Khufiya (2023)
Overall a Good Movie
It is a gripping movie in the first half. A spy thriller with all the mystery, intrigue, espionage, international diplomacy and glamour thrown in against a background of the US interests in Afghanistan and India's Nuclear deal with the US. It keeps you deeply interested and involved throughout. The action is slick and much much better than movies of similar Genre seen onshore but not as smooth and fast paced as it is in Hollywood movies. We simply don't make those kind of movies or are not able to edit that effectively.
The second part has more twists and turns than one had bargained for. It tends to just drag a little bit but is still able to keep one interested and involved. The families of the protagonists and the antagonist are well woven into the story and act as catalysts at times to drive the story forward. Human relationships, sexual orientation and Army Background are all quite seamlessly woven into the fabric of the movie.
All the actors have performed extremely well. One expects nothing less than excellent from Tabbu and she delivers effortlessly. The standout performance however is by Wamiqa Gabbi particularly in the first half as a happy go lucky and trusting wife. She has delivered on her character very effectively. In the second half, the scene where she has sex with a husband she can never forgive is also well executed. (incidentally Thank you Vishal Bharadwaj for not blaming the wife for all evils).
Overall an eminently watchable movie. Would definitely recommend seeing it !!
Gadar 2 (2023)
Wasn't worth the time spent
I had this feeling that it wouldn't be worth watching but got taken in by the collection of over Rs 600 crores. And the two stars given are because I like Sunny Deol. The movie deserves zero.
Unbelievably bad. Nothing made sense. Objects thrown by Tara Singh travelled faster than bullets shot at him. Mindless violence, killing of 100s of enemies ( That could be the reason it is making money), masala on enmity between two nations, some more masala on friendship at people level between two nation. A love story that seems as incredulous as the overall plot of the movie. Villains that seem more comic than menacing.
The major issue is that nothing in the movie seems even remotely remotely convincing, how so ever much you might stretch your imagination. Please watch the movie if you have a below average IQ. You will love it.
The Reader (2008)
An Outstanding Movie
What an amazing movie. Starts off almost as a boring movie with an affair between a 15 year old and a woman twice his age. A lot of adult content has been thrown in.
Just when one wonders where all this is heading, comes the major twist in the plot. It really shakes you up. But if there is something that defines this movie, it is the subtle handling of a very complex historical theme. It attempts to slightly humanise the other side where the lowest rung were following orders. No judgements passed either on the affair or the Auschwitz's killings. The facts are laid out before you and you almost flow with the tide of emotions that well up within and are torn between the plight of the victims ( an unforgivable crime) and atleast one character who doesn't understand that what she did was wrong. .
The questions asked in the movie will vary for each one of us depending on our value system. Some of these could be
Is it possible to continue to love someone who has been found guilty of heinous crimes against humanity.
Whether a crime is a crime in a moral sense or as interpreted by the laws of the land prevailing at that time. Or the winners are free to frame laws with retrospective effect.
And the eternal question of the Nuremberg trials where the plea that the killers were merely following orders received from their top bosses was not accepted
Kate Winslet has stolen the show completely. She is more than outstanding !!
Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (2023)
A wasted effort
The movie wasn't worth our time due to
1. No effort to have a proper story or screen play. This perhaps is the biggest drawback.
2. Every scene is what we have seen in multiple Salman Khan movies or other action movies.
3. All the other actors are practically wasted except perhaps Pooja Hegde. They are reduced to junior artists.
4. Songs and music are forgettable
5. The editing is poor and makes you feel that all other artists are being underplayed to make Bhai look better to the extent of their costumes also being really bad.
6. Pooja was a bit of a saving grace.
In conclusion It is time Salman Bhai ( in his own interest) realised that he cannot make himself the USP of the movie. That time has long gone by. He needs a good, age appropriate story, a good screenplay, some hard work on his own (over) acting, good Co stars ( not the pack of jokers assembled in this movie), good music and all this needs hard work and imagination.
Otherwise he will continue to waste his time, money and energy and likewise for us.
