Tin & Tina (2023)
I wanted to like this
Spoiler rant first because this is ridiculous:
These kids kill a dog. The family dog. They KILL it. With a KNIFE. And at the end the woman still decides yes, I can live with these psychotic children. ???? I understand they are just misguided children, but killing a creature so big, (like not just a bug or a lizard that we could close our eyes to), is miles from normal, its not something you just not mention again and move on from?? Not to mention they almost killed her baby, so ???
Would I watch this again? No.
Would I recommend it? For one viewing I guess, the production is decent, that's the sad thing.
Will you miss anything by skipping this movie? Nope.
Appendage (2023)
People struggling mentally will appreciate this movie
I suffer with depression and anxiety and self esteem issues and etc etc, so the lesson of accepting how you feel and just treating yourself kindly is one you learn to be able to cope with these issues, and this movie does a great job of giving us a visual representation of this idea with a fun horror flare.
It has funny moments, gross moments and many relatable moments. It's not particularly scary, it's more of a bizarre fever dream kind of experience.
Either way:
Would I watch this again? Yes.
Would I recommend it? Yes, to those who aren't too serious or can't suspend belief.
Will you miss anything by skipping this movie? I'll conservatively say yes, it has a fun twist and could help people who have yet to learn how to handle mental and emotional troubles.
Characters? They were all fine I thought, no one too annoying or anything. My only huge peeve was the main character taking what felt like forever to go to the doctor about the nasty thing developing on her side XD
Was it interesting? Yes, I thought it was. Nothing wild, but enough to enjoy.
Thought provoking? Yes, definitely a window to our modern stresses and how we neglect those injuries.
I liked it.
The Black Demon (2023)
It's not good. It tries to trick you, but it fails.
Would I watch this again? NO.
Would I recommend it? NO x2.
Will you miss anything by skipping this movie? Again, HELL NO.
The main male actor/character was bad. There's no sugar coating it, either he can't act or he was acting like he couldn't act, and the same could be said for all the other characters with the exception of the wife. She was legitimately a good actress and did a good job, but she was on a sinking ship.
It's not a shark flick, it's a ' spooky shark has been sent by the gods to punish us for killing the planet' flick, and doesn't that just sound dumb? Yes because it was, it played out as dumb as it sounds.
I still to this day do not understand how this film made it to cinemas and I feel terrible for the poor folk who didn't search up the reviews before buying a ticket. It truly was nonsense.
Run Rabbit Run (2023)
Predictable, neither good or horrible
Would I watch this again? No.
Would I recommend it? Not really.
Will you miss anything by skipping this movie? Again, not really.
Horror? Technically, but it's not scary. The events that come to light were technically horrific, but the movie doesn't actually scare you.
Characters? Main actress does a good job of portraying that her character is off from the start. A troubled character for sure. Good acting from her. The daughter got annoying at times, but nothing too bad.
Was it interesting? Enough to keep watching to see if you figured out the end correctly. It's the classic 'secret from the past come back to haunt you literally'.
Thought provoking? It did make me try to imagine myself in the main character's shoes and if I'd have been capable of what happened with her.
The ending? Open ended like most trash movies today, but it leans strongly enough in a direction which was better than most movies offer.
Birth/Rebirth (2023)
The glowing reviews are either paid or purposefully bloating.
Would I watch this again? No.
Would I recommend it? No.
Will you miss anything by skipping this movie? Still no.
Horror? No. It's a drama about medical and parental morality.
Characters? Watching Rose felt like watching Eugene from The Walking Dead (In all fairness she did have *some* charming moments but overall the character just fell flat). Celie was fine, she kept the scenes from being unbearable. The kid was boring but she was a reanimated corpse, so. (Although not focusing more intimately on the impact on the daughter was a terribly missed opportunity imo)
Was it interesting? The idea is, but the movie itself isn't.
Thought provoking? Yes, as in you'll sit and imagine more exciting ways this movie could've been made.
TO BE CLEAR, I am not giving it a low rating because the kid didn't turn into a zombie or get possessed or something, I am giving it a low rating because the movie was boring and the scenes felt like being dragged through gravel. There was not enough action or intrigue for the topic of literally bringing (and keeping) the dead back to life via questionable means. How do you manage to make that boring? This movie does with characters you barely care about, dreary grey scenes and the bear minimum of possible ideas used. It lightly coats a mold that could be SO much deeper. Sure, a movie doesn't need jump scares to be interesting, but even as a drama it needed more actual drama??
It's barely a thriller or a psychological horror, there were no 'special effects', no 'new life to Frankenstein', and no 'lingering impact', no wow factor, and calling it creepy? Please, people. None of this is in this film unless you have seen no other movies/stories in your life and you've just come out of the womb.
We already know many mothers will kill for their kids; some would feel bad, some wouldn't, it's not revolutionary. We already know many people in science would push the ethical boundary for the greater good, whether struggling with those choices or not. We know this, and although the summary isn't misleading and this movie does portray the characters experiencing these subjects, but it was incredibly lackluster and contains the most basic of ideas one could come up with for such a juicy topic.
The glowing reviews are misleading. It's a slow medical drama between two uninteresting characters about keeping a kid alive at a moral cost. If this was the intention, then it passed. However, it doesn't mean it was enjoyable. It missed out on countless opportunities.
Who will enjoy this movie? People who haven't seen many movies or read many books, people who don't ask questions, people who are easily impressed, people who prefer slow movies, people who have a personal connection to the creators.
No hate on the actors obviously.
