Dave (1993)
Something we all need to see in this election year
In what is shaping up to be a long, long, next three months and a few days, everyone should watch (or rewatch!) this movie to remember, if we can, what we hope our President can be. This is a movie about a temp-agency owner who is recruited to be the President of the United States. Yet, in his final speech, fake-President Dave hits the nail on the head: that he was hired by (then) 250 million people to make their lives a little bit better. And it's a "temp job", at that. No truer words have ever been spoken, and I've always thought it was ironic that the man who brought us Ghostbusters was responsible for some of the best political observations ever.
Jesse Stone: Lost in Paradise (2015)
Well worth watching!
I wasn't sure Hallmark could pull off a non-censored Jesse Stone (the ones repeated from CBS had the occasional editing), but they did. The story was unhurried, but that is to be expected of all the Jesse Stone tales. Tom Selleck and the Brandmans have continued the themes started years ago by Robert Parker. Tom Selleck is still at his best, and the supporting characters are great. And Steve (Ned the Dog) was wonderful. I'm really glad to have Jesse Stone back. We folks who don't fit the commercial demographic (we're the ones that like Longmire, too) still like quality television. But I also hope the producers get hold of a couple of the other Jesse Stone books, as they would make great episodes.
Argo (2012)
How many people reviewing this movie were actually around during this time?
I find the caustic reviews of this movie perplexing, and wonder how many of the reviewers remember the 1979-1981 time frame well enough to recognize that, despite some dramatic liberties that were taken, this movie is a fairly good dramatization of a very difficult period in international relations. What makes Argo good is its depiction of the time (including styles of dress and hairstyles that will hopefully never come back), the confusion, and what a mess the whole relationship between the United States and Iran was. What is also great is some of the dialogue, which is flat-out hysterical. I never saw "Breaking Bad," but Bryan Cranston had to have had fun with his lines in this movie.
South Pacific (1958)
It's Hawaii
As I write this I am watching the movie on TCM, and listening to the rain in Kauai, which is where it was shot. The color changes are weird, but the music is wonderful and there is no more beautiful place than Kauai. Why else would films as diverse as Jurassic Park and Islands in the Stream be shot here? This movie should be viewed for that alone!
The Outsider (2002)
All Women Should See this
Anyone who likes Louis L'Amour books-made-into-movies will love The Outsider. It's a little schlocky, but the scenery is beautiful, the story is decent, and Tim Daly makes a terrific grungy bad-but-good guy. My 81-year-old mother loved it, my 59-year-old friend loved it, and I was able to stay awake at 4 in the morning to see how it ended. It's sort of like Witness with a less frustrating ending.
