Dark Matter (2024)
First time I watched an Apple release soon after it became available and yep I thought the first two aired episodes were well worth a gander
I am gonna make a point of saying like some other reviewers that I too tend to get a bit miffed with Apple as they do opt to drip feed episodes on a weekly basis rather than release the whole set at once to enjoy binging out to - reminds me of those bad ole days way back when JR Ewing brought Dallas to terrestrial tv- geez it's almost 2025 that mentality Apple still forces its subscribers to abide by leaves me a tad yep u guessed bewildered and yep .. I digress... Rant over ...so I admit I didn't see the preview and caught the remote by accident heading to watch Fallout on prime - and this show [thought it was a going to be a film - wasn't paying attention- dark matter was showing on the main home page with a clip of Joel Egerton so thought I'd have a gander at what it was before heading to watch the other show and being someone who liked these sci-fi genre type films - yep I now realise it's weekly episodes - my gripe resurrected - I hit play and for first time since Apple TV streaming took off I found myself perched on sofa hooked but left reeling I could only watch the first two episodes...grrr would it really affect subscriptions if Apple began serving up the full series of shows to its subscribers - dark ages manner or what.
I guess if you have read the book or seen the likes of constellation you are probably already familiar with the storyline and depending on how much you enjoy this play on alternate reality concepts will sort of feed into whether you will find it a captivating experience. For me it has ticked the boxes I liked the cast they're pretty convincing in their roles and though it doesn't speed along - such as the likes of the inception film, this is a show that seems to offer up do far a pretty decent storyline and both episodes did chug along at a reasonable pace.
Unfortunately for me, I'm not going to watch anymore until all the episodes have been aired as I ain't a subscriber who has time the desire to add a weekly fix of that soap opera style format to my calendar but I admit as an Apple one subscriber i imagine I will upon completion of studies probably return to viewing the remainder of the episodes later in the year unless I get even more peeved and switch to another secondary streaming service to complement my prime subscription as I tend to prefer to set aside time and opt - when we get a choice... - oh I am a griping again ...what's that bug up my backside something beginning with A? - to have a binge out to unwind but I will say, gripe about Apple as a service aside, if you enjoy alternate reality storylines I'd say go ahead and make a point of watching the show I am more than likely gonna join ya and binge out to the rest of them later in the year [when I'm given the some, albeit, belated choice to do that Apple - as I think it has the offerings of a captivating show and is a little more intriguing to constellation and yes I admit I also found that storyline intriguing too - though admittedly it did run slow at times so here's hoping this show further along doesn't follow suit and keeps going at a steady pace.
Expend4bles (2023)
Expendables 4th instalment
I've only just gotten around to watching expendables movies this year. Earlier this year I enjoyed 1 and 2 and today - geez didn't realise the time gap between movies 3 and 4 - it was a case of time gor some much needed escapism that led to Saturday evening binge watching watching expendables 3 and then settling down to watching expendables 4 and personally it was an enjoyable evening.
I was surprised to see the film only has a mid range grading on IMDb and have just glanced over some of the reviews so am chipping in my 2 penneth to say I thought it scores a decent 8 from me. It wasn't as good as the third instalment though I do think the stunts, the martial arts moves, the occasional funny one liners alongside the introduction of some new characters who joined the team were pretty good viewing
I did miss not seeing some of the actors not reprise the roles they played as main characters from expendables 3 but I guess after pandemic their workloads have no doubt been hectic with other projects that I've enjoyed seeing them in so I think bringing in newer characters this time helped till the gap and as a result we got chance to see more martial arts performance matched with stunts and explosive scenes that kept me enthralled.
As other reviewers have noted people are better off just watching the film and making up their own minds. If you enjoy action films then it's probably going to be a film you will enjoy. For me it's a thumbs up and feeling the scoring seemed low I felt it worth taking time to add to the higher score and say why it seemed a tad unjust.
Forward (2019)
Forward
Ok so yes, as one of the other reviewers remarked about loving sci-fi, I hold up my hand and admit to being someone who indeed enjoys escapism through encapsulated binge moments of sci-fi screenings haha and tbh quickly settled down to a 75 min period of following along to the workings of a creators show and tell, which I might add, ticked the boxes enough to keep me somewhat enthralled with the storyline.
I don't tend to be someone who tries to determine the plot, I glance over the films outline and take a peek at the trailer when available and then walk in with a blank canvas mentality - yup, the nice but dim type of guy that sometimes people prefer to avoid-their loss n my good fortune ...for me it's the benefit of not having to waste time and effort on social niceties - for them i think each to their own haha.
Maybe, I didn't pay enough attention earlier into the film to determine whether the machine brought forward a person in time from the past - that's the way my mind read the plot - , I sensed it was that way but maybe I read the story wrong and they were drawn back from the future to the past ..though that wouldn't necessarily sit right with the title of the film, then again, blank canvas n all, it could well be do. Anyhoo reason I mention this is because as the film drew nearer to the end I was wondering...
...If the version of his girlfriend recalls returning in the boyfriend's experiments, why doesn't the girlfriend in the present setting make a comment wherein she recalls the times they spent together when she appeared in those experiments?
I thought the actor Chuck? Whose girlfriend he retrieved, by way of the machine experiments, conveyed a very convincing and natural portrayal of his character. It was as though I listening to one of my friends talking as I watched the film - yes I tend to transcend into the film and become a background character who has a non speaking role to play like when you are a a footy match haha
Had I not glanced over their profile I would not have known he hadn't done much main stream acting prior to this role so it'll be good seeing him develop as he transitions more into front of the camera roles if he chooses to pursue more roles as an actor
I particularly liked the light effects touch of the girlfriend evaporations after the two experiments.
I did think the remarks from reviewer who slated the film for how the props and set had been displayed were a wee bit harsh.
I read the remark as though they had stopped taking an interest in the story, focused on the films misgivings that, like another reviewer remarked 'but for the lack of budget has, storyline wise, the makings for reworking potentialities, and missed out on becoming embroiled in character portrayals.
Nothing much more to add other than to say if peeps who are drawn to sci-fi genre like storylines with time travel themed features and don't expect big budget splurges, then it's a worthy watch.
I propose perhaps a willingness to keep an open mind, become fully engaged in the plot n maybe you will also enjoy.
Oh! Juinnim (2021)
Oh my ladylord
I added this to the watch list for when I would take a couple of days off from study and seek some escapism by way of a binge watch session. After watching the show, I had a gander at some of the reviews and agree the lower ratings seem a bit harsh.
Personally, I thought this was a thoroughly enjoyable show any one can easily become immersed in. I thought the cast all performed well and the actors imo were very convincing at conveying their characters.
The last episode kept me gripped so I thought it was well written, oh and yes, without spoilers, throughout the show, each episode brought to life the overall storyline in which there were some intrigue, alongside jovial moments amidst moving moments too - ok I admit my eyes welled a few times - when I escape through shows like this I tend to become immersed in the story and the characters the actors are portraying so my emphatic side is easily triggered - guessing some people may not be as easily moved as I was as we are all different but I'm sure that anyone would find the storylines relatable.
I like the suggested season 2 plot a reviewer posted and think that would be good makings for a follow up - bit like bringing Bobby back in Dallas pickings/offerings of an alternate approach to the main theme and re- jigging timelines of the storytelling that proffered up imo potentially another season that would have me enthralled.
Nadie nos mira (2017)
Nobody's watching
I stumbled upon this film yesterday when I needed a break from studies and didn't know what I wanted to watch. I had already enjoyed a sci-fi movie and so had a flick through titles that the streaming service was offering up which took me away from my usual choice of genre- more of late, since the Covid pandemic which introduced me to a few South Korean movies/shows, my viewing seems to broadened and led me into an adventure of watching offerings up that the entertainment industry provides from other countries which, in turn, led me to settling down and becoming enthralled in this, my first time watching an Argentinian movie.
I have given a 9 rating as I found the storyline encapsulating. I became immersed in the portrayal of the character. I prefer to watch movies in their native language and read the subtitles or if this goes to fast focus on the actors in the scene and try to get a gist of what is happening. I only had to play back a couple of times to scenes where I was not sure and other times was able to follow along fine with the aid of subtitles the rest of the time.
Since watching the movie, i had a gander at the reviews purveyed from both sides of the spectrum and found they pretty much convey a good summing up of what to expect if you wanted to read up on perspectives other people proffer - always find it interesting to read someone else's perspective irrespective of whether I agree/disagree ...just to get an idea of their take on the production for enlightenment and am often left wondering if their perspective is what the creators may also have sought to accomplish.
I haven't anything to add to reviews already submitted and not really wanting to add spoilers because I'd rather someone watch the production and form their own perspective. For me the film was enjoyable and interesting, I am not sure how similar these life experiences portrayed by the actors performing their roles in that industry are, though I get an inkling that the film was not too far off the beaten track as some other reviewers aptly point out, when you imagine stepping into the shoes of the characters, you could envisage people being in similar circumstances irrespective of the type of career might seek to aspire to excel in.
It was, for me personally, captivating, I felt moments of emotion that brought out empathy, laughter, frustration for the main characters, understanding from the view of the other characters during their interactions all of which left me, intrigued, happy, sad though thankfully not weepy and throughout the entire movie fully engaged in the storyline. As an ordinary person who enjoys moments of escapism by way of entertainment industry offerings, it is for these reasons, aligned with the fact this being a first time viewing of an Argentinian themed production, I chose to rate the film a deserving 9 for all the work done by everyone involved in bringing this film to screen.
Yijae, Got Jookseummida (2023)
soooooo good imo it was worth praising on IMDb
Am 3 years into viewing South Korean entertainment and once again thanks to exceptional performances aligned with a unique style transcending to the screen, helped by those who also work behind the scenes, us ordinary folk get to immerse ourselves in some quality production content.
From the get go the show had me gripped I ended up taking a breather from studying and spent the next 8 hours binge watching.
Some of the scenes were like film level quality and the storylines for every episode kept me enthralled.
I started out watching SK productions by accident when a sci-fi genre show was recommended that thankfully resulted in me getting to broaden genre viewing and subsequently led me to watch this show today ....soooooo good imo it was worth praising on IMDb.
Renfield (2023)
Renfield is an enjoyably funny, entertainingly immersive film to watch
By happenstance, arriving on the streaming service was for me some good fortune to see and watch in the comfort of home providing the chance to once again be immersed in the world of entertainment and this time observe the conundrums a master and servant might endure were they to arise in modern day settings - all thanks to the top quality workmanship these two actors and, their fellow supporting cast, present on screen to us ordinary folk that enables such a film to come to life before a viewers very eyes.
These kind of well written and funnily presented illustrations further supported by an array of equally well crafted characters performed by gifted actors are, for me, something I can't help expressing, I do appreciate setting aside some time to watch. This is especially so when needing and seeking some temporary comfort oft sought through, and by way of, convincingly encapsulated engaging entertainment industry escapism which is why I feel compelled to convey my gratitude to all involved in its making and production from this viewer.
