Ginny & Georgia (2021)
Great Show
I was born in the 80's, out of high school before everyone had a smartphone. With that said, I enjoyed this. Most high school shows I watch have SUPER unbelievable plots and not really relatable. There were many episodes that I could see my younger self as Ginny or knew someone who was her or a friend of hers. I never had group chats, but my high school was definitely clique-y. The show has that small-town charm feel where everyone knows everyone, and knows their business, during the day, people pop over to say hi. There's a few points that are a bit of a stretch, but it's a show, take it with a grain of salt.
I've seen others in the reviews saying the teenagers had attitude, were bratty, etc. Yeah, they were. It's called kids being kids. I'm sure these people were like that. Unlike other shows, they're not solving the town's crimes or driving between cities during the night on a school night. The show is mostly set either in someone's home or in the school, and kids are actually wearing backpacks. You get to see teachers teaching, kids facing real-world problems (underage drinking, self-harm, talk of suicide, racial oppression, relationship problems with both their friends and their family).
There's just enough to keep you wondering what's behind the next door and wanting more. It took me three days to watch 10 episodes because I just HAD to know.
I'm reminded a small bit of the Degrassi series (which is interesting, considering one of the actors is a former).
It wasn't perfect, which is why I didn't give it a 10, but it's pretty good, at least to me. I hope there's a Season 2.
Good Morning, Vietnam (1987)
A wonderful movie, better than I expected.
My family had this DVD for years and I'd never thought to take a look at it until my English teacher mentioned it a few weeks back. I'd heard the famous 'Go-oo-od Morning Vietnam!!' line numerous times and so I went home, put it in the DVD player and set myself up for 2 hours of what I thought would be 'meh' humour, in my way meaning, there would be some funny moments but I would just smile at them. Boy was I wrong! This is some awesome Robin Williams material. Many times I actually found myself laughing out loud. My English teacher said we'd be watching this in class one day and now I can't wait to see how the rest of my class reacts to it! I'm sure we'll all be in hysterics. Gotta love Robin!
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
Different...but still great. *SPOILERS*
I am an avid Harry Potter fan so naturally I went to see this pretty much the day it came out in Canada. I would say it's different, but still great. Alfonso Cuaron (Y Tu Mama Tambien) did an excellent job of directing Dan, Emma and Rupert (Harry, Hermione and Ron respectively). Unlike in the previous two movies, Cuaron filmed these three in normal 'Muggle' clothes at times and not just in their robes.
The young cast of Dan, Rupert and Emma were joined again by Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom) and Devon Murray (Seamus Finnigan), among others. The older cast once again included Dame Maggie Smith as Professor McGonagall, Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid and Alan Rickman as Professor Snape, again among many others. Newcomers this time 'round included Gary Oldman as the escaped criminal and accused murderer Sirius Black. Also new, replacing the late, great Richard Harris, is Michael Gambon, playing Headmaster of Hogwarts, Professor Albus Dumbledore. In my opinion, no one will be able to replace Mr. Harris and no one but Mr. Harris is Dumbledore. This may be just because he is new we will see.
The movie was very good if not missing out on a number of things. One thing that disappointed me was the fact they didn't do much on the Shrieking Shack. That is a major plot point.
Based on this and the fact that the next movie 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' (2005) has a new director, it will be interesting to see how the next movie goes, if it carries on the great legacy and the legendary boy wizard's greatness that J.K. Rowling's fantasy world is made up of.
Donnie Darko (2001)
A very good movie, would recommend
I personally loved this movie. I like almost any movie to do with disturbing events/people. Jake Gyllenhaal's performance as Donnie Darko was wonderful, I've never seen him as a disturbed schizo. Jena Malone is great as Donnie's girlfriend, Gretchen. These two work together wonderfully. Jake is also wonderful with his real life sister Maggie who plays his older sister and Daveigh Chase who plays his younger. Jake has the paranoid schizo down and when he needs to, he plays the psycho very well. His interactions with the fuzzy rabbit 'Frank' are also very well done. I would recommend this movie to anyone. I would also recommend it to anyone who wants to see Gyllenhaal as he is very handsome as the leading man. Rating: 10/10.
Cruel Intentions (1999)
Wonderful Movie!
I just finished watching Cruel Intentions and I am truly BLOWN AWAY. In a way I was expecting another teen movie but this...this deserves mega props.
The cast was full of big time actors and actresses (Ryan Phillippe, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Selma Blair, Reese Witherspoon, Joshua Jackson, newcomer Sean Patrick Thomas [made famous starring next to Julia Stiles in Save The Last Dance] and at the very beginning playing Sebastian's therapist's daughter, none other than Tara Reid (Vicky from the American Pie movies).
This movie is incredible. I never thought I'd come across a teen movie quite like this. It didn't conform to the typical high school stereotypes...well mostly not except for with Greg the jock.
I love Ryan Phillippe in this movie! I've really never seen him smile but when he does, he looks so sexy!! I especially love the part where Annette (Reese Witherspoon) and Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe) are in Sebastian's '56 Jag Roadster and Annette is making all these silly faces and making Sebastian laugh.
I'd definitely recommend this movie. May not be appropriate for younger children, though.
I give this movie 5 out of 5 stars.
Virtual Nightmare (2000)
Quite Interesting
***SPOILERS***
I saw Virtual Nightmare last night on Space for the first time. I personally thought it was a good movie, not excellent, but not bad. There were no 'big-name' actors (at least to my generation) and so I was able to get into the people's characters. Virtual Nightmare is one of the best movies to go along with our technologically centered world (another that comes to mind is The Matrix) since we may be paranoid at times to whether or not our minds are being controlled by some government conspiracy. The town in which Dale and Natalie lived in was too...perfect. Something had to be going on. It was interesting when Dale looked at things and saw something like Men's Wristwatch #000374 or Briefcase #000265. Then when he started seeing people dressed in prison-like clothes without the stripes or numbers and everyone dirty that was interesting. Also during the 4th of July celebrations he saw the people in the bands playing boxes labelled Bass Drums and wrapping paper tubes. On the whole very good.
Graveyard Shift (1990)
Not really that scary...
*********CONTAINS SPOILERS************
When I read the back of the box in the video store I thought I was in for a nice scare that night. Boy, was I wrong! It was more of a gore fest than a horror movie. The contraption in the basement when the main character threw the rat in, that was a tad sick. At the end when the monster thing was getting chopped up and its head wouldn't go through, that was sick. I saw Stephen King's Pet Sematary and Children of the Corn and those were scarier. I don't think it's worth your 2 bucks to rent.
Maybe It's Me (2001)
A great show, shame it's gone.
I loved this show! I watched it every Friday night on the WB without fail. It really surprised me when I went to watch it one night and it wasn't there. It so described how being a teenage girl is nowadays (maybe without such a quirky family or such a large family). Reagan Dale Neis was excellent as Molly Stage and the little 'fun facts' that popped up everynow and then (Pop-Up Video anyone?) were fun. I'd've LOVED to be in a family like that if I had the chance. I would have given this show (out of 5) 5 stars for comedy, 5 for acting and a 5 for the use of factuality.
Mr. Deeds (2002)
Quite Good
In my opinion (OPINION!!) I thought it was a great Sandler movie. I love Adam! I laughed thru out the entire movie. It showed him in a great perspective. Taking "Pam Dawson" to her supposed hometown, thats so sweet! I'm a fan of all his movies. Keep up the great work Adam Sandler!!
Your Big Break (1999)
Pretty Good
It's a pretty good show. I like tuning in on my Sunday nights and seeing who performs as who! Alfonso suits the role of host. I never knew the 1st host though. I was happy to see the 'childish' Carlton Banks actor was making a good comeback as host of Your Big Break! Some of the performers are very good but others downright SUCK! (sorry!)
Anne Frank: The Whole Story (2001)
An excellent movie!
I love Anne Frank. She's pretty much my biggest idol and I think that this movie showed her life the way she lived it down to the last detail. A standing ovation for the writer, director, etc and all the cast. A perfect way to show how the war in Germany REALLY happened and how her life was led in the concentration camps.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
One of the greatest movies ever made
Excellent stars and supporting actors make this a once-in-a-lifetime type movie. The script was so well written it made it seem as if everyone was actually inmates in Shawshank. Every time the movie comes on tv I watch it and at the end STILL cry of happiness. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman are outstanding together!
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
An excellent teen-age movie!
My god! Where to start! Matthew Broderick is EXCELLENT in this movie! His boyish good looks and charm have perfectly set him in the role for Ferris! Faking an illness to hang out with friend Cameron (Alan Ruck) and Sloane (Mia Sara) is geneous! Though I wouldn't recommend doing it! Sight-seeing and pretending and parent-dodging, oh my! The parade and Ferris singing 'Twist and Shout' is awesome! The close call with Ferris's dad in the taxi, edge-of-your-seat comedy! I'm younger than this movie is and I LOVE it! I'd love to Sloane and have Ferris as a boyfriend and do that. SO FUN!!
8 Simple Rules... for Dating My Teenage Daughter (2002)
Great reviews
I don't know who it is writing the negative reviews but whoever it is: Shut uup! 8 Simple Rules is pretty much everything my family is and I love that! I'm sick of those shows that have the bad thing happen then the 'violin music' coming on as the characters explain what happened that went wrong, then the "I'm sorry"s and the hugs. This is reFRESHING! I look forward to Tuesday nights so I can watch 8 Simple Rules. It's so nice to see that the family isn't always working as a team like they do in other shows (namely the late 80s early 90s show Full House). They have DISAGREEMENTS! They FIGHT! I bet if the show was taped in front of a live audience, they'd get glowing, true laughs! 8 Simple Rules ROCKS!
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
How I liked the movie
WARNING: This review may contain spoilers. If you have not seen the movie I strongly suggest you see it before you read this.
I found the movie quite excellent. I agree, there were parts from the book that were left out or changed, but other than that very good. I loved the part where Harry was hanging off his broomstick with only one hand. Don't ask me why, just 'cause. Also he looks so determined to get Neville's Remembrall back from Malfoy. You can see it in his face! I found the Voldemort scene very intense. I mean, how many 11-year-old kids would be able to stand up to someone like Voldemort/Professor Quirrel. And did you notice how when Quirrel comes into the Great Hall to tell Proffessor Dumbledore that there's a "Troll in the dungeon", that he doesn't stutter?!?! I found that quite weird and a bit foreshadowing!
