10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
A decent thriller unrelated to Cloverfield
I was excited to see this movie as I knew nothing about it from the trailers. When the trailer showed the movie revolving around people trapped in a bunker unable to leave, I thought they were misleading us, and the truth about what was outside would be the primary plot and it would somehow relate to the events of Cloverfield. It doesn't, there isn't even a mention of those events. This is not a spoiler, it's a warning, so that you don't watch a film for reasons it doesn't deserve.
It seems the intention of this film was always to be nothing other than a thriller about a woman in captivity, and anything else that may happen was an afterthought, because someone wanted to cash-in on the name recognition Cloverfield would bring.
The acting is great though, the atmosphere is very tense and exchanges between characters are awkward which is hard to pull off with someone as lovable as John Goodman. On the flip side it's plagued by jump-scares which creates a false sense of unease, as I never knew when the next loud noise would strike.
Had the movie just told a story without lying about it's connections to another movie, and not used jump scares, I would respect it as a thriller if that's what the intention was. The ending was not worth waiting through the rest of it to see. As it stands, I don't recommend anyone see it in cinemas, but see it on DVD if you want to.
Cho-neung-ryeok-ja (2010)
Great movie
The description of this movie alone convinced me to watch it, and the cover said it was better than any superhero film, and I'd say they weren't far off.
It reflects a very Korean style; kind of unsure about what genre it wants to be, switching between drama and comedy, but having just enough character development to have you care about the important characters but not explaining anything you don't need to know, held up by great actors.
There's some very memorable scenes in this film, and some very memorable performances, along side a great story, similar in some ways to American films like Unbreakable and Chronicle. The score to the film was also good, and quite fitting, while not necessarily memorable.
Overall I give the movie 8/10 and recommend it to anyone wanting to see a semi-dramatic movie with many entertaining, exciting, superheroesque themes.
Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of 'The War of the Worlds' (2006)
Really lame play, good music
The music is great, just like the album, with subtle updates. The stuff happening on the stage is not worth paying attention to.
The narrator is not portrayed by an actor, but a giant head in the corner of the stage in front of a screen where moving versions of the album's pictures/video game cutscenes take place, and because of this, every other character is played by one person wandering around an empty stage except for the orchestra either side of them, yelling their lines to the audience.
There's a huge Tripod over the stage too, but it doesn't do anything but shoot lights at the audience whenever there's a heat ray on the screen behind it.
It's really really stupid, i suggest not spending the money, just find the album version.
