'd guess much of this review won't hold a lot of water. I just touched on themes (also having a college English background) that I've learned to identify in stories. Either way, it's definitely worth the watch.

Simple sell. Advertised with Jolie. Crappy movie.
20 June 2023
This movie rides on Angelina Jolie's name (and that's in retrospect looking at it from now)--she's not even a primary character here. She's a passing character here. This is (albeit announced as so) a story based on a real event, that basically follows the storyline to a: "Is that it???" You might as well watch an episode of America's Unsolved Mysteries (or whatever it was called). This takes you through a true occurrence that was never solved. BUT...it leaves you at the same place.... STILL UNSOLVED!!! What's worse is that it doesn't really leave you with anything to "chew" on (i.e., something to talk about at work or with friends/family to talk about). It just...ends. It doesn't even leave you with captions for "if you have seen call..." This movie is essentially HALF a movie that leaves you at the, "What's gonna happen now???" point. And there is no, "What's gonna happen now," the credits start rolling...

Straight kick your butt or kill you movie.
16 June 2023
Lame. Straight up hand to hand/shoot you/slice or stab you/blow you up action movie. No interesting storyline. Action from start to finish. Best part was how she had this unique ability to disrupt adversaries by throwing solid objects at their head/face before finishing them off. It was actually amusing. But, again, storyline was pretty predictable and lacking. This is the kind of movie you watch if you want to down a few beers with friends and watch Jason Moore like action and critique or analyze aspects of the action sequences.. Interestingly, I thought she resembled Demi Moore and during a couple moments Linda Hamilton (i.e., The Terminator) .

Leaves you with questions.
14 June 2023
This was a bittersweet movie (ending). But it leaves you with some, "Yeah, but...," or "What if...?," wonderings/questions. I can't really put those out here for fear of spoiling parts of the movie. It also has one scene that seems to go "Hollywood" to get resolve--it doesn't match the dimensions?, frame?, backdrop?, of the movie. Makes ya go, "Okay, all things considered, HOW did that happen? Overall, decent movie. Has enough in plot to keep you watching. But at the end, you might go, "WTF? (to various unfinished aspects of storyline)." BUT...I'm of the opinion it's a movie that if friends, family, or coworkers watch, it'll be a topic of discussion if it comes up.

Psychological movie due to various layers that need interpreting
11 June 2023
I've read multiple reviews of this movie and all are pretty correct. From slow to boring to confusing to plotless (and many more) this movie is a psychological presentation--coming from a psychologist. It's riddled with various subplots that don't get answered to a drudging plow thru a movie that really doesn't come to much of a climax other than, "well that's what happens IF you...." This movie had me wondering "What's the point of this movie?" all the way to the end and then it seemed to come (somewhat) clear at the end. It lacks the A (setup)-B (controversy)-C (unexpected curve)-D (resolution) of a "typical" movie. This is a movie that will require analyzing the various components of it to gain a real satisfaction. But then, if you (and others) do this, the end still leaves you with, "Why did I do this???" In the end, it's a movie that flexes its philosophical/psychological muscles but to the conclusion of asking self, "What was it that made me want to watch this movie?"
