Next Gen (2018)
An alternative animated film for alternative people.
Lots of people moaning on here about Mai's character. I don't understand where they're coming from I can only assume its the sheltered crowd who are spoiled watching Pixar movies and forget there's a world out there.
Yeah Pixar is great though the golden age is long gone and as Disney tends to do they pump out formulaic films full of tropes and tired ideas.
Going back to Mai's character. She is a teenage girl who has lost her father. Not only that but she doesn't really have any friends and her mother is obsessed with robots. She basically replaces her now dead husband with a pleasure-bot.
Wouldn't you be p*ss3d off? If you had a sheltered middle class upbringing with no problems and a perfect family.. ok maybe you cannot empathise here. Though for all of those with less than perfect childhoods with a little rebellious streak. I think these are the people enjoying this movie.
As others have pointed out some of the action is visually impressive and the most important thing the story has heart. Hope you check it out.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
What happened John..
I loved the first JW and saw it as a crazy fun return to the 90's action flicks such as The Rock, The Matrix,etc.. The sequel was heavy on the close quarters combat, the tactical gun play between pistol, shotgun and rifle and mostly delivered though some of the character development or just quality of actors was not on par with the first.
The third instalment starts out well hitting hard with great successive action scenes including the knife fight and the great horse shoot out. Somewhere after this things started to lag. I think it was the moment the adjudicator character turns up to be fun police. That's how it felt. Along come the rules to curb the crazy balls out fun we loved in the first instalment.
The rest of the movie is a bit scrappy and although we have high velocity action pawn all over the place it doesn't quite hit the spot.
I was left puzzled at the end and gave up on ever caring about the next instalment.
Mirai no Mirai (2018)
Incoherent at best but well made affair
I don't have the energy or will to write in depth here though my general feeling after watching Mirai was a surprise at the lack of a solid narrative structure. The film seemed to spurt all over the place and didn't come together like other lower rated but much more enjoyable anime I've watched lately like Fireworks.
I was very surprised to see this was nominated for an oscar. Don't get me wrong I loved Wolf Children and understand Summer Wars is help in high esteem though I really didn't get a feeling of something special here.
Would it be cynical to suggest the theme of the farther holding the baby had something to do with that similar to The Incredibles 2..
I'm quite tired of politics seeping into everything these days without regard for quality so for me I have to rate this low though I acknowledge the film covers some tough topics such as how the first born deals with the second child which I can attest to. The result is sloppy and not very interesting though well animated and still emotional.
Better Call Saul: Five-O (2015)
Step into the dark
A stunning episode and a defining moment in this series. We follow mike into his past and discover the car parking attendant is much more than he seems. Something I've loved throughout this season one has been the lighting and how its used to portray each character. In Mikes episode we descend into almost pure darkness, one scene that stands out is a beautiful shot of Mike inside his symbolic prison that is his parking attendant booth highlighted with a halo of street lights and almost complete darkness. A moving episode and perfectly sets Mike up as a force to be reckoned with as well as his dark origins.
Norm Macdonald Has a Show (2018)
NORM!
Continuing the same formula as his podcast with a shorter runtime and a little tighter. I noticed in the credits David Letterman consultation. I'm really enjoying this so far and hope Netflix don't wuss out on a show that doesn't pander for general appeal though does have great unique content.
I hope the voice of the fans is enough to keep this going as Norm has plenty.
Silence (2016)
Stunning and draining at the same time
After feeling like Scorsese had nothing left other than corny cliched swan songs I was struck by Silence. What can I say about this. Something so majestic and thoughtful. It moved me to my core.
The images still flow through me. Swells and flows.
Thank you for this stunning work!
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Not necessary
We probably all knew something was off the way the marketing campaign was heading this one. Way too much revealed going for the hard sell. Generally that's a sign someone is trying to hook us for a bum ride.
I grew up loving Aliens almost wearing out my VHS copy I must have viewed it once a week for sometime. After finding Alien and appreciating its gritty aesthetic and suspense filled while simple story telling. After being obsessed with all things xeno related...
So...I was one who did enjoy Prometheus its and its turn towards the sci-fi adventure movie, slightly p*ssed RS gave into the studios and gave us the Deacon and giant facehugger thing at the end.. though I left the movie with an imagination filled with what would follow in David and Shaws adventure flying off in the engineers ship.
Its a shame then that Covenant p*ssed all over that dream and gave us a by the numbers rehash of the first two Alien movies with some titbits of the Prometious plot thrown in to try and glue the two movies together.
What I liked: visually the film looked great, the first half paced well and offered some genuine shocks though with some HUH moments thrown in...this seemed to be consistent throughout the movie...stuff happening that just seemed stupid or comedic. I recall another reviewer saying everyone seemed stupid or incompetent. Perhaps we could not expect a group of colonists to be hardened killers so this could be a little harsh.
David does have some interesting moments and psychotic behaviour though mostly his god/Hitler complex is super clichéd.
Everything involving the xeno is just awful...I have nothing to say.
I did enjoy the neomorph and found it rather creepy. I would say it really is the star of this film. You could just walk out the cinema after the demise of the neomoph and be left thinking at wasn't so bad...stay till the end and you could regret it..
Final conclusion...walking in I said...I hope its at least better than Alien Resurrection... walking out I can't even say it even met that benchmark.
Black Mirror: Men Against Fire (2016)
Unbalanced
Being a fan of Brooker since his early days I lapped up the first two series of Black Mirror and raved lyrically about them...for series 3...I sense a growing heavy bias towards gender politics that's starting to obscure from the quality of the show. Especially in this episode the main character is shown as a fearful man who is consistently over shadowed by butch females. Don't get me wrong I grew up loving strong female leads such as Sigourney Weaver in the aliens movies, enjoying Sex in the City, Ally McBeal, cybill shepherd among others so I am in no way some male chauvinist... though in the recent trend I find Brooker pandering to the anti male narrative in a distasteful manor.
I resent lazy populace movements and hope the series re balances itself along the way. Emasculating men is a trend and an ugly one...it does nothing to embrace women's rights just pollute reality.
30 Days of Night (2007)
7.1...has everyone gone mad!?
Right I felt compelled to post my first comment on IMDb after watching this monstrously poor attempt at a horror movie. This movie sucked (excuse the pun) on every level...non existent plot (really..why were those things there? where did they come from? what the f*ck was the point?) awful acting by everyone...although to be fair the script was so poor they didn't have a lot to work with...not one interesting character in the whole film...it really felt like I was watching a crap Masters of Horror episode! Its not even like it had any decent gore effects to redeem it from the mire...aside from one scene where a character drives a tractor with a huge chainsaw attached to the front through a crowd of the rubbish fast zombie vampire things. Best film so far this year...3.10 to Yuma...worst film this decade goes to this steaming pile of sh*te!
