The Twilight Zone: Kick the Can (1962)
Let's kick some cans, folks
"All kids play those games and the minute they stop, they begin to grow old
It's almost as though playing kick-the-can keeps them young"
"Maybe there are people who stay young
Maybe they know a secret they keep from the rest of us
Maybe the fountain of youth isn't a fountain at all
Maybe it's a way of looking at things, a way of thinking"
Said Mr. Charles Whitley.
We always happen to accidentally drop by that YouTuber or podcaster or even an acquaintance that tell us to go back to the hobbies we used to practice as kids for various purposes, one of them is that it helps with the process of healing and taking care of our inner child, other one is to stay creative regardless the world of distractions we're living in due to social Media that Chain us to what's only trendy and keep us limited to what we're exposed to, hindering us from innovation. And the paradox is that we always watch kids these days trying to act like adults!!
At some point in the episode people start panicking when Charles Whitley starts acting playfully around the water as if he's lost his total sanity. I wonder why we hide the most alive version of us in the sake of maturity? Who said that adulting code is to be serious all the time?
Being young is the only age we feel full of life, the minute we start carrying more responsibility it gets darker, that's whywe try to stick to any memory of the youth to keep us motivated not to give up our miserable life. I'm not saying we should pretend as if time should stop at youth phase, yet to get the most advantage of the youth to help us cope with adulting problems.
The Twilight Zone: Five Characters in Search of an Exit (1961)
Aside from the plot twist, here are some serious thoughts on the "five characters in search for an exit"
A major, a ballet dancer, a hobo, a bagpiper and a clown are locked in a barrel where they don't know neither how they got there, who they are nor even what's going to happen to them?
Each of them starts putting assumptions about all the questions running in their heads, sadly all these efforts seeking the truth are in vain, because as a matter of fact, no one got the answer!
As if they question themselves in the sake of not losing their minds, or is the process of asking itself gonna make them lunatic? Save your energy because even that question is without an answer.
We may add to those five characters other several, a pilot, an accountant, a president, a beggar, a teacher...etc
And instead of the cylinder it's going to be a big land full of buildings, cities, countries and continents surrounded by huge amount of water.
Labels and places don't really matter as long as they're human beings with awakened minds, they're all going to question, they're all going to rebel, they may go nuts and yet they will not find the answer.
Sometimes They keep themselves busy with things they call "achievements" so they forget their misery and stay distracted from destroying the last sane cells in their brains, and those achievements that bring them the so-called "success" are chronic sedatives for the big question of all the time: what's the purpose?
"We're in hell" said the major.
It occurred to me at one of my sleepless nights that this might be hell. We think hell or heaven are the aftermath of living but we might have lived before and here we are receiving our punishment, which is relatable to the "nice place to visit" episode. We are happy, the second after we get bored and then we start thinking, and we don't really have any control over all of these emotions.
I don't need to mention that this review is not to give you an answer either, do I?
One of the episodes that didn't just keep me positioned in my place after it was over but even during watching it as my thoughts were in competition.
Highly recommend.
The Twilight Zone: Long Distance Call (1961)
Disturbing, frightening and spooky
Extraordinary episode with some serious goosebumps.
At first, it might seem sentimental and sad, until the boy's first attempt of suicide hits you with no warning. Couldn't agree with the mother when she said their close relationship wasn't the right thing to do, but later on I quite agree that it shouldn't have gone that far.
Whenever I suggest "The twilight zone" for any of my acquaintances I always describe it as a warmly horrified TV Show, but this one here isn't warm at all, this is pure horror. Starting from the acting that was unique compared to other episodes, aside to the music and the plot. All these factors worked their way on to create this specific vibe that no one can never forget once they watch "long distance call".
