A History of Violence (2005)
Interesting to say the least
Spoilers:
Wow, two movies this year and I have been incredibly impressed with both (other being Batman)
What a thought provoking flick this was. And how refreshing for a movie to end when its supposed to instead of being dragged out 2 hours just for the sake of making a 2 hour film. It is great when a film ends when the viewer actually thinks it should. How many times do we sit viewing a movie and it keeps fading out to another useless scene. Not this one. How did it end in your theatre? Mine, the scene went black and house lights came up immediately....wow! What a great technique. Then it faded for us to watch the credits.
Few comments,
No, the two criminals at the beginning were not sent by Ritchie. In my mind they were sent to show that if you have a violent background no matter how hard you try to escape it violence will seek YOU out. Like honestly, what are the chances of those two fellows ending up in that small town. Of course they also started the chain of events that lead to him being found again by his old acquaintances but more so I believe to show he couldn't escape.
Even the final scene you wonder, did he escape it? His son and daughter make a gesture of forgiveness at the kitchen table but not his wife. (The sex scene was definitely not a sign of forgiveness)
Inbetween are typical Croneberg gross out scenes and some brutal violence mixed in with some surprising laughs. He used both very successfully as he had my packed theatre laughing, moaning in disgust and even some nervous laughter during the sex scene.
Finally something a little different to watch instead of the same old formula crap, remakes, etc that keeps getting pumped out nowadays.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)
Terrible
Had great potential but was just a disaster. How could anyone like this movie? I heard Sean hated it, fights everyday on set, I understand he fought nonstop with the director. It was so brutally edited. Reading some of the other comments they mention that main characters were totally deleted! And Sawyer, who the heck is he, why was he a member of the league??? I'm going to hunt down the books.
In the Cut (2003)
I don't get it
Why do we have to sit through two hours of a movie to find out that the killer is some character we know nothing about? Not fair. At least fill us in on what their about, their history, the "whys" I really thought about this movie afterwards. Characters were very bizarre, strange, dirty in a way. Bacon seemed to be in it so the makers could say we had Bacon in it. Slow, slow movie. Didn't enjoy it.
House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
Weird, Bizarre, Over-the-Top...I loved it
Re: comments on the acting.
Don't you guys get it??? It was played how it was supposed to be played. (Campy/overthetop) None of the acting in this movie was "bad". In fact I would say it was all played to perfection. I really don't understand you people. What kind of acting do you think was required for this movie? Its the schtick, get it!
3000 Miles to Graceland (2001)
Unbelievable
One thing to comment on. I can not believe that Thomas Haden Church's character felt respect for Costner's character at the end. "I'm glad he didn't give up, I wouldn't have" This guy just killed who knows how many law enforcement officers through the movie and this character makes a comment like that?! I really don't get it.
Dèmoni (1985)
whatever
I was a big fan of this movie when I was a teenager. Just re-watched it. Not really sure what I saw in it. I think the Bava's (ready....sorry) are seriously over-rated film makers. Yes, I've seen more of their movies than this. It's been done before people and much much better. I believe its just the novelty of Italian horror. Off to watch Demons 2 for old times sake.
Dead Calm (1989)
Hmmmmmmmm
Saw this in the video store. I haven't seen it in like 10 years. I was always a fan of this film and thought I would give it another viewing. I sure wasn't as impressed the second time around.
I read most of the reviews and agree. Possible spoilers follow.
Why oh why would she not kill this dude when she had the chance(s). Movie would end I guess. Also I find it so weird that she is so calm and mellow after her husband rescues her. She is swimming and getting a nice shampoo and snacking on the boat. This is after they both just fought for their lives with a psycho and she was raped!!
There was definitely some great cinemaphotography in in this film. Did I spell that right? Sure doesn't look like it.
And the ending...how cheesy. Why do film makers think we like this kind of ending. Man, we don't!!
I rented this on vhs. I am very interested in the other ending a reviewer mentioned. Is this ending on the dvd? Anyone with info on this please feel free to shoot me an e-mail. fuzaborsky@aol.com
Papertrail (1998)
Bad Bad Bad
Horrible acting, horrible writing, ridiculous story. I like Penn and Madsen and thought this may be good. Boy was I wrong. Like the earlier reviewer asked. Why was Madsen in this movie?? He did drift in and out and added absolutely nothing to the story and he did in fact disappear before the conclusion. Weird. I did get a laugh from how bad some of the writing was. Just listening to some of the lines being read was hilarious.
The Ring (2002)
Wait for video
Not bad. A tad bit slow. Would have enjoyed seeing more scenes showing images off the tape as I found these parts the most creepiest. Fun part to watch for: When the rock is thrown down the well is makes a thud not a splash.
Session 9 (2001)
Excellent
One of the creepiest films I've come across in a long time. Just to think that one of the reviewers live close to the hospital!! I can just imagine how scared she was growing up with it.
I think not all movies always need a plot. This movies plot is extremely simple. Do the asbestos abatement in 1 week. The plot in this movie is thrown out to us in the first few minutes then proceeds to meander towards it's terrifying ending. An extremely slow moving film but very effective in creating tension and edge of your seat fright. How bout the scene with Jeff in the basement as the light are going out or the untold ending that we all can easily guess. Man!! Freaky!
The characters were built up enough as they needed to be. Why do we always need to know the history and background of characters? These were just a bunch of workers (everyday joes) who were just showing up for their daily work to earn their daily pay, just like you and me. I don't think there is much to know about them and I like it that way. They aren't complex/mysterious people, they are just simple folk thrown into a f'ed up situation.
The acting was more than adequate I thought. It was nice to see David again! and Peter Mullan acting was just superb.
I give this 8 out of 10
ps. I never felt led to believe coins are evil.
