Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities: The Murmuring (2022)
Saint of a man deals with coo coo beeotch wife after a family tragedy.
The story is not bad, and occasionally scary, but the husband dealing with the emotional damage brought on by her wife. Honestly I would have left her. She is seeing strange going on's but refuses to tell her husband what she is seeing, but instead lashes out at her husband non stop. Bringing up conversations that happened earlier in the story, using them as ammo against her husband even though they don't apply to what is currently going on. The husband deserved better, I would have divorced her. The wife is overly concerned for her personal feelings then rejects her husband when he tries to express his feelings. Such is modern film making.... sigh.
Prey (2022)
Was it woke? A little bit...
The main protagonist Naru does make mistakes, learns from them and learns from observing the Predator behavior. Only a couple times I had to roll my eyes during the film, but the pure savagery of the Predator made up for one or two gripes I had with the film. Definitely a step in the right direction for the series.
From (2022)
Boring
A show where everyone has a piece of the puzzle to escape, but everyone hates each other, won't share information, and are just not likeable, so noone can escape this nightmare. There was not one likeable person in this show except maybe the Sheriff. Nothing really gets reveled in the entire season, and there are other shows that attempt the same thing as From but do it better.
From: All Good Things... (2022)
Missed opportunity
Had to give this episode a 2/10 due too the fact this could have been amazing if just a little thought went into it. Maybe it was budgeting constraints, but we could have gotten a bloodbath at colony house, really demonstrating how dangerous these creatures are, but of course most of the action is off screen and we have to IMAGINE what is happening..... FAIL!
The Adam Project (2022)
A decent family drama with some sci-fi elements to push the story
The core of this movie is a family drama where a 13 year old copes with the death of his father. The movie solves the question we all ask ourselves, what would we tell our loved ones if we had one more chance to see them. The time travel and action scenes just push the story so we get the answer to those questions. The action is bland, and sometimes predictable, but when the focus is the family is when the movie shines. The scene with Jennifer Gardner and Ryan Reynolds talking in a bar is particularly memorable.
Demonic (2021)
A swing and a miss....
I like Neil's films and unique takes on existing genres. However this movie was much more bland then the trailers make you believe. Literally every cool idea and scene was shown in the trailer. Wanna see how black-op military priests sent by the vatican combat demons...... yeah that never happens. Could have been cool, but nah, no budget for that! Of the 3 V. R. scenes there was only one interesting moment when they kinda reveal the demon. This movie had lots of promise but went nowhere with it, was not scary enough to be called horror, and inspite of its one or two unique ideas, it did not push them far enough.
Come True (2020)
Could have been a great movie...
This movie is totally let down by a cop out ending in the name of trying to be bold.... Let me save you some money. It's all a dreeeeeeeeeam! Every thing you see on screen didn't happen, it's all because the main protagonist is in a coma/dreaming. Nothing matters... there's no consequence, no danger. If they just let the movie be, and ended it the way things were seeming to go, the movie would have been at least average 5.0-7.0. But that ending just sucked. Plus theres a weird romance with a scientist that is clearly breaking some moral guidelines that would ruin his career if ever discovered.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Good visuals but horrible characters does not a good movie make.
I can suspend my disbelief in dragons, magic, ninja trained 6 month olds. But as many times raya got screwed over by the antagonist, I can't believe anyone could ever trust someone like that. Like an abuse victim that keeps returning too the abuser, honestly the antagonist like many other characters in this movie we unlikeable or just straight evil.
The Vast of Night (2019)
A movie where nothing happens.
What more do you need to know. Nothing really happens in the movie. Even with a shoe string budget I expected more. This was just bad. No idea why ANYBODY is giving this a higher score.
Booksmart (2019)
If your a republican you will not like this movie, if you are a democrat you will
In the first five minutes you will understand what I am talking about, Repubs stay away from this movie.
Mandy (2018)
Feel the rage.... of Nicholas Cage.
This movie is not for everyone. Gory, artsy, simplistic plot. But for who this movie is for it's pretty damn good. Dialogue is minimalistic using visuals to help push the narrative and create feelings of what the characters are going thru. P.S. I think all the tiger visuals represent Nic Cage himself. The paintings, T-Shirt, Tiger in the cage. Also... is it weird that after seeing those cheddar goblins I am hungry for some mac n cheese now?
The Predator (2018)
Worst in the Predator series thus far...
Oh man where to go on this one... So much was wrong with this movie, I will break it down without giving much away for spoilers.... 1. Predator Iron Man suit 2. Predator dogs, 3. Predator dogs disobey their predator masters and help save the humans (because pred-dogs or so cute?) 4. Everybody in this movie knows exactly how to use pred- technology exactly when it's needed most. 5. Non stealthy preds that are just walking bullet sponges. 6. Too many jokes, like every other line, I literally only laughed once maybe twice. 7. Human bad guy betrays other humans for no reason except because he's the bad guy? Movie was all over the place and seemed to lack focus, one min they fighting in the jungle, next in the city, next in a secret base, next back in the woods, then back in the suburbs.
Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
Not as good as the first... but still good.
As the title says, Ant-man was a tad better but I still found this as a highly enjoyable side story. It does not have the epicness save the world plot as we have come to expect from most Marvel films but has heart. My one major complaint is that they did not utilize the Ghost as much as they should have in this movie. Honestly Ghost needs her own film, as I was expecting some epic battle sequences like we see in Matrix Revolutions with the twin ghost scenes. I gave the original Ant Man a 9/10 this one is 8/10 borderline 7/10. One redeeming quality of the film is that the end credits show why Ant Man was not in Infinity Wars :)
Justice League (2017)
Just an average film...
Just got back from the theaters...... JL was meh. It was OK but not good or bad. JL was like a poor mans avengers. The way they are trying to compete with MARVEL is all wrong. First off they introduce Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman with out their own stand alone movies so in JL it was like.... here is 5 mins of backstory to introduce each character... here you go and action! Secondly there is no difference (except less quality) that separates this from the Marvel equivalent. They need to take their time and not rush these films just to compete with Marvel. This movie felt very rushed. Marvel/Disney has been setting this thing up for 10+ years....
The Dark Tower (2017)
Meh.... worth a rent, but not full price.
I knew nothing about this movie except what I have read the past week. A lot of the critics were right about this movie. It's an interesting mash up of different genres but felt way too rushed, especially at the end. This movie needed to be 3 hours long it feels like to flesh out certain ideas or better yet, given the Lord of the Rings treatment and divided into 3 films. Isn't this supposed to be based off 8 books? What idiot thinks they could convert this into a quality film in 88 mins?
